Just a side project, I've seen some people building their own motors and I decided to try my own, got some decent results with version 3, I will keep improving this version and also try another controller like the VESC one.

Congrats man, working on a similar version for a generator all 3d printed. cool to see it work.

Super cool! I am not sure what you are using for an electronic speed control, but I think a hobby grade brushless ESC or ebike ESC might work better especially at motor startup (load) which is why you need to start it by hand. I could be wrong but maybe worth looking into? Again super cool project! 🙂✌️

i am loving the build progression, can't wait to see it sensored and tested. also, was the stator made with ferromagnetic-infused material? if i'm not mistaken, stators that are ferromagnetic are better for its purpose
@OverbuiltByHenry
@OverbuiltByHenry 2 года назад
I considered two filaments for the stator, one PETG that can be magnetically detected and the other one is the ferromagnetic pla from formfutura. I need to do some changes to the stator and then I will try the magnetic filament.

Thanks! I didn't add the 2nd magnet plate yet, first I still need to finish machining. My original plan was to put it on an off road go kart. Maybe I will build the complete thing soon on the channel.

If you add Hall Effect sensors, it will start more reliably and operate better at high RPM, with load or no load. On your workbench it is no problem to start it manually but in many applications you simply can't get to the motor every time you want it to start turning. Hall Effect sensors are cheap and most better controllers have an input connection for them. Two rotor disks or two stator disks, either one, will make the motor run quieter and more efficiently, and have higher peak output power.

Versions after that one have hall sensors.

I see that you linked my channel in the description, so you may have already seen the thread I have linked in the description. But your stator looks a lot like mine when I started. Curious if you are continuing to work on this project and where you're at. I would love to collab, or just chat about ideas. I Love what you're making. keep it up

I’m currently working in V4, complete new design this time. Like what you said, I had read your ES thread and watched your videos, they were really inspirational because I had the idea in mind for a long time to build my own brushless motor for my kart projects. I definetely would love to do a collab and join strenghts about this and similar projects. You can hit me up on instagram: @overbuilt_by_henry

Thanks!! Not yet, I’m working on a eddy current brake dyno side by side with the newer version of the axial flux motor, not going as well as the motor build actually

How can we insulate magnet and rotor plate
@jpjay1584
@jpjay1584 Месяц назад
what is this winding pattern? I see they have triangle shapes, not overlapping. is his one "stronger" smoother??? also: do the 24 magnets (+24 small ones ) count as 24 magnets or 48? vs the poles?
@JF32304
@JF32304 Год назад
Nice work! On the next build use smaller diameter wire so you can get more turns in, this will increase magnetic flux. If you can, you should mark the placement of the magnets in the rotor so you can line them up correctly with one-another. But definitely use some smaller garage wire to get more turns. What is the current going in?
@OverbuiltByHenry
@OverbuiltByHenry Год назад
Thanks! Currently I’m also sizing V5, now doing calculations of almost everything. Current wire diameter is 0,85mm, yesterday I was testing this version and I was pulling 10 amps at 24 volts
@JF32304
@JF32304 Год назад
@@OverbuiltByHenry way too much current for such a small unit. Should be able to run this of a 1/4 of those amps. The fact that you're having to use such power means it's very inefficient.
@OverbuiltByHenry
@OverbuiltByHenry Год назад
@@JF32304 probably yes, I didn’t calculate anything on this version and the previous ones. I’m currently building a dyno to know some numbers. Hopefully next iteration will be more “reasonable”

On aliexpress maybe you can find something. I think that almost every motor manufacturer orders the custom magnets from China.

That is an induction motor, but I don't think that is an "axial flux" motor.
@MYXAHUHU
@MYXAHUHU Год назад
To begin with, it would be necessary to create a model in ansoft maxwell and see what sizes are needed for the air lock and yoke of the stator and rotor cores. You have a very small yoke cross section and therefore it will reduce the magnetic flux due to magnetic saturation. I've been doing this type of machine for 25 years
