Maybe not! The union does not want actors to work on any productions at all! I am an Indi Film Producer, I work with non-union projects and more significantly bigger budget union projects. It would be great if the union said "Work on Indi Projects and show Hollywood there are alternatives!"
@MichaelThomas-ll1hw
@MichaelThomas-ll1hw Год назад
For people who aren’t in unions yeah… all the current union members aren’t allowed to partake in any indie projects of any kind … they’re very strict. If you’re part of a union for UPS and you’re on strike hoping for better wages, etc, you’re not allowed to go deliver for FEDEX until UPS meets your demands. That’s called being a “scab”. The free market millionaires will start supporting indie projects because they won’t have to deal with the unions… it will be looked at as “gig work”… air b&b, Uber, Door Dash…. All of these “gig” sources of income are sold as better alternatives or ways to earn income on your time and terms…. But Taxi unions, hotels (who employ thousands of people in cities),
@littleboots7629

@@MichaelThomas-ll1hwyes alternatives are an option thats capitalism. But with the hotel and airbnbs and cabs and urber is the taxi and hotels are still there. They are staples. A business is a business.. independent film depends on big Hollywood… cause that’s what allows Hollywood actors to do smaller passion projects. You make 15 mil on marvel so you can then work for scale on a Indy film about an orphan who wants to become a painter.

They are not greedy. They are not making the money they used to with streaming. Studios are losing money. There are two sides. If you don't have investors, then you cannot operate. If it was up to the actors to manage the business, they would be bankrupt in a week. You can not pay 200 million dollars to make a film and only gross 20 million. Actors needs to stick to what they know which is NOT how to make money.
@roxanne_

@@ST-rj8iuI’m sorry but “they are not greedy” line is just so funny to me. Thanks for the input Bob Iger, but we don’t care if a major corporation loses business we just want to be paid fairly and make people happy with our products.
@ST-rj8iu
@ST-rj8iu Год назад
@@roxanne_ yes and without that business you don't have a job. They cannot lose money and go bankrupt. You clearly don't know the difference between net and gross profit. You also don't understand EBITDA. You are funny and don't know anything about business. Actors are replaceable for the most part. Just like fast food workers. the top 2% are the ones with talent. The rest of you are just playing yourselves. BTW...Bob Iger doesn't care about you either. That is why you will go broke. You are paid fairly. AI will replace you as it should. They can make faces and bodies with a computer for background. This will lesson the carbon footprint of all the travel for actors to do nothing. It is better for the environment to start using more green screen.
@resa574
@resa574 Год назад
@@roxanne_ If there are no profitable entertainment businesses then actors can't be paid at all Anyone funding a project is expecting to make a positive return, and media already is not that appealing of an investment The industry is going to die if the majority of investments don't make money at a more consistent and reliable rate. If not, then even less people are going to survive in the industry and all the power will forever be concentrated in people who already made it, aka limiting upward mobility

Can relate. I had an experience with Motion Capture and voice acting and have to say even though gaming industry is a colossus these days, voice over actors and mo cap performers are not fully considered 'equal' talent as traditional actors. What's really interesting right now is that the mainstream, 'regular' actors demand royalties for their digital likeness when it's used on new projects they are not technically involved with. Something MoCap actors could relate to... What really shoud be addressed is the disparity by default between the wages of (male) actors and the rest of the film crew that are excruciating. The so called 'below-the-line' workers who are not considered 'talent' and yet are essential to the whole production process. PS. You almost saw me as Leon in the new Resident Evil games.

Very insightful, Makayla. In a fair world, working actors/writers/creators would be valued and paid equally. I majored in Creative Media (specifically in Screenwriting but I also focused on Public Relations and Digital Communication) so I can have other options because I know from the get go acting/writing is an industry that's based on big connections, and many I know who had prestigious acting training didn't even get one bit of opportunity on the screen. Just graduated now, and I'm focusing on PR/social media in finding jobs, though I'm still thinking if I should continue writing scripts/acting - probably as a side job (I've always done community theater and may just be happy continuing with it). I also have original songs I release on iTunes and Spotify. With everything that's going on including the strike and rise of AI, I don't want to be in an industry that always makes us compete for jobs/roles, where we always have to jump from one project to another and live from paycheck to paycheck. For now, I'm seeking stability, and if I do get in the industry, I'd be fine with Hallmark and non-Hollywood media productions/companies. Let me know how everyone get on. All the best to you all.

As a writer/creator, this is sad but will be a great thing in the end. I hope this inspires not only people in the industry, but other industries to strive for more and not just accept what’s given. Yes we all have to put food on the table, but it does not excuse the fact that we are the ones doing the work. Maybe we just become autonomous. I spent almost every night watching television, but as reality shows became more prevalent, my television watching began to reduce. I then, through my son and daughter, began to get interested in community theatre, first working backstage before going on stage. Over the past 20 odd years I have acted / sang in, worked on, wrote, or directed many community theatre productions. I hardly watch television now, I don't have time. I'm from the Philippines. I used to fantasize about becoming a Hollywood actress and moving to LA when I was a kid. But my middle-class family could not afford it. Now, I'm 30 years old and working for an ordinary insurance company. I'm glad I did not pursue acting as a career, even though I studied theatre arts, communication, and acting in college. What I've come to realize is, Hollywood is simply any other industry. Actors are like other humans doing their craft and working for a job. They should NOT be put on a high pedestal, as if they're above any other human beings just because they are those we see on social media, TV, or film. There are only a few people out there who pursued acting because it's their passion or natural in-born talent. The majority of the population pursues it in hopes of fame, glam, image, and money. What makes me even sad is that the middle-class actors including those creatives like the staff, the writers, the stylists, and those behind the scenes are not paid well. They're SO undervalued. And the 2% which consists of the "spoiled superstars" we know do little effort, but they get billions of dollars in honor of their reputation and bankable names in the industry. The allocation is just insanely UNFAIR.

Reading about the lack of residuals was sad, even worse was the AI shit the studios were proposing. Silly that one of the ceos said that it was unreasonable while he gets paid handsomely along with some ridiculous bonuses. Every screenwriting book, talking head and other people always talking about "STORY IS KING" well pay the damn writers. They are nothing without the writers, and even though there is material I do not care to watch, there are still diamonds in the dirt so its stupid to me that these folks are struggling. Spielberg saw the writing on the wall, too many movies costing 200+ million dollars and flopping, being so risk adverse you almost refuse to give new and hungry filmmakers a chance, nearly wiping out the mid budget film that folks cling onto whatever Nolan, Villeneuve, and Peele release in the studio system. So much fucking greed and honestly I hope it all burns down and shit can start over. Like William Goldman said, "Nobody knows anything."

I'm not a filmmaker in any way, but it does make sense that this is perhaps the most important hollywood strike ever. The plateau of streaming services coupled with the forthcoming capabilities of AI means that all creatives have to make sure they aren't being taken advantage of. It makes sense that the studios would want to optimize their profits, but using people's talent in perpetuity without compensating them accordingly is quite greedy. I just hope that the language of the final agreement has quite a bit of foresight in it (i.e., doesn't simply think about what AI is capable of today but of what it's likely capable of 10-20 years from now).

In the heart of Hollywood's bright domain, A saga of greed brings forth a strain, The curtain falls on stages grand, As actors and writers take a stand. Hollywood is shutting down, it seems, A realm of fantasies, hopes, and dreams, Greed's allure has cast its spell, Yet artists rise, their stories to tell. Writers with their pens of fire, Crafting tales that never tire, They've inked the scripts of silver screens, Now demanding rights beyond the scenes. Actors, too, with talents vast, Stepping into roles so vast, Their passion fuels each frame and line, But greed's shadow seeks to undermine. Together they unite, hearts aligned, For fairness and respect, they've signed, A strike declared, a drama unfolds, In the heart of stories yet untold. Hollywood is shutting down, it's true, As writers and actors voice their view, A tale of unity in the face of greed, A battle for what their craft needs. May the negotiations find a way, To mend the cracks that mar the day, In this realm where stories bloom, Let harmony and justice resume. As Hollywood pauses, the spotlight dimmed, May resolutions be soon trimmed, From this struggle, a stronger creed, Where creativity triumphs over greed.

As an actor myself, I've learned that you should accept any job, cause when it comes to the entertainment industry you want to take any opportunity doesn't matter if you play as a tree or it doesn't matter how many lines you have. The only thing that is wrong with AI is that it can be illegal if they use someone's face without their permission or approval can be considered copyrighted, but it would be different if the actor signed a contract or an agreement. Background actors don't get paid a lot, because mostly supporting, recurring, and main roles would get paid the most because their characters are what portray the story, while background characters are there to add more realism in a public setting or background setting. But the lack of episodes on streaming services does display that they should be less greedy and focus more on making entertainment and respectable payments. But AI has already taken over some jobs, from artists, singers/rappers, and now actors.

How many people will be job less and after to start over in a whole other career. Lets say the studios never give in to the demands what will happen then. You guys can't strike forever, you have to eat, pay bills etc. So the studio exces are waiting to see how long you guys can keep this up. they have the money to keep this up 5 plus years. Plus they can get content from youtube people and reality tv for cheap. RU-vid people want easy money so they would take those gigs. As the "studios" became more removed from the actual production of "product", the idea that the people who create content (the writers, directors, technicians, and actors) should be compensated is becoming less apparent. The problem is that so many streaming services are using old content, recycling old TV shows (FRIENDS, GILMOUR GIRLS, et al) and they have not been paying residuals because the cycle of residual payments ended with the last times that those shows were in syndication (i.e., on television or cable stations). This really IS a situation of greed (on behalf of the executives) as opposed to any possible compensation for creatives. The question really is: how can the AMPTP (which is allowing the streaming services to lead in the negotiations) not recognize that the creatives deserve adequate compensation? BTW i've worked in movies for over 50 years, in many capacities in terms of "independent" productions, and i've NEVER seen such a horrendous impasse!

You did a wonderful job on this. Once all this is over I hope we get to see more of you! It would be a shame to see you and other talented people leave the industry because they can't make a living. Stay strong, don't give up!

🚨 I'm sadly not surprised they're being greedy like this but it still hurts. I'm not at all involved in this but it's still heartbreaking to see people's talents and worth being under appreciated. Especially when the money's there, they're just feeding it to people who don't need it. I which these industries were more humane. My jaw literally dropped when I saw the article that said they planned on waiting it out and letting people starve/lose their homes. I don't even know how you come back from a comment like that.
