Welcome to my workshop! This video is all about hollow forms. I’m turning an open hollow form here, so we can get the camera in to see what is going on and show all the pitfalls you’ll encounter when turning a hollow form.
I’m using my favoured Woodcut ProForme tools ‪@woodcut‬ but I’ll show you other tools and various techniques to take your hollowing turning to the next level!
This video is packed with tips and tricks to help you create stunning hollow forms. Enjoy!

Great video showing the ease at which the Proforme cuts. Matthias Bachofen Beer introduced me to this years ago on his visit to Canada. Great tool for hollowing that I use very often with my flower vases.

Nice video Colwin and thanks for your tips. The Woodcut Proforme is also number 1 for me, but the Hamlet works also very nice.

You are very modest Colwin, that's not a criticism but a compliment 😊. From my modest position 😂 you're a fantastic turner and instructor up there with the best. Wishing you all the very best in all you do.

Thank you for the great video. I’ve been using a hook tool but it’s hard to get it in on the bottom corners and I’m limited on the shapes I can hollow out. It can also dig in unexpectedly on thin walls. I have a pro forme flex on the way and am looking forward to having better control of the cut and hopefully being able to do a better variety of shapes.

Hi ya. So glad I’ve found these videos, I miss you from the Axminster ones. I’m interested in how the swan neck works as I’ve got one but not sure I. Using it correctly
@ColwinWay
@ColwinWay 4 дня назад
Thanks for the kind words, when using the swan neck just make sure you dont put the bent section on the tools rest as it will try and twist

Love the video. How would you sand the inside?
@ColwinWay
@ColwinWay 4 дня назад
If the inside void was as big as this one you can sand in the regular way but if small like the Yew form then I would try

Thank you for a great video. One question if I may. Is it correct that the general rule for end grain hollowing, whether it be a goblet / box with a small bowl gouge or a large hollow form with a hollow tool; is to go from the centre outwards to the rim? Whereas for side grain hollowing (bowl), you go from the outward rim to centre? Thanks, Joe 🙂
@ColwinWay
@ColwinWay 4 дня назад
Exactly that Joe however I do do a series of plunge cuts at time on a hollow form which make great sizing cuts

Am I right that the ProForme is not intended for outboard turning? (ie lathe rotating the other way)

What do you think about the Easywood hollowing tools, or are they a bit of a gimmick
@ColwinWay
@ColwinWay 4 дня назад
Ill be honest with you, I love the easywood hollowing tools, they are good for small opening hollow form where you need to poor out shavings, in my opinion they are the best carbide hollowers
@larryhill6187
@larryhill6187 4 дня назад
When setting this tool how much of the cutter is exposed?
@ColwinWay
@ColwinWay 4 дня назад
About the thickness of a piece of paper and start at 45 degs and slowly twist the tool until it bites

Would the Woodcutter still be the best tool for hollowing dry timber? Also how do you remove the chatter/bumps that remain after using hollowing tools?
@ColwinWay
@ColwinWay 4 дня назад
If the timber is very dry then it might be better to go with a carbide tipped tool such as the Easywood. Shear scraping is the best away to remove the small bumps

Q.i had another go turning holly but always find next day it splits like mad. Should I leave a large lump to dry standing up leave it couple of years
@ColwinWay
@ColwinWay 4 дня назад
Hey Calum, Holly is a tricky one, I would still rough turn it to about 15mm but be prepared to lose a few
