Robert Townsend said he and Keenan Ivory Waynes wrote down all their experiences trying to break into Hollywood. They wrote a script funded it themselves. They brought it to the studio to get it distributed. The head of the studio said he didn't get it, but he knew that the audience would love it, so they distributed it.

You should check out the 1988 comedy I'm Gonna Git You Sucka starring Keenan Ivory Wayans (who also directed it) and his brother Damon. When you get around to that one, watch to the end because there is an end credit scene.

Robert Townsend is definitely an underappreciated filmmaker to this day. He has a foundation to help unsigned filmmakers. He directed a bunch of movies in the 90's and 2000s. He still directs and produces films and shows sporadically nowadays. Fun Fact: That Eddie Murphy skit came about because Robert auditioned for SNL and got rejected for Eddie Murphy. BUT they are close friends IRL, Townsend directed Eddie's standup special "Raw (1987)" right after Eddie saw the screening of this movie.

Robert Townsend had a couple sketch comedy specials on HBO. He worked with a lot of the same actors in this movie. It was called Rober Tondsend's Partners in Crime.

I'm actually quite shocked, not only have a not seen this movie, I don't think I've ever heard of it. And I mean, I grew up around the time this came out, and I basically saw every 70's and 80's comedy I could get my hands on, and I have yet to encounter a reaction to a comedy from that era I had not seen, until now. It's great!

Yes!!! I love the reaction from you both this time, since neither of you have seen this. This was definitely a precursor to "In Living Color" with the Wayans, particularly Keenan, involved with the skits. Fun fact: Robert Townsend maxed out his credit cards to make this movie to start out. He's been a bit actor for awhile, but this was his big break in Hollywood with his best friend, singer Patrice Rushen providing the score. A lot of great actors in this one pretty much starting out early in their careers. I wonder if the movie "I'm Gonna Git You Sucka" is on your list, because that is a great follow up to this one

Hollywood Shuffle is one of the all time great independent films ever made. Robert Townsend is a comedy genius, and he surrounded himself with fantastic collaborators. When you get a chance, watch Mr. Townsend’s comedy special Partners in Crime. Great comedians and great sketches too.

This movie was made by Robert Townsend off of multiple credit cards when no one would produce it or put money down. He put it all together. THAT plus how this movie turned out is why this movie was an ultimate success in all ways.

I really appreciate your channel for reviewing this movie. It's a parody of what, unfortunately a lot of Black actors experience. I've heard of casting calls that say "only looking for actresses lighter than Janet Jackson", and a few actors I know who are as bougie and sheltered as they come, being cast as drug dealers despite auditioning for other parts. Sometimes you have to laugh to keep from crying. That's why I love this film.

I love it when I see reactions to movies that aren't watched by EVERY OTHER REACTOR. You can only watch a reaction to Star Wars and Back to the Future so many times. I saw this when it was released. It got a lot of press due to Townsend financing it himself. The line "I ain't be gottin' no weapon" went into regular rotation with me and my friends. Now you absolutely have to watch I'm Gonna Git You Sucka. While I'm here let me suggest the Kurt Russell movie Used Cars. It's one of my favorite comedies of all time.

As an African American, I'm thrilled that you picked this movie to watch, comment on etc..and I mean that sincerely; we as a diverse society should be able to laugh at one another's cultural humor, presented stereotypes etc. I mean, it is what it is; cultures have some funny shit to laugh at. I was watching ya'll's reactions intensely cuz it seemed, you laughed, but yet you felt bad for laughing, but you couldn't help yourselves...THAT was funny to me. And I love the Matthew snort, and how HE repeated the line, "Hos got to eat too". Keep up the good work, ya'll.

If you liked this one you really really need to see I'm Gonna Get You Sucka, one of the funniest parody movies ever made!!! If I remember correctly Robert Townsend financed this movie by maxing out all of his credit cards. Fun Fact: Since Mathew brought up In living color and Emily brought up in the heat of the night. Anne-Marie Johnson was a cast member on both shows. She was only on the fifth and final season of In Living Color which is why Mathew may not have remembered her from that.

In the Street Pimps movie she DID pop out of her top for a second. They couldn't reshoot, because they didn't have the permits to be shooting on the street. So a lot of those scenes were done guerilla style; they kept watch to see when an area was clear of cops, hopped out and set everything up fast, and got the shot and ran like hell. Robert Townsend made a fair number of movies (he starred in Meteor Man, for one), but never received the recognition he deserved in my book.

Guys, not sure if either of you have ever seen the movie "Student Bodies", but it is a classic! It's a Slapstick Horror Movie. It makes fun of the 80s Slasher movie craze and it is a lot like Top Secret and Airplane in that the humor is utterly ridiculous! Hope you get tot watch that one soon!

That both technically was and wasn't a transformer. It was a VF-1 Valkyrie from Robotech/Macross. It's model was also sold as as Autobot Jetfire. However then Hasbro was threatened with a lawsuit so they retired the figure early.

Just love this movie! Saw it in the theater and I don't know how many times on video. It was on heavy rotation in my home in the 80's. Elvis Mitchell was writing for the Detroit Free Press in the 80's and his rave review got my butt in the theater. Robert Townsend made a sweet melodrama too, called The Five Heartbeats - about some musicians. Townsend is also an excellent interviewee. He is as funny and sharp as you'd expect. Oh, see, I didn't know you were going here. Hollywood Shuffle is a HOOD Classic!!! Quotables for DAYS!!!! "WHEEEEEERE'S MY BXTCHES!!!!!!", "HOES GOTTA EAT TOO!!!". You and one other channel are the only ones to tackle this movies, everyone else is scared cause of metrics. There are many more classics like this out there. Here are a few you should see. "Keenan Ivory Wayans in "I'm Gonna Git You Sucka" (Chefs Kiss!!!) "House Party" (Sums up the black experience, lol) and some more Robert Townsend movies are of course, "Meteor Man", and "The Five Heartbeats to name a couple...
