This is a very informative review of Camillas. I can tell you that rooting and growing Camillas is a labor of love. My Grandparents moved into a house of a Master Gardener that had a collection of Camillas. He said some had come from a friend in Japan. I was able to root a double pink. I now live in the house I grew up in and my Camilla is now as tall as the house. I thought I lost it in the winter snowstorm of 2020 but it is still recovering and this year it is loaded with blooms and two are now opening. This just proves how slow they grow. Have a wonderful day.

Zone 8a, coastal NC. I love my camellias. I am always smitten with my sasanquas then after Christmas my japonicas put on the show. (I love the one I’m with!)

Thanks for your timely report! I'm in Zone 6. I have a Camellia Japonica called Freedom Bell (Christmas Bell?) that's Red and flowers are shaped like bells. It's at the North-East corner of the house. I've had it for at least 20 years and started hard pruning in 2020 because it got leggy. It grows new limbs where there was only a trunk and a limb. Then a Sasanqua white on the more North side of the house. It's a low grower and the flowers are smaller and spectacular!

Great video. I bought 2 a few yrs ago half off at Lowe's, mine are in contains for now. I think these would make a really nice house warming gift for a young gardener. Really any gardener, just taking slow growing into consideration.

Great informative video Janey! It feels like you are a Master Gardener already! I have several camellias along the side of my house that are sadly neglected. Fortunately they have perked up with all of the rain. I really wasn't aware that there were two types, so I will have to study the ones I have. "Plant Profile Playlist" - say that 3 times really fast, LOL! 🤪

Could you imagine if they made one hardy down to zone 3, with the beautiful flowers peaking out under a fresh dusting of snow…*sigh*…another flower that I will just have to enjoy through your garden! Getting 8 inches of snow tonight so love seeing the green leaves!

We moved here last year and yes I literally thought ours were roses the first time I saw them. 😂but I kept saying I’ve never seen roses quite like these. I’ve learned so much since then. They are the most beautiful part of an otherwise dull season. Ours are as tall as the house and bright red. I’m guessing they are the japonica, they are perfectly symmetrical, and the shiny glossy leaves. It’s my profile pic here on RU-vid 😊Thanks Janey!

Love your camellias. Sasanqua grow much faster than japonica which is why I've just planted one. I'm impatient lol

Looking at my beautiful camellias while you talk about them is a nice cold morning treat! I have had a terrible time getting new camellias established in my garden (this is normal), but I inherited two from the previous owners that are mature and beautiful. I will keep trying because I do want some that bloom later in the year. ❤️

I have four camellias on the side of my house in 9b. They’re a beautiful salmon color and start blooming in Jan. I bring them in and float them in decorative bowls. During the summer I have to cover them with shade cloth if temps reach 100 or higher. Otherwise, the leaves burn and wither. I sprinkle soil acidifier twice a year. They bring such joy.

We had Camilla’s in our last house. I loved the late blooms. They did get a fuzzy growth around the stems though it didn’t seem to hurt the plant. Thanks for all this good info. Happy Holidays 🎄🎄🎄

Love this info! I have 3 Camellias and will be getting a new one in 2023. I plan on getting a new one every year. Love them. 2 of mine are blooming now: Newly purchased October Magic Orchid, full of pink blooms and October Magic White Shi Shi, also in bloom now. I love floating their flowers in little glass bowls of water. 7B MS.

My aunt was able to air layer her pink perfection camellia. This gave her a bigger size baby camellia a lot faster than cuttings. I really want a pink or white camellia japonica in my garden

I just grabbed one of these because of you! Excited to watch & ALSO watch my camellia bloom this month. My leaves have some white speckling so I’m trying to determine if this is early powder mildew.

Hi there. How easy are they to grow in pots? Can they be shaped into topiaries?

Hi Janey! Just wanted to share that the Sacramento Camellia Society holds their show the first weekend in March at the Elk Club in the Pocket area of Sacramento. There are many people there who have been growing for many years that can give everyone great info on how to grow, propagate, and care for their camellia plants.
