In this video, I'll be reacting to bad reviews I found of Hollow Knight on Metacritic, Google Reviews, and Steam. Some of them are quite interesting, but they're all surprisingly similar, all bearing a single common theme: salt.

They still gave the game a bad review, thereby dragging down the user score, which ultimately misinforms people to the quality of the game if they are thinking of buying it. Just imagine if even half of these morons would stop and think for two seconds about what a "0" actually means. The game would receive better general scores, which would mean more people would see how great it is, which would mean more people would buy it, which means Team Cherry gets more money, which means more of these type of passion project games can be made in the future. Unneccesarily dragging down a score because you're a memelord (or giving a positive one for a bad game, at that.) just harms the developers and misinforms consumers. Nothing "legend" about it.

There isn't much of a story to Hollow Knight. However, it is instead full of lore. Lore and story are two different things. Lore is what happened before you start playing or when you are not at a spot. It's often told through dialogue or details/changes in details or difficulty of a spot you were in before. Story is what happens in the game as you play it... SPECIFICALLY in the area you're at. The story typically bows down to you because it is told through the gameplay and your movements or things said or done by your character specifically. This is not to say Hollow Knight has no story, as you can choose where you want to go and you can go pretty much anywhere, following any path and making your own story, but it is still lacking. However, the lore is where HK shines the most and it's the lore, not the story, that Mossbag and several others focus on.
@chrisbreeden6242
@chrisbreeden6242 2 года назад
Also, I will say, lore is always the better of the two to focus on if you want to make the world feel alive. That is something some of these reviewers don't seem to understand.

Yeah... people shouldn't play a metroidvania if they don't enjoy exploring for its own sake, getting lost, and revisiting old areas with new abilities. I also tried to get someone to play Outer Wilds, but they absolutely hated it because they didn't want to explore and learn and experiment. They just wanted to complete objectives and reach the end as fast as possible. They were pissed that their progress kept getting reset, and totally failed to realize that nothing had been lost. The "checkpoints" are the player's knowledge... and the only reason they weren't making progress is because they refused to pay attention or learn.

Getting lost for a total of over 60 hours is one of the biggest reasons I love this game so much, as it’s just so refreshing to walk through the ruined kingdom of Hallow Nest with the simple but beautiful art, the ambiance in sound for anything and everything, the soundtrack that fits in to the surroundings in such a harmony of emotion that you could just explore without purpose other than to just feel for hours upon hours, the way the game grasps you into getting lost in a way where you can always find a way other that that of which you came to find your way again. I don’t have any more words to describe exactly how I feel about getting lost, and why it’s such a big part of the experience for me.

I remember being stuck on Forgotten Crossroads for about 8 hours. Not because of game design or anything, I was just having too much fun running back and forth, getting into nooks and crannies, beating Brooding Mawlek before finding out about the False Knight, and just filling Sly's pockets, checking the Black Egg after doing anything. I remember at the time thinking "oh well, the game is meant to be speedrun in a few hours, so I must be near the end. Its such a sweet and wonderful game." .....then I found greenpath. And now I have 200+ hours on that file, and a radiant hall of gods, currently trying to get some bindings on P5. Looking back, at the time the crossroads felt so much larger.

I finished 85% of the game in 30 hours on my first time playing the game. And you actually don't realize how long and how good the game is till you reach 8 to 10 hours of gameplay. Unlocking abilities and charm hunting is definitely one of the most entertaining aspects in the game, the story is absolutely flawless. And when I talked with my friends about this game they told me "is hollow knight this 2d game" I spent like 5 seconds to answer this question because the design made it look somehow 3d. As a casual player I can easily say that hollow knight is my favorite game and I played and finished many other games like both Spider-Man games all uncharted 1,2,3 and thief's ending, both tomb raider games, dark souls and elden rimg

The Knight actually does have a great memory, for exactly the reason you stated: it could explore the entirety of Hallownest, then sit down on a bench and draw a detailed map of the entire kingdom all at once. Only 1 bench is mandatory after all. No mind to think, lots of room to fill that little head with the memory of paths trodden and then empty it all out onto paper. ...the mandatory bench is obviously on the descent into City of Tears, alongside Quirrel. If you didn't sit down on that bench for a while on your first playthrough you are heartless :P

You know, I had a similar experience that a lot of the bad reviewers described with my first play through of hollow knight (dying to nail knock back in stupid ways, getting lost, getting stuck, etc.), but the main difference between me and them is that I am a rational human being who can comprehend that some things are my fault, not the game’s. I eventually adapted to the nail knock back, I would go do something else if a boss was giving me too much trouble (cough cough lost kin cough cough), and if I, for example, never found shade cloak because I never turned on the lighthouse when I went there the first time, I would have just laughed it off as my being an idiot (definitely not based on a true story). Do you like monochromatic paintings? I hate them. If I see a red monochromatic painting I might say I hate it because I hate monochromatic paintings. Because I hate this genre of painting. Same things for garbage games like Hollow Knight with one difference: Hollow Knight even sucks as being a metroidvania. Graphics: 9 years old kid's drawing, super dark and dull. Music: Repetitive af and boring. I had to cut down the music in the jungle because it was driving me crazy. Difficulty: None, just spam healing and it should be okay. Gameplay: Repetitive too, you only have one single weapon and some spells. Get close to an enemy and click. Lore: Whereas secret lore very well hidden works for short games (and those short games even tell you more than what Hollow Knight does). Spending the whole game not understanding anything to the story sucked. If you don't go on RU-vid watch a one hour video to get the lore there is no way you understand anything about what you are doing. Characters: All plain, repetitive again and boring. You read their first lines and you read them all. They never change, there is no evolution: Zote: I am better than you. Bagman: I want to be strong. Mapguy: I like exploring etc.... You see them for 6 seconds in the whole game and they keep saying the same thing. Ergonomy: Terrible, you have to hit each wall and then try to go through them if you do not want to miss a charm that you will never be able to find later without using Google. This game is way too overrated and not worth it at all. Disappointed, if I knew that earlier I would have made steam refund me it.

@@Oyou20 Graphics: It’s an art style. Just because it’s cartoonish doesn’t mean it looks like a 9 year old drew it. Backgrounds are also extremely detailed and animations are clean. Simple art style also means more people can easily draw fan art, which is something a lot of fans of the game enjoy. The darkness makes sense, you’re underground most of the time. Not dull either, I just think you’re monitor is broken. Music: I don’t know what to say. Maybe you just hate pianos that much. If the Greenpath, I mean…”jungle”…music drove you insane, then you probably have some other mental issue. Greenpath is the most calm and inviting theme in the entire game. Difficulty: The game isn’t that easy man. You saying just spam heal tells me you never got that far into the game. Plenty of bosses punish you for healing in the open, so you’re required to dodge and manage your soul in order to not die. That’s where the difficulty comes from. With your logic every game in the world is easy because “just dodge and heal”. Gameplay: Having a single weapon and three spells isn’t a bad thing. The reason it works so well is because your charms can augment how you play. You can build around nail arts, build around your spells, build around your dash doing the damage for you, build around nail spam which you seem to favor. Later in the game you unlock new movement abilities that alter how you approach dodging attacks. Enemy design is also consistently evolving and testing your ability to use all of your options together. It’s fun to learn how to master each skill, which is why so many people still play this game years later Lore: Common complaint I hear for this game and other game like Dark Souls. Yes, the story is very non-linear, but if you don’t understand the premise by the end of the game then that’s your fault. I completely understood there was an infection, I was a vessel, and vessels are the only beings that can contain the infection. By the time I defeated the Hollow Knight, I completely understood what my adventure was about without looking up a video or checking the wiki. I understand it doesn’t work for some people, but that doesn’t mean it is bad. Characters: The characters aren’t supposed to go on some elaborate developmental character arc. Most are side characters that the player may or may not talk to, so there isn’t enough time for all of them. Even then, Quirrel and Cloth at least get their respective arcs still. Cornifer is a map man, he sells maps. You shouldn’t expect any other development from the map guy and if you do you are just being picky. Zote is also a joke character. He exists to make you laugh, which is why he is a meme and nothing more. Hornet is a character the majority of people care about. She’s the only true child of the Pale King and serves as Hallownest’s last defender. Upon meeting you she is dismissive and thinks of you as nothing else but another stray vessel unfit to become anything more. As she follows you in your adventure she becomes less hostile and instead respects your presence. After you prove yourself she gives you the Kingsbrand and pushes you to become the next Hollow Knight. This culminates in the true ending where she flies in during the fight and helps you enter the Hollow Knight’s mind to defeat the radiance. There’s the change you begged for. It’s right there and you ignored it. Ergonomy: Walls that can be broken are visibly cracked and walls that can be passed through don’t have a flat wall, floor, or ceiling. Your eyes do the work and if you think you have to hit EVERY single wall you are just being stupid. The game is not overrated
@Oyou20
@Oyou20 Год назад
@@ghostlypenguin4417 Graphics: Some cartoonish drawings doesn't look like a 9 years old child drew them. But for Hollow knight it is the case and your fan art excuse to justify the bad design of those over simplified characters is stupid. You can also draw a very complex character by simplifying it by yourself if it is too difficult. The backgrounds are way too blurry, they probably exaggerated that to hide the details they can't draw. Also if the game wanted to be that realistic because it happens underground it should be pitch black. But that's not what I was talking about. 80% of areas are just black and sad/dull. And this is not a monitor problem look at the forgotten crossroads, deepnest, the ancient bassin, the resting grounds, the sewers, the howling cliffs and dirtmouth. All those areas look almost the same (maybe less the sewers but it is till dark as hell). Music: Please listen to Greenpath 30 minutes straight like you have to do in the game. IT is awful. NOt because of the piano. But because the WHOLE music has those exact 13 same notes that repeat over and over again (and even inside those 13 notes it is repetitive, awful music). Difficulty: Not every game where you can heal is easy. But hollow knight sure is with those OP charms that makes you heal in 2 seconds or even more unbalances the snail charm. Most youtubers I watch did exactly the same thing, never use spells just spam hit, and when you take a damage heal. THe bosses are so slow that you will always manage to do it. And you get so many soul per hit. Stupid. Gameplay: I would rather say having a single weapon and that's all since using spells is dumb when you can heal. Then your charm thing is just bs is bad faith. You know like me 99% of charms are never used. IF you look on RU-vid there are only two types of players: those who just take every charms to get soul and spam regen. OR the speedrunners that always take the exact same charms for more damages, hitting faster etc.... Also I don't see how charms can replace the pleasure to play with different weapons according to each enemy for example. Lore: I have a hard time believing you and I think you are mostly lying. The boring zombie apocalypse like infection is understandable I agree. But I don't believe anything to your vessel thing. I never saw anyone getting it in a let's play. They talk about sacrifice but I don't remember any place where they tell you the vessel is the only thing that can contain the infection, especially before defeating the true final boss. Characters: Exactly what I say. The characters do in the best case ONE THing. Quirrel opens the squid's cage and that's all. Otherwise he just keeps repeating he forgot why he is here and stuff, Cloth: keeps repeating they want to fight, and they die at the end. That's all. I recently finished Celeste, check it out if you want to see what I call a character. You can't predict what they will do even if they have a personality, they interact more with you and you feel closer (even if you hate them) to them. They feel more alive than the lame Hollow Knight NPCs. About Hornet good luck to know a spider and the king fricked together to make her born without looking the one hour video. She is boring in the game, she is just the badass girl we see in every movies/games that stay mysterious and fight you. Plain and boring. I still give you one point about Hornet, the only second where I felt like a NPC did something interesting was when she decided to interfere in the Hollow Knight fight. And it lasts 4 seconds. 4 seconds of characters in the whole game. Ergonomy: The crack are just some areas with 0 opacity on the walls, when the wall is black on a very dark background, the "holes" look black too. I don't want to waste my time checking at each wall and focusing only on that instead of the game. There is a ton of non flat walls too what you say makes no sense. Hitting every walls make you sure you you saw well. Watch any RU-vid video, and I am sure when you played you did that too. A lot of youtubers hit walls and react when they hear the cracking wall sound. Another stupid thing about that, I had to cheat with Google to find the two last charms because if you missed them because you didn't see the stupid cracks you have no way to find them back without walking in every rooms of the game again, they only did a map of the grubs. So stupid. (the charms I missed were spell twister and deep healing or something, an invisible wall on the roof and a cracked wall in the crystal mine. Trash game.

When i first played hollow knight i was running around aimlessly in crossroads, collecting money and just trying to see what was hidden. I refused to go near the boss because i felt too intimidated lol. After many many hours and no progression and being too stubborn to face the conflict head on, i downloaded the complete map and tried to see what i can explore in the meantime, but realised that this wasn't a quick one-trip pony of a game, this was a giant that needed to be tackled bit by bit. I was so overwhelmed and in a way put off by the sheer size of the task that lied ahead that i just put the game down and left it for a few months, but the mechanics and aesthetic of it were just so magnetic and fun and i felt like i was missing out big time, and when i finally revisited the game i was so so excited to get on with the journey. I remember being so happy entering Greenpath, it felt like such a reward and it gave me the courage to push forward even more until the end. I only have the pantheons left to complete (as a non boss fight lover it's an absolute nightmare) but have spent +250hrs playing and every second spent was an absolute joy. I feel like people who shit on this game just need to allow themselves to get lost in the journey and not just give up when things get tough. It's incredibly therapeutic and fun at the same time and it's a game that just about anyone can enjoy and fall in love with if they would just put in the work and time

I've broken down these complaints into 3 categories 1. I've never played a Metroidvana and have no idea how they work and why they won't hold my hand and show me where to go (funny enough HK was my first Metroidvania and I did find it confusing at times, but that's what kept drawing me back) 2. I am bad at this game, and I don't want to improve or learn (I'm no game expert myself, but if it takes you over 10 tries to beat False Knight or Hornet, you're playing the game wrong) 3. I am a boring person, who does not see a reason to have a sense of exploration for either the map or the lore, and I also have no taste in art or music.

As someone who struggled with that feeling of directionlessness: I understand that person who was second to last. I have the internal directional skills of a busted compass and there were definitely a couple times in the game where I had absolutely no idea where to go. I do still like the game because of all its other positives (solid movement & combat, good boss design outside of a couple, beautiful visuals and solid soundtrack) but that is 100% a valid feeling, though granted it's one that the Wayward Compass solves
@RedFloyd469
@RedFloyd469 2 года назад
Literally the first area of the game past the tutorial has a guy that sells you a map, and as you said, Wayward Compass, a charm you can get in that very same area, solves all issues with directionlessness. Best of all: it's entirely optional whether you wish to use it or not. Now don't get me wrong: I'm not saying I have a good sense of direction, I don't. I don't mind when a game gives you quest markers or something similar. But for Hollow Knight, there really isn't an excuse to defend this silly argument. Exploration is exactly what metroidvanias are all about. That's the draw. You don't have to like exploration, but then don't buy exploration games ffs. This is the same for me but for Pure Vessel. All the other bosses I beat with someone looking over my shoulder, able to analyze the bosses pattern better than I bcs I was busy dodging. Then, recently, I beat NKG in less than an hour 30 and holy crap did I realize 'I'm actually kinda good at this game' and I was super happy. HK actually helped me with my mental health in various ways such as giving me a good sleep schedule bcs I had to wake up at 7 to beat my brother to the xbox with enough time to beat WP or Radiance. The ambience, the heart in the background, the music giving it a feeling like it's a dance where one miss step means you die just feels amazing! It's so intense and fun that even though I kept getting angry and my hands started to hurt my burning urge to win and sheer enjoyment of the whole thing just made me say "okay one more try". And then half an hour later on my 20th last try I said the same thing. Improving and succeeding just felt amazing and finally beating him after so long knowing how much I had to improve and get better just made it even better. To me nightmare king Grimm shows that a burning desire to improve and succeed along with just sheer enjoyment can go a super super SUPER long way.

9:44 I'll admit, I had a similar experience to this reviewer at one point. But unlike them, instead of leaving a 0 star review when I felt stuck between brick walls, I just looked stuff up, because I enjoyed the game and wanted to continue with it, and voila, I'm no longer stuck. I tried to play most of it without spoiling myself of course but once I started to dread searching everywhere again I decided to go to Google I do sort of wish there was an optional way to see what specific rooms still have stuff hidden, because not everything has obtainable map markers like the grubs do, and there's no way I would have discovered all the breakable walls on my own, particularly the one that locks the entire Grimm storyline behind it
@Splitcyclewastaken
@Splitcyclewastaken 2 года назад
Something akin to the map rooms in super metroid? that game puts a lil dot on a room that contains a secret and finding the map room fills your whole map in, thereby revealing what rooms have stuff hidden in them without actually showing you how they're hidden. Cornifer fills the purpose of the map on its own but they could have had a modified thing where you find a certain other npc within a region and if you've got the map already you can pay them to mark either one or all rooms that have secrets, or perhaps just the secrets that you can currently access. I think it is. . . maybe against the spirit of the game's focus on exploring to do so, but I could see the appeal of such a feature. Alternate option, something like the x-ray visor, also from super metroid, which when used on a wall will reveal if it's a normal wall or if it needs a special tool to open.
@CaseyLabAnimations

@@Splitcyclewastaken yeah, something like that... something i think that could have worked is after buying every map from cornifer and he goes home, you could talk to him there and pay him to put a random marker on your map locating something of interest you haven't discovered. as he's scouting and mapping areas he must have some rumors or suspicions of those things. and it's not like you'd get these hints for free

On my blind play-through, I missed so many things and b/c of the requirement of some abilities and the size of the map, I spent over half of my play-through walking around. Don't get me wrong, I liked the game and at first, the novelty of walking around and figuring things out was great you get to the maxed size of the map and are looking for the one thing you need, and it starts to become a bad game.

However, after beating false knight, I went right instead of left (because I thought the boss was only for geo) and missed vengeful spirit. I wandered around the Crossroads for a long time, beat gruz mother, brooding mawlek, rescued sly. When I looked at the map, I thought "oh, false knight? I already went there, there's no need to go back" I literally bought everything I could from iselda, sly, and salubra. I thought one of these items was how to get to the next area. I used lantern to go to c peaks. I went through dark room, fell into r grounds, and got d nail. It took me 5 hours to beat xero, because my bench was the c peaks dark room bench. @@Shawblade Usually by the time you're spending hours farming geo for items from shops you should have thought, "I must have missed something"

@@AndrewJohnson-ny5nx I thought that I would need the items to progress further into the game, that's why I farmed geo to buy them.

only boss i felt annoying was sentinel hornet without ismas tear to do the shortcut but that was just because I am absolutely awful at predicting wether shell dash or do the silk spin thing (and then as soon as I got ismas tear for no other reason than the tension of having to go through primal aspids again I breezed it)

Actually the complaints about having to walk your way to the boss after every death is one that I understand, in Metroid Dread you respawn right outside of the arena. The learning curve stays the same, but the experience is a lot smoother.

If they actually dislike the graphics of HK, they must be one of those people that won’t play Minecraft because “it’s graphics are all pixelated.”

As someone who gave up on hollow knight a few years ago and came back recently (played all the way through finishing pantheon 5), some of these reviews make sense. The reason I gave up is because I fell into deepnest way too early with only the dash, sat at a bench down there and couldn’t figure out how to get out. But boy am I glad I came back!
