I actually prefer it with the raytracing off. I think it's like a lot of games that are using new effects they tend to overdo it to try and "showcase" it, but it can just end up looking awful. I remember when bloom was first introduced suddenly every game had eye-wateringly overdone bloom on every surface, and it looks like the same thing is happening at the moment to raytracing as it's the new cool thing to sell graphics cards.

I have a 4080 and 100% agree... It makes even marble look like a wet surface and the reflections often move unnaturally. I turned it off to play. I think until it becomes standard in the industry, artists will spend more time creating without it. Playing HL with it seemed like an afterthought to the creators.

@charlymop

There is subtle things that the raytracing is adding, a little bit of bounce and some ambient and in some cases the reflections looks ok. BUT it's mostly broken and quite useless, so that's good news for people who were scared of missing something. The RTX AO is really messing with some objects such as leaves and hanging towel and other stuff. Control was doing better 4 years ago...

Most traditional lighting, if done well, doesn't, but it takes the devs a lot longer to make it look that good without ray tracing. That's one of the selling points: Just create the surfaces with the correct reflection properties and place a real light and the rest is automatic.

Honestly it almost looks better with RT off. Many of the reflections are too reflective and sharp for the materials, and the softer ssr makes more sense in a lot of scenes, even if it doesn’t jump out at the player as much. Also the image seems to be noticably clearer without RT. Would have preferred heavier RT shadow implementation, or GI and AO, over reflections. Still nice to have as an option though and they did seem to prioritize current gen consoles and higher end hardware as the primary rather than just a last gen title with higher res and performance and calling it a day. As evidenced even more by last gen versions now being delayed to presumedly get them to run properly. Since the game has been in dev for something like 6 years, that means it started out as a last gen title and they made the effort to prioritize newer gen once it became available. Def looking forward to the inevitable sequel in UE5.

Set the Effects Quality to high instead of ultra, it gives you better reflections. similar to RT on.
@Bunta1987qwerty
@Bunta1987qwerty Год назад
It’s honestly pretty dumb they didn’t migrate it to ue5. Lumen ray tracing is less expensive, and looks just as good. The ray tracing looks bad in this game, in my opinion. Even ssr can create those reflections. The mirrors can be made using planar reflections too. No ray tracing needed. Additionally, the lack of nanite means these high geometry assets get overdrawn, causing significant performance loss while looking worse. I was hyped for this game until I heard they produced it from ue4 instead of ue5. A lot of the stutters in this game are probably due to world partition, which means the world is made of tiles. Travel in any direction, and it has to load all the shaders from the tile you’ve gotten within range of. It does this while dumping shaders from the ones that just went out of range. Ue5 is much better for many reasons.
@jankratochvil9779

Lumen + Nanite is yumy yumy compare to this and its only 10 fps drop compare to 40+ fps by rtx, with my amd gpu :D.
@mandrews6282
@mandrews6282 Год назад
Game’s been in dev for like 6 years. Migrating to UE5 is considerably more work than people assume it might be, and it’s a cross gen game so they’d also have to scrap the planned last gen console versions. I agree it would look amazing in UE5, likely where the inevitable sequel would be, but from a technical and financial standpoint it wouldn’t have made any sense for them.
@Bunta1987qwerty
@Bunta1987qwerty Год назад
@@mandrews6282 I’ve migrated a few projects, and apart from displacement being different, sky and atmosphere, and world partition, I haven’t really seen anything that’s difficult to fix. Of course this game is much larger than any of my projects, but they also have a whole dev team. They could have even just set aside a small team to work on migration, in case it didn’t work out. Even if they chose to delay it until Halloween, it would’ve been worth it, and ue5 has been around long enough that they could’ve made that decision long before they even announced a release date. All of the assets that don’t use displacement would work as is, and can be converted to nanite with a few clicks. The landscape could be exported without tiling, and then reimported, and displacement can still be done, it’s just a different process. Nearly everything is automated in migration, and you get specified errors and changes for the things that are broken. I think the benefits would’ve been worth it. Consider all of the games in recent history that sell poorly because of early reviews, and how much avoiding ue4 could have prevented that possibility.
@mandrews6282
@mandrews6282 Год назад
@@Bunta1987qwerty yah but you have to figure this has been a 6 year project, and this studio has never made a triple A game at this level before. The game had already had delays in UE4 alone so undertaking a complete migration would have been ill advised, even if they maybe could have pulled it off. The financial aspect may have been the bigger issue as well as UE5 means they have to cancel the previously advertised PS4 and One versions. That’s probably an even higher risk since they were already releasing one of the most controversial titles in recent years. An unnecessary migration is a serious risk for little gain really and overall a net loss.
@mandrews6282
@mandrews6282 Год назад
@@Bunta1987qwerty I was really just saying that it’s not a simple conversion. There is a decent amount of work migrating a game this size even from UE4 to 5, and would require redoing QA as well as other aspects. You’re right that it is easier than moving to a whole new engine or starting from scratch, for sure. But they wouldn’t have just been able to throw it in UE5, turn on Lumen and Nanite, and call it a day. Prob looking at at least 6 months to a year delay on top of the other delays they’ve already had. More if they wanted to get into meta human or the other features UE5 offers. I bet we will see a UE5 sequel though and I am impressed with Legacy as is as UE4 is nototiously finicky for open world projects.

The sunlight on the walls through windows is neat, and it brightens some dark areas up.....but overall the traditional method for this game is already so beautiful, it doesn't need ray tracing! I would have loved to see if it does anything in combat scenarios though. The floors for one are far more real looking in material and reflection without RT on.

Hogwartz Legacy seems to focus with Reflections and Lighting more I think they should've focused more so on Reflections and Shadows when it comes to ray tracing much like Shadow of the Tomb Raider did. Hogwartz itself needs to look darker and not cast light everywhere. Looked good with RTX off but some of characters of course looked a bit dull but with it on they looked really good, I'd prefer the characters look with ray tracing on but they need to tone down on ray tracing and pick which ones they want Shadow, Lighting, or Reflections as the game looks its faaar to refelctive with RTX on and looked better awith it off like I said. The Stone/Marbel flooring ya to reflective witht he lights.

I am a big fan of raytracing, but Hogwarts Legacy does not do a good job of showing it off. I agree with the other comments saying that the reflections are dialed up way too high. Take a look at the marble flooring in the first scene. Without RTX, you see that it consists of different tile patterns with varying degrees of roughness and therefore varying degrees of reflectiveness. With RTX on, it just looks like one uniform mirror like surface. I can hardly tell any difference between RT shadows and AO on vs off as well. Considering how much RT takes performance in this game, I'd recommend playing with it off.

I honestly think the RT implementation is really poor in this game. Reflection shoudl be different in different materials, and thats what happens without RT. With RT enabled, every reflective surface reacts the same and is very sharply reflective. Other than that, RT doesnt fix my biggest issue with the game which is the ambient occlusion, which is still screen-space even with RT on.

In this case I'll take the SSR over the RT reflections. RT makes all the floors look entirely too glossy and unrealistic. SSR is looking much more realistic even in the rain. Also turning off RT reflections gives you a very nice boost in performance. If they down-toned the aggressiveness of the gloss with RT on the game could potentially look great with it enabled. But as for now SSR wins all day. ~IMO~

"Metal and Plastic" together was a concept in the very early days of "human" existence to help the black reds to maintain shape and feel consistent inside a human-shaped body. Experiencing is believing and it is also a form of "programming". The more someone is programmed to have certain sets of behavior, eventually that set of behavior becomes the person. Think Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady. Social and linguistic programming helped her grow from a monkey to a fair lady.

Without FSR I get 45 fps and with FSR 2.0 I get 60 fps. It's not normal because the 6700 XT is not supposed to be able to get such good performance with those settings.
