My favorite thing about Andrew, besides seeming like a really cool dude, is how decisive he is about his setup. One pair of speakers, one minimal console, everything hard-wired... and of course his taste in gear and instruments is really refreshing. One thing I didn't see - EQs for tracking!

These kinds of setups are more interesting and inspiring than the generic setups that much bigger studios have to have, in that they need to cater to every producer and engineer that comes through. It's good to see examples of studios that are highly customized to the needs of the particular user.

Warren, did you mention "The Manor" (Oxfordshire) up front? I believe that closed down and became a residence many years ago. i was there for a week in 86 or7. Mark Wallis was house engineer at the time. He'd start the day by cranking out Under a raging Moon and Running up that hill in the control room. I liked the stone drum room.

Wonderful and inspiring! On the technical side of things, I'd love more detail on Mr Wells' M.O. regarding the stems and hardware settings on mixdown. I think a lot of us face this issue where we bus things like kick, snare, drums, bass and guitars out to a couple of key pieces of gear that we try to keep the same settings on for full recallability. Maybe even a topic for a video, looking at different hybrid workflows? Thanks for the great content! 👍

Warren you mentioned that someone told you that there was a 47 used on a Stevie wonder song on "Songs in the Key of Life" however, I was under the impression that whole album was an RE-20.... am I mistaken there? Thanks for any insight you can give...
@Producelikeapro
@Producelikeapro 2 года назад
I was at the Record Plant in Sausalito where some of the album was recorded as well as Crystal of course. So we got to use their 47’s, although we ended up with our 48 as it was in better condition. Here is a quote for clarification for you:- Wonder used an Electro-Voice RE20 microphone to record his voice for upbeat songs such as "I Wish". A variety of microphones were used for other songs.

Is he using that thing just for the sake of nostalgia or does is actually do something special to color the sound. I don't get it. Please explain. It is beautiful for sure. I guess he set up a studio to his ear and his likes as far as touchy-feely. An artist for sure. Warren, don't you want to work with many of the guys that you interview? Don't you want to pick their brains to learn the best stuff that each one can show you. This guy seems mystify you as if you are scratching your head because of how out there his workflow is. He goes with his precise likes.
@Producelikeapro
@Producelikeapro 2 года назад
Hi Perry, thanks for your question. I'm definitely not mystified at all! Haha Seems quite straightforward to me! He uses the mic pres for tracking, just like any any other conventional console and then sums back through it just like people do nowadays for summing and then uses the graphic EQs on the console for his stereo bus. It's all very obvious, I'm not sure where your confusion lies with his workflow?
@AndrewWells20
@AndrewWells20 2 года назад
i would never buy and integrate anything into my setup for "nostalgia". every single pot and fader on the console is in use and eliminated buying racks of preamps, eqs, and summing. the console speeds up my worfklow.
@BBfanfun
@BBfanfun 3 года назад
not a conventional place to record ! are the limitations of the desk really worth it ? seems he could use racks of pre's for the same result , no ?
@Producelikeapro
@Producelikeapro 3 года назад
Maybe? If you have a rack of those pres, with faders and the EQs for the master etc. Plus all of the bussing and transformers etc, not really equivalent to some mic pres.
@BBfanfun
@BBfanfun 3 года назад
@@Producelikeapro i was considering the maintenance to keep that museum piece up & running vs practical modular pre's (& summing bus), etc. the potential down time would worry me a bit. But he also travels for long periods, so maybe that helps. still ; $ for a passion piece, can't be against that choice
@Producelikeapro
@Producelikeapro 3 года назад
@@BBfanfun I don't think there's been any downtime. Transistor consoles aren't particularly difficult to maintain, I've had an API 20 Channel, Neve 8058 and currently own an SSL and a CADAC console, plus Ampex mic pres etc, rarely have a tech here, maybe 3 years ago? Actually 5 years ago during an Ace Frehley album I had the Power Supply changed on the SSL. This kind of equipment is pretty resilient
