The two biggest surprises for everyone is that the song starts off with Tim, usually known as Mr. Bass, singing the lead tenor part and sounding good and then Chance singing bass, which he used to do in his previous group. The fact is that Tim, Austin and Rob all sing in the same range as Cam, the original singer of the song. This song is saved for reactors because of Tim's unexpected range.
Tim's range is no surprise any more as most reactors hear songs friom his solo album and other HF songs like Snow Globe, where he sings tenor, long before they react to Mayday!
Red, have you checked out The A-Capella group."Voctive" yet? Them doing " A Disney Princess Medley" is a good one to start with. I think you will enjoy it. Have a Great Day.
The original song was by a woman named "Cam" - they sing it in the same key. For more surprises you need to watch "Mayday Live" & "9-5 Beatboxing Breakdown". They're all vocal chameleons - Tim has a 5+ octave range; Tim & Chance trade off singing bass; Austin & Rob do so with tenor & Adam has a great range and singing voice. Thanks for playing this & your comments.
You're right about Rob doing heavy and lite. Tim sang tenor in one of his previous vocal groups and Chance sang bass for his previous vocal group. They both have incredible range. If you want to hear an instrumental interlude check out Home Free's Can't Stop the Feeling.
Red - Most reactors reach "Mayday" without a full appreciation of Tim's upper range and the fact that Chance would be an excellent bass in any other group. Due to all the Christmas song reactions, you weren't quite as shocked to hear Tim (a basso profondo) take the lead and do it in the same key as the original soprano singer, Cam. (BTW, if you didn't get a chance to hear her version, it will give you an even BETTER appreciation of HF's performance! Cam's original is here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-eRrCMEXPjWo.html ) This one is among their all-time best!!! ------ There are still MANY MORE great songs in HF's catalog...and they keep adding great new stuff. As you try to spread out your HF reactions (avoiding the urge to binge out), you might want to pencil in "American Pie" ( ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9RlTZdYXcKg.html ) for February 3. This is a joint performance with the original artist, Don McLean. They recorded this in 2021 (during COVID lockdown) to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the song...and released it on February 3, the day the music died.
Cam is an alto not a soprano. Her vocal range is almost the same as a male tenor. Soprano: C4 to A5 Mezzo-soprano: A3 to F#5 Alto: G3 to E5 (and contralto as F3-D5) Tenor: roughly C3 to A4 Baritone: A2 to F4 Bass: F2 to E4
You weren't supposed to know Tim Foust could sing high, but you did some of his solo stuff and ruined that surprise. But at least you hadn't heard Chance go this low before. The real reason we always tell reactors to wait for Mayday is so they are shocked by Tim singing tenor 😊
One of my favorites of HF, is "Ain't Going Down" till yhe sun comes up. For some reason it was released on Facebook so it often gets ignored and may be harder to track down, BUT it's worth it in my opinion!
Rob is a vocal chameleon - he doesn't have the octave range of Tim but he can sing beautifully in such a range of styles. And Chance is vocal velvet. Adam Rupps percussion on this one is perfect. And then there's Tim the tenor and Austin - how can you resist them?
Listen close to the closing lines. Rob is singing the counter-melody to Austin’s chorus, there’s a high harmony over Rob. That’s our favorite bass, Tim. 😊
Home Fries need to stop with the May Day nonsense now. Once upon a time Tim singing tenor was a surprise but by now everyone has heard Tim sing tenor. There are other songs where Tim sings higher especially on his solo album Pieces of Me. Also, Chance doing bass is no longer a big deal. He does bass on many songs with Tim so no one is surprised.
It all depends on whether you listen to their stuff in chronological order. If you listen to the new stuff, Mayday is less of a surprise. But it caught many of us off guard, when we came to know them through “The Sing Off” and the songs they released following that.
I thoroughly enjoy watching your facial expressions and hearing your commentary when you are reacting to these vids. Thank you for sharing a little bit of yourself with all of us!!! Don't forget to listen to "Helplessly Hoping" by these phenoms!!! I also ran up on another beautiful redhead named Lauren Alred who sings "Never Enough". She is the voice you hear in the movie = the actor is lip singing. You will not be disappointed if you listen to everything she sings!!!!!!!
Try Tim and Peter Hollens singing "Misty Mountains". Then come back to "Mayday" and just watch Tim do the 1st verse. It's like jumping from a sauna to an icebath and back again. Thanks.
As usual I loved your reaction. This cover was a little older, before Tim had come out with his solo doo wop covers where he showed off his high range and falsetto voice. That is why the experienced Home Fries say wait until you are familiar with the guys and their "normal" ranges. That way you know Tim is the BASS guy. This song was originally written and performed by a female country singer, Cam. Tim, Austin and Rob all come in singing in the same key as the female singer, Cam. Especially with Tim leading off in that high register and most people not yet exposed to his high range it delivers the surprise impact that was intended. Then Chance hitting that deep bass note that is down in Tim's space is the double whammy. Chance was the bass singer in another group before Home Free snagged him up and he is able to cover the bass harmony when Tim is singing lead. For a really deep Tim song check out Peter Hollens Misty Mountains, featuring Tim Faust. And for a good sample Of Chance's singing check out Wayfaring Stranger with The Hound and the Fox. Beautiful folksy ballad. And then of course there is Chance's original Sea Shanty, "Skull and Bones", which I have already recommended. We say they cover all genres of music, but your description as musical chameleons is just spot on, loved it. Looking forward to what ever Home Free song you cover next.
I think because you reacted to Snow Globe, you saw Tim sing in a high tenor, so you were not surprised with Tim's high tenor intro in this, but quite surprised by Chance's bass note. However, you are the very first reactor I have seen to notice and mention Rob's range from a low full tenor operatic voice to a high alto range in this one. Good catch! You really need to see Rob perform in their cover of End of the Road and the unbelievable riffs he does in that one.
Great vocals from the guys 👍I cannot wait to hear Avi Kaplan on your channel 😀try to contain your excitement on your inter webs area !! Change on the rise should tug at your heart strings in the best way I promise💕🤣🙏
Red, I am so glad that you discovered Home Free (because of your reactor friends) and I think we all are glad the we discovered you. Your reactions are refreshing and fun for all of the Home Fries tuning in. I am an old guy who seems to appreciate the same kind of music s you. With that said, there not a single video of the plethora that they have made that you can go wrong. I do have a few favorites and I think you might like them too. So, so many. Travelin Soldier, Listen to the Music, Fishin' in the Dark/Boondocks, Delta Dawn, Unchained Melody, Bless the Broken Road, End of the Road, Hillbilly Bone, Good Ol' Boy Goodtime, Aint. Goin. Does till the Sun Comes Up, Thinking Out Loud/Let's Get It On, and then a Tim and Austin song...My Maria!!!!! Oh and so many more. Home Free will keep you busy (and entertained) for some time. And we will be entertained you reacting to them. Wonderful job, Young Lady!!!!1
@redheadedneighbor Red, I'd love to watch you chair-dance with "Hillbilly Bone". I think it was from about 7 years ago, just after Chance joined the group. Guarantee you can't sit still with it.
Chance's rich full warm rounded bass is featured in their cover of I Can't Outrun You (Trace Adkins), a beautiful song led by Chance throughout. He also directed the video.
Great reaction, as usual. The range on evrymember of this group has always impressed. But I also love the songs that just hit with pure joy. If I could suggest the guys covers of "Love Train" and "When will I be Loved" as they both can brighten any rainy or snowy day! #homefree
This song is one of my favorites. We usually ask reactors to wait to react to this song till they are familiar with the individual members. Then they are surprised at hearing the switch ups in the voices. Tim who is known for his bass can sing in a beautiful higher tenor voice along with Austin & Rob. And Chance can hit the lower bass notes when needed. Adam did a fabulous job as always with his vocal percussion. The original song is sung by a woman Cam, so they sung it in a higher key to match the original range.
Great reaction, Red! Lots of reactors are shocked when hearing Tim sing lead tenor in this song. You have already heard his range so it was really not a surprise for you. Chance coming in with the lows is another shock foe some people. All in all this is a fantastic piece of music by a group of fantastic singers. Have you ever listened to Alison Krauss and Union Station?
I was expecting this one soon! You haven’t taken the route most reactors take so you’ve heard Tim up high already so that wasn’t a surprise but you got to see how versatile this group really is! It’s amazing Tim singing the 1st verse and the other two tenors also in the same key as Cam did it in but cam is a female! Really enjoyed watching this, great job. I think Rob’s voice is extremely flexible. You’ll have to check out Boys to Men cover End of the Road. Really shows what Rob can do! Your friend, low bass Kenneth
Red - Tim's range is incredible, and most aspiring Home Fries are shocked to see him take the lead and sing this in the same key as Cam, a soprano!! (I hope you take the time to listen to her original. That will add to your amazement at HF's accomplishment. Cam's original is here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-eRrCMEXPjWo.html ) Chance would be a great bass in any other group, but most often we hear his baritone range. --- As you try to resist the urge to binge out on HF's LARGE catalog, you might want to pencil in "American Pie" ( ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9RlTZdYXcKg.html ) for February 3. This was a collaboration with the original artist, Don McLean, to celebrate the song's 50th anniversary. They released it on February 3 -- the day the music died.
I know you will be surprised. We all were the first time we saw this one. I know you are ready now, though. You know the guys well enough. Tim sings tenor throughout this song, along with Rob and Austin, though that is usually their territory.
The big surprise is Tim going high up in his range. Most people are not expecting tim to use his tenor voice everyone more or less probably waiting for tim to hit the really low notes but chance covers those in this song. Great reaction 👍 Also chance dropping the bass. Those are reasons why homefries say to wait because if you just always think the guys sing the same way all the time they like to change it up.
I love these guys so much and it isnt a rabbit hole it is a TRex hole and you are just starting my dear. So many more songs and you have only scratched the surface with their silly stuff. One of my favorite vidoe reactions from you was Grandma. To see you laugh that way gave this Texas boy such joy❤🧡💛#redheadedneighbor #reaction #homefree #homefry #homefreereaction
One of my favorites. So good. They look as pretty as they sound in this one. Thanks for the Home Free reactions. ( there is a "From the Vault " behind the scenes video for this one that is great to watch)
I know hun your over whelmed with suggestions. But here's another.😊 The song was done originally by U2. Haven't found what im looking for. Featuring Peter Collins. They get there patrons singing in this. It's a good feeling song.👍👍 I think you'd really enjoy it. I think Austins cat makes a cameo in it.🐱
I pretty much knew you’d be ready for Tim’s higher range since you reacted to one of his solo covers. What I figured would surprise you was Rob’s vocals (as you said after reacting to the opera song and his rich and lower tones), and Chance’s low note he dropped. I was surprised you didn’t say anything, or realize that Tim was singing vocals and not bass and you would realize that Chance held down the bass throughout the song, and very well, indeed! I would love to see you react to a couple of songs where Rob and/or Chance have/exchange lead vocals. (One of my favorite things) One song is where Rob and Austin lead, and Rob really shows of his vocals (especially towards the end) is their cover of “End of the Road”. The other is a Rob/Chance switch off on Keith Urban’s cover of “Blue Ain’t Your Color”. It’s a very special video because there is some really cool choreography (which Home Free is normally not known for.). Anyway, I thoroughly enjoyed your reaction to this one! We Home Fries love reactor’s reactions to this one, mostly because they’ve not been exposed to Tim’s full range prior to seeing this video!
So glad you got to see this. When it first dropped, Adam was still relatively new and no one expected him to drop down to that register. Likewise, Tim's solo stuff wasn't out yet and all most ppl knew of him was how Flippin deep he sang. If you watch some other rxns (older ones), to a person, EVERYONE paused 3 notes in bc they thought that couldn't possibly be him. You had the advantage of hearing his range already, but when it first came out, that was mind-blowing. The final piece of the puzzle is that this is by Cam, a powerful feminine singer, and tge guys kept it in the SAME KEY instead of dropping it down a bit for male voices. Really impressive. Now that Tim & Chance's ranges are well documented, the "you're not ready for Mayday" is kind of more tongue-in-cheek for the Home Fries... almost a running gag. I will say this is a great opportunity for you to begin exploring some older songs. "End of the Road" and the "Butts Remix" are absolute show-stoppers. Great rxn, RHN!
Well --- Typically!!! This comes before Snow Globe ... or this leads into Snow Globe ...... buutttttt Surprise!!!! Reasons, reasons, reasons. This was a 1st (for us) to have Tim lead as Tenor and sustained too ---- but, put out as Audio Only, so everyone was "Who is that?" Cause ya had the bass goin' on with Chance and he goin' low - (ummm, where it was evident but revealed with the Vid. ... Everyone!!! Then came the video that blew everyone away. Snow Globe came later. But anyway -- reason why Mayday is so significant! Be Safe
Tim doing T1 or T2 instead of bass line. Both Rob and Austin doing their upper tenor thing. Chance doing the bass line. And of course Adam doing his drum thing. This was sung in the same key as Cam (female) sang the original.
It seems to me that all the guys have improved their skills, making themselves more relevant. I've loved their music from the beginning, yet like fine wine they've only gotten richer in their flavorful harmony.
What people miss here is Chance and his bass. Go back and lost to Man of Constant Sorrow. He's the deeper bass before Tim and when Tim does his solo. Tim doesn't go deeper, as some think. It's Chance! Listen to their voices. They're very distinct. Now, please, please do "Butts Medley!" Come on guys, she's got to do this one. She be laughing so hard!! HF Butts Medley next! I love your reactions Red!
Most of even the home fries met Tim as the deep base who shocked them but didn’t know his huge range until he started his side projects. So they were shocked by his falsetto. You however became his fan after hearing his higher works and it was not a shock to you when he started off way up there. You were not shocked like them and that’s what the warnings were all about. Kindofa disappointment that your mouth didn’t drop immediately as you were looking for a surprise somewhere during the song. That’s okay, I love to watch you anyway ‘cause your beauty is in your smile, your voice, your accent, your hair, did I say your smile, and I could go on but some would say i was disrespectful and that’s what we want to stay away from, but that’s fun to watch, too.
This is not my favorite song, since I would hope to never share it with someone I was in a relationship with. But, yes, wow. These guys are remarkable. I'd bet they could sing the McDonald's menu and make it sound absolutely delicious. This is not out daddy's acapella group. Thanks for another great reaction video.
The thing about home free is their cover songs are better than the original. If you like the beat boxing you need to listen to ring of fire it’s a Johnny cash song covered by home free
Thanks for doing this cover! Wished I would have seen this when you first posted it. Another beautiful reaction from a beautiful lady. Love all your reactions to HOME FREE!!!
Once, I opened two browser tabs, loaded both versions (original & HF), and then played with start/stop until they sort of synced up. HF is right on the same key as Cam!
If you haven't watched and listened to Adam Rupp vocal drum solo 2015 is my favorite one. I had the honor of listening to him do this live in concert in 2022 and Wow is all i can say.
The surprise was Tim singing high (usually the super low bass guy) he was a 3rd tenor in this song and Chance sang Bass, which is what he normally does the background bass when Tim is singing a solo, but this made it obvious about how versatile their voices are too because they each got their solo bits with their different voice range.
It's not fair to those of us with under a 3 octave range that Tim can sing 2 octaves lower than I can and then sing up in the stratosphere as well. Note: I know he's put a ton of work into it and it doesn't just happen. Then to hear Austin flip from chest to mix to head to falsetto so effortlessly. It's not fair, but it's why I love these guys. They have put in the work to master their craft and it shows!
This is so awesome! The first time I heard this I about fell off my chair. Between Tim and Chance switching roles and all the beautiful harmonies and beat boxing, it was amazing. Rob's buttery voice and Austin's high pitch made me melt! By the way Tim has a five-octave range. Absolutely love your reaction!
I think the biggest potential surprise was ruined since Ms Red here had already heard Tim's range when she reacted to his cover of *Why Do Fools Fall In Love.* So, in other words... she cheated! :D Thanks for your reaction and your content Ms Red! *HUGS*
Yeah, there's a sweet spot for "Mayday." Listen too early and you miss the switch-up, and if you listen too late, the element of surprise is gone. Even without the surprise, this is a great performance!
Howdy Red. Thank you so much for another wonderful reaction to Home Free. For 50 years my all-time favorite band was The Moody Blues, then back in 2020 I discovered Home Free and they became my number one. And as others have said, the main reason reactors are told to wait on listening to Mayday is due to Tim taking the lead high tenor since it is so different from his usual sub-basement level bass. I'm sure that if Tim ever retired or left Home Free, Chance is more than capable of taking over the bass, since he already does it when Tim shows off his high range, lol. I personally would love for you ro react/listen to Tim's solo "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow / Stay". The second half being Tim's homage to the 1963 version by the Four Seasons.
The next steps on your Home Free journey: Helplessly Hoping (amazing pure harmonies) and their One Voice collaboration with Billy Gilman (a maximum tear jerker).
1. I look forward to your reactions. 2. This cover shows Home Frees extreme versatility vocally and genre wise. Loved your reaction but not unexpected!
I still regularly catch myself thinking about the drummer or the bass player.... Chameleon is exactly the word I was going to use. They know their instrument so well, they can get it to do almost anything. Until recently, most reactors had not seen Tim's do-wop stuff to get used to his upper range, so the first few notes usually brings a look of dumbfounded confusion. But in addition to Tim, you get Chance's beautiful bass and as you pointed out, yet another of Rob's voices. That they did this in the same key as Cam did just adds one more layer of 'wow'. And you are welcome. Home Fries love to introduce people to HF because we are fairly certain they will love HF as much as we do.
They really are so talented. Most of the stuff I've seen from them is really not my 'thing' musically but they've all been immensely enjoyable simply by how they perform them.
The shocking part of this song was Tim singing high. Then Chance coming out with his beautiful heavy bass line. I really enjoyed watching your reaction to this song.
Most reactors are immediately amazed at Tim singing the lead tenor part. Having seen Tim in “Will You Still Love Me/Stay” it is no longer a surprise that he has a 5 octave range. Beautiful song. For context I recommend that you listen to the Cam version. That is an amazing song too! It’s nice to see how different artists do a cover.
Stupendiously good. Sorry if I added a vowel too many. English isn't my native tongue. Anywho, WAUW! There's nothing that these guys can't pull off. Except death metal metal in any form, I guess. Poor Adam. He'd have to speed the fuck up. 👻
Such wonderful versatility of the guys! I love that they share the lead all the while backed by the ever talented Adam Rupp’s beat boxing. Love this group. Forever a Home Fry! Thanks for the reaction Red!
If this song hit to spot, before too long react to Boyz to Men's "End of the Road". The first song I heard Home Free do was "Moonshine" ... had to scratch that who in TARNATION is that? itch
