If you are using the Holley Sniper EFI system to control ignition timing, Prestige Motorsports recommends two additional steps you should take to verify timing control is synced with the engine, and that the rotor is phased correctly with the distributor cap. See what those steps are and how to perform them in this week's Hardcore Tech video!

Thank you for being the first to show this highly anticipated product. A complete unboxing and install would be so helpful. Looking to get this unit for my 86 El Camino and have some concerns with fuel system, electric fans and you already answered the timing issue. Thank you for what you have done thus far but more videos will be greatly appreciated and helpful.

Thanks for the video. I have had my sniper for a week now and have contacted Holley and MSD for some clarifications with no real answers and this is the first video i have found.

Heres the real process.....Magnetic pickup distributors need to be set off of a 45* reference point with magnetic pickup to reluctor blade dead-on and #1 pointer as close to #1 as you can get when being initially set with pointer set at neutral position..Then distributor gets locked down. This makes the magnetic pickup set point now at 45*..My power median was 30* so after locking down the distributor I rotated my engine balancer to 30* and with a modified cap with a window drilled in the top at #1 wire I dialed-in my rotor and locked down the screws..... After all was set and done I verified on the handheld first using the handheld under startup disabled the fuelpump and cranked the engine to see if recieved a rpm signal and once verified I plugged the fuse in and started the engine using 15* as my reference point on the Static Timing Checker on the handheld to check my timing and you know what...It was dead accurate and was told how to do the process from a Holley technician.....He actually said I can use between 45-60* as a referrence point with a magnetic distributor but it needs to be changed in the ignition parameters if running 60* and if running a Dual Sync it must be referenced at 50*......... Another tip when it comes time to changing the cap n rotor;-So you dont have to go through the rephase process again you simply change the brass rotor tip and the stainless spring thong.... Also noone ever covers people installing these in engines with mileage and stretched timing chains....I suggest those people putting a brand new chain n gearset also an accurate balancer to start out with.................

Holly crap how did you come up with that! Thanx. Im considering a Holley Sniper install since I moved to 6500ft elevation. My Summit carb is pissing fuel all over my engine ( Im still working on adjustments). This is great info to know. Thank you

So the timing was verified at 36*. You then phase the rotor and notice it's not "sweeping" across #1 as you like, You remove the cap, turn the adjustable rotor slightly and reinstall and check your sweeping and then you are done. Did this not change your timing?

I’d like to use the Holley Sniper EFI with my Chevy 383. What are the pros and cons of the Holley Dual Sync vs Holley Hyperspark distributors? Thank You

Hey David thanks for the message. Are you looking to stay Mopar? We could do a 408 small block? Or LS Swap? Check out our engines here. Happy to help with a detailed quote if you are interested. Can work with you and your budget to put together a nice package. www.prestigemoto.com/custom-engines.html

I am looking at Holly Sniper & FiTech, What Distributor is best , I have 383 stoker Chevy with HDI now. I do Not want spark boxes under hood = CLEAN Show set up.

Harford Capps I also have a 383 stroker Chevy going in an 89 Wrangler and am considering Holley’s Sniper or FiTech. Either way I need a dizzy. I’m hearing MSD Pro billet would plug directly into these EFI units to control timing without an external spark box. Getting an actual part number from someone in the know would sure be helpful.

A Magnetic Distributor such as an MSD distributor or a Holley Dual Sync Distributor is needed to have the Sniper EFI control the ignition timing and would not require the CD box.

What would be the advantages or disadvantages using an MSD vs Dual Sync on the Holley Sniper? Which dizzy works best with the Holley Sniper?

Both would work fine. The disadvantage with the MSD is having to phase the rotor in as the video shows. But the advantage is price. Its a little less than the Holley Dual Sync. The Holley has a very simple phasing procedure and does not require an adjustable rotor. The cost is a little more plus you have to get a harness adapter. I would recommend looking at both setups in the Sniper User Manual available on Holley's site: documents.holley.com/199r11031r.pdf

Need some help! The ignition is much more advanced on the timing lamp than the ECU says. I have a terminator X with a MSD pro billet magnetic pickup (PN85501). It’s a Chevy 571. What I have done: 1. I set the engine in 50* BTDC. 2. I adjust the elector wheel so it lines with the pickup sensor. 3 lock the distributor. 4. Rotating the engine to 30* BTDC 5. Phasing the adjustable rotor so it lines with the 1 tower of the cap. 6. In the Terminator X I set the reference angle at 50* and the inductive delay to 130. 7. I start the engine and set the static timing to 5* in the terminator X. But the timing lamps is showing 45* it’s a difference of 40* What I’m I doing wrong! I appreciate if someone can help me what to do. Thanks, Philip.

After the rotor and cap instalation and initial set to 15, my timing on the balancer reads zero. Am i suposed to keep turning the distributor till it reads 15 again?
