During that storm I was stranded on the Isles of Scilly. The planes were grounded on St Mary's and the Scillonian couldn't leave Penzance. I was gutted when the storm cleared. What a great excuse to stay there.

The Freelander having a dead battery means it is already fitting in with the rest of the fleet. Having experienced similar wind speeds in the mountains on a few occasions (and having been blown off my feet more than once ) I know how scary it can be. In 1986 there was a famous storm where they recorded a 173 mph gust on Cairngorms and climbers were blown upwards on ropes on Ben Nevis and yet amazingly all the climbers and hillwalkers caught out in various locations across the Highlands survived. I suspect more by luck in many cases. That day I remember multiple cars with their windscreens and rear screens imploded in the car park at work, due ( I was told ) to pressure differences when there were big gusts of wind.

Living in the Scottish Borders near the coast we suffered storm Arwen, now I like a bit of bad weather but that was ridiculous and genuinely frightening even behind the walls of a 150 yr old home, so god knows what it was like up a lighthouse.

Wonderful to see the island again. And yes, I have enjoyed the view from the Marisco Tavern's gent's toilet many times - got to be the best view in the world from a gent's loo! I used to work on a boat that used to serve the island by standing in for the MS Oldenburg when she was out of service. We often took goods and supplies over. Unloading with the deck crane to the pier was always an interesting experience if any sea was running into the landing bay - with the boat rolling and rising with the sea. I got very good at that little mechanical dance in the end. And for a few years, probably between 2004 and 2008 ish, we would spend 10 days per year over at Lundy with a team of marine biologists surveying the underwater life all around the island. Had some wonderful evening sitting on the aft deck whilst anchored in the landing bay enjoying a BBQ and a few drinks. We also always took a RHIB with us, so we also got plenty of time to just go for little explores along the coast. The scenery is stunning. Our surveys involved us doing a lap of the island each day on the boat, and we would often stop for luch up in Gannet's Bay, very sheltered and lovely to sit there and just watch the seals having some fun. And of course many evenings were spent walking up that hill to the Marisco, time to relax with a pint or two of Old Lundy Light, with maybe a stroll across to the old lighthouse. Got to admit you chose a wonderful location to holiday! And nice to see the old deckchairs are still there - sat in them many a time. Yes, some great memories indeed of those years - even the time when we were standing in for the Oldenburg doing a supply run, and i ended up falling overboard from the back of the boat whilst tied up alongside the jetty in the middle of winter! That was a shock to the old system i can tell you. When I finally managed to drag myself back up one of the ladders on the side of the jetty both my skipper and the guy on the jetty were rolling around laughing their heads off! Even i had to see the funny side of it, mind you, it took a year or two for me to live that one down on the island i can tell you. Good times indeed. I still live in North Devon, just a few miles from Ilfracombe, so i often see the Oldenburg (she used to be loving called the Old and Buggered), but have not been back since those days, a little thing called MS put a stop to all of that kind of fun for me. But great to see you over there enjoying some very embracing weather, Eunice was bad enough 3 miles inland, must have been quite the show out there. I must admit i would have loved to have been on the island to see it, I love a nice calm sea, but it's even better when it's blowing a real gale and the sea is going mad! Your footage from the lighthouse of the storm was fantastic to watch, what a place to experience it. Did not realise you had this channel, have been subscribed to Furious Driving for a year or two now, but my ears pricked up when you mentioned Lundy in your latest Crown Vic episode, so just had to come over and have a look. Very glad I did.

Reminds me of the holiday my family went on in 1974, up to the North Cape in Norway. There is an 300 meter high cliff on the island and a monument along with a visitors building. The day we went there it was the thickest fog and you could barely see 30 meters! I went there in midsummer 1986 with my fiance and it was much more spectacular as you where able to see a long way out to sea, ships looked like dingys out there. But it really is a "once visit place" not much else to do. You sure picked the "right moment" to visit the island, but it made for an interesting watch! Thank you! :)

Very interesting, Matt. Beaufort scale 12 is a hurricane. That tops out at 83 mph. What you are getting is a Class 2 Hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. I had not realized that the Beaufort scale topped at Gale Force 12, or what followed. Wonderful what you learn on RU-vid. Glad you made it back to civilization! It is terrific that the Hippo proved itself so well. We did not get the diesel, just a rather anemic little gas engine that worked too hard for the meagre rewards. Have to say, the storm looked like fun!

You were almost in my neck of the woods Matt, I can see Lundy on a clear day from where I live! Glad you all made it off the island unscathed - James (nitrosilvia) was very amused by your situation in his last video. Side note, I used to live about 3 miles from Stonehenge. They've been talking about fixing the 2 into 1 carriageway traffic mess there for about 30 years at last count. Just going into Amesbury for a take away was a real chore during the summer months and it's probably even worse now that they've closed the slip road going past the entrance.

That was a great video, really enjoyed it. Thanks Matt. A suggestion to aid the radio reception in Hippo. My motorhome had appalling reception using a door mirror aerial. It was replaced with a Blaupunkt Autofun FunLine AM/FM windscreen aerial which is excellent. Easy to fit and needs a 12 volt supply. Recommended very highly. There are cheaper windscreen aerials but they are very poor. PS I sent you a tip regarding paint touch ups to bodyintheboot. Did you see it?

It was an experience and a half being there during the storm. We were thinking about the people waiting to come over on the Friday and wondered what everyone did, if they could stay locally or had to give up and go home. The newer buildings took a battering but the old ones only lost a few tiles luckily

There is water inside the top of the lighthouse metal floor ... that is truly not a good sign. Water will corrode the metal floor and the place were the two chairs with the great view (on good weather) stand will be in trouble ... of course outside there was a storm so maybe that's the cause for water leakage inside the lighthouse ..

Absolutely awesomtabulastic place to stay. Unfortunately yous were caught out by the biggest disadvantage of visiting most islands, no guarantee when you will return. Stunning place which is now firmly on the itinerary. There should be a switch to disarm the Motion Sensors somewhere to avoid the alarm draining the battery in future. Love Barnstaple, Bideford, Taunton and all around Devon and Somerset, need to get back there its been 19 years I think. Thank you so so much for taking the Hippo. The MINI or the Mercedes would have been unproblematic but the video would not have been so interesting without the camaraderie and generosity of 4x4 Enthusiasts getting you going again. @tonys1636 2 года назад
A shame about the weather, now you know what it was like for Lighthouse Keepers in the past, Eddystone would have had the waves crashing over it. If the alarm on Hippo can be turned off I would do so if storms are forecast or take its fuse out. Lucky no neighbours to complain about it, also leave the handrake off when parked at the coast for a long time, leave in park or use scotches. (bricks for those who don't know the term). Lesson learnt when living in N. Devon, not close to the coast but close enough for the air and rain to be salty in Nor'westerly winds. You should definitely go back but in Summer when hopefully nice weather, if you can get a booking. Hope the Furious family had a pleasent time, a week away from the world sounds idyllic but hours/ days spent catching back up again.
