Hollywood SHUTDOWN: actors go on strike

The actors union SAG-AFTRA is now on strike, joining an ongoing walkout by Hollywood writers and effectively shutting down the industry in its first double strike in 63 years. The joint walkout by actors is expected to shut down nearly all remaining filming. Production on many shows and movies has already ground to a halt since the writers strike began in early May. A double strike with writers is nearly unprecedented. They have only picketed simultaneously once: in 1960, when the Screen Actors Guild was led by Ronald Reagan. #writersstrike #sagaftrastrike #shorts

Writers are striking because they don’t want to work “Gig to Gig”, showcasing how completely removed from the production working class they really are. Actors have some real issues, but SAG is a poorly managed organization that is extremely difficult for lower budget productions to work with and expensive and elitist for actors to gain entrance and representation from. Neither Union showed any support for the I.A.T.S.E. membership who wanted to strike in 2021 over a return to long long hours and 10 year old pay rates. Radio silence in fact. The DGA may represent “Directors” but most of its membership are set managers who work “on the ground” with production crews. That Union re-negotiates its contracts every 3 years and obtained all their goals plus a Covid bump for their membership, but clearly they were mindful of keeping their co-production workers in a job. Something that the WGA and SAG waves off like an annoying knat.

Actors couldn't strike until their contract was up. Contracts prevent union strikes by members for a set number of years. The contracts for WGA, SAG-AFTRA, & DGA all end within a few months of each other (intentionally, for historical moments like this). DGA sold out; SAG-AFTRA held the line and struck as soon as they legally could. Oppenheimer actors literally got permission *during* the premiere, and immediately turned and walked out.
