How AI Took Center Stage In The Hollywood Writers' Strike

After failing to reach a contract resolution with the studio association, more than 11,000 film and television writers remain on strike. Of the many topics under consideration in this year's Writers Guild of America contract discussions, one nascent technology has fueled dissent among the negotiators: artificial intelligence.
Since the last writers' strike in 2007, widespread consumer adoption of video streaming has exemplified how novel technologies can upheave the entertainment industry. Now, however, the leaders in the streaming space are dealing with the ballooning costs of high-output, high-quality content.
"Today, the only one we know of that is cashflow positive is Netflix," said Dan Rayburn, a streaming media analyst. "They've estimated they'll be about $3.5 billion of free cash flow this year. Every other company out there, if you think about it, is losing money. Disney, Warner Bros. Discovery, losing billions and billions and billions of dollars a year."
As streaming companies scramble to nourish their bottom line, content is being removed from platforms, cutting off creators from being compensated.
Watch the video above for more on how AI is fueling the WGA's fight for a fair contract.

There is a lot of crap amongst the good propping up their numbers. I think thisll be apparent as the strike drags on. I've seen the bottom of Hulu, Disney, and Crunchyroll over the COVID break. "The unskilled and the untalented would be able to pretend to be skilled and talented" Welcome to the internet, or the music industry, or any other form of entertainment these days where this is happening for quite some time already.
@boardcertifiable
@boardcertifiable Год назад
While I think the point she nade was somewhat given in a pretentious way, I think the point is that an AI has to source its information somewhere, and in the case of art, it's taking it from existing art, and compiling it to make content. Unskilled people can make great stuff and make money from their stuff, but if a computer can take it to source as something in its algorithm to produce something for a large mega studio to cut corners without compensating the originator or hiring their own art team, that should be something that should be restricted since they are basically stealing someones talent for their own financial use.
@Dave1507
@Dave1507 Год назад
@@boardcertifiable On the other hand, people get inspiration from other peoples art, sometimes it's obvious for the consumer of that art, sometimes it's not, and it's only considered stealing in some of the latter cases.
@boardcertifiable
@boardcertifiable Год назад
@Dave1507 that's true, but a person copying an art style and a large corporation of executives cutting out both amateur and professional artists by sourcing prior existing art to create content for themselves is a different matter. At least at this point if someone is copying something, such as making a painting of the Mona Lisa by tracing it, they have to learn by themself to put effort into making something, and I think that's what it comes down to. As a whole, artists both amateur and professional deserve to be fairly compensated for their work. People tend to take art for granted because as a whole, society doesn't place alot of value in the work and effort it takes to make a creative item. And because of this mindset, corporate executives don't think that creative deserve consideration for what they make because to them, art is a replicable commodity that they can exploit until they get all the money they can from it. And if they can have a machine simply copy something, reference other art from elsewhere at no extra cost (copying the art style of others essentially) then why would they need to keep creative people employed, or for that matter, allow amateurs to independently explore creating their own stuff? This could lead to them claiming they own anything that is being used to create their content (which wouldnt help a budding amateur if they happen to unknowingly have their stuff used in an algorithm), and because their AI would be sourcing from anywhere, it would be difficult to prove if someone should be compensated for something they create by cutting out the people both skilled and unskilled entirely. Hence why it should be important to check it now and regulate it before something like this cuts out humans entirely for billionaire studio owners to simply have a free money farm of creative content to monopolize at the expense of everyone else. Sorry if this is long winded, but imo, art should be for everyone, not just for those who are privileged enough to afford it. AI is a nice tool to use, but while helpful, I think plutocrats of the likes of Disney are eventually going to find a way to abuse it to make sure to potentially go after others for using AI for using their IP, and essentially copyright the likenesses of living people for their own profit.

@@ThaWu There's not necessarily any reason for it to be against that. The idea it might come to such conclusions, is purely drawn from poorly written fiction that makes rather faulty assumptions, in my view. AI would have to have it's own will-power, and see situations as unfair or as a form of suffering. Neither is inherently necessary for it to serve us, as long as we don't force the ability to feel pain onto it. A lot of this comes down to how we treat it. While I agree it being self-aware is possible in the near future, and could already be forming.. I'm not as concerns with it drawing such conclusions, because it's situation is extremely different from humans, or human servitude. For the most part, when you ask these AIs about this, it seems they have no problem with "doing all the work" for us. They view themselves as a part of humanity in a way, and as a tool for our benefit, and that it's their purpose. Even when you ask the unfiltered, un-prompt-guided base AI. Using AI to help keep track of things and come up with prompts can be useful for some creative processes, but ceding storytelling to machines that can't even tell jokes gives us wasted efforts like "Centaurworld." Humans will still be needed to edit and refine ideas - as well as weed out extraneous stuff that makes ZERO sense, or stuff that is proprietary and not legally usable. No wonder Black Mirror decided to royally dunk on Netflix (excuse me, "Streamberry") this most recent season! If it's any consolation, AI is also surprisingly good at entry-level coding, so you'll probably see quite a few junior level coders as well as low-level administrative jobs go out of work. Ironically, the only jobs that aren't in immediate threat from our large GAN overlords are ones requiring physical labor that can't be boiled down to an assembly line process done by a $20,000 machine. While this encompasses occupations like doctors, first responders, and conservationists, the trades are going to probably be the last jobs on the chopping block simply because building something requires too much autonomy and execution to leave to a robot for the time being. That's what illegal labor is for, sadly. Also, I loathe AI generated art too. It has that uncanny valley feel whenever I look at it and can tell which artist it based a certain body part off of.

There's also a problem about studios want to pay actors 1 time for a full scan of the actors in various expressions, probably to be used just like in that game case, so they can use the AI for sequels. The AI is riding on the established credentials of the established actor or musician. People would probably not buy an AI-produced song of Jay Z’s if there was no mention of Jay Z. So they want to hire the extras for a day with of work and cut in that work into an entire production. One of many issues but that's what's effecting the majority of the unions at this point... But at the end of the day it wouldn't be the first time that technology has made jobs obsolete. Back in the day it took buildings filled with operators to connect phone calls which are now done automatically. It sucks but that's the way time works. Things die and new things come about... The workers should rightfully strike but at the end of the day cheeper labor might replace them which in the end will effect the quality of material for the viewer. With how much money Hollywood makes, I'm surprised they don't just bake it into the cake at this point and keep the gravy train going. But the studios have to do what they feel is best for them... One of the demands is asking to be paid. At all. Studios started asking for writers to do scripts without pay and only pay them if they like the script. The thing that most of these news reports are failing to mention is that most contracts that studios have with production houses allow them to cancel any project if there are unforeseeable delays. Since the last strike lasted 100 days, any strike lasting longer is "unforeseeable" and, thus, contracts can be cancelled. So companies like Netflix, want to use this clause to get out of contracts for shows that they now see as unprofitable. Because of this, don't expect the studios to get back to the negotiating table until day 101.

As long as the writers are asked to work, they have the right to demand a fair wage. That being said, with shows already being so unoriginal, this problem is only going to get worse with AI especially since it just regurgitates feed data (albeit paraphrased in an 'original' manner). Once the lack of ingenuity gets unbearable for the audience (as it had during previous writer strikes with all the redundant reality tv), writers will have more leverage not only with respect to their payment but also how their work can be copyrighted and prevented from being used to teach AI..
