I had a model older than this one that I love. My sister has difficulty with tools that are too heavy and she actually loved mine and found it easy to use ru-vid.comUgkx_rBCFuDW1zD6blTGhLkvAkxU657uR_lG . This is a newer model but was even lighter which she really appreciates. She enjoys it and I no longer have to go to her house to trim as she can handle it fine. Haven't used it enough to comment on the battery life but lithium batteries last longer than the old style. Being cordless makes it easy to trim the far edges of the property. The entire yard can be trimmed with one charged battery.

The metal line is very dangerous if it s broken and fly out with high speed,i tried once and a small part of the metal line went into my son's leg when he stood 2 metres away from me,i ran to him and pulled it out by hand, felt so lucky it did not go to the eyes,then never used the metal line again

Excellent creation! I wonder, have you tried using heat shrink instead of solder to prevent the strands of the cable from coming apart? I think the heat shrink is going to make the trimmer cable lighter than soldered cable.

I don't have a video on my adaptation. Nonetheless, here goes. I ran a solid piece of very thin stainless steed wire, similar to a bicycle spoke wire, but, out of stainless. Stainless steel will come right back to its shape during whacking. I ran it through the bobbin. I secured it with some little bolts that are hollow and have nuts. It is set. I fixed these little bolts and nuts to the exterior part of the hub, ran the wire through the bolt-nut assembly. I haven't used plastic trimmer wire in years. I do caution. Use pants and boots when operating this adaptation. You never know when the wire will shoot free and spike you or someone. Good luck.

The idea is good, but I believe that the unequal length of the steel wires added to the uneven weight of the welds, will eventually unbalance the rotating head and cause premature wear of the gears.

It does not work, if the cable touches the rocks or concrete, the cable's tiny wires will be apart and making problems.

I've often wondered if I could replace string trimmer line with cable on my own. This is an ingenious solution in my opinion. The nut and bolt to secure the cable was a great idea.

I use my old guitar strings. They already have the little brass barrels on the end so they will stay in the holes with a washer in front of it.No welding, no soldering.Just a little wrap of duct tape to prevent the string from pushing back in while handling the trimmer when it’s not running. Centrifugal force keeps the strings in place while the trimmer is spinning.

Interesting about the lead welding. I made a similar modification and at first it was bad ass but the wire started to fatigue and shoot out like bullets. I think I still have wire fragments in my legs.. I have a 10 year old Stihl FS 56, I found out that the fixcut 3-2 head replacement work’s best. I’m able to use .155 string and it’s super durable. I call my weed eater, the destroyer.. like from the 80s move Conan the destroyer..

Good I did something similar bot not metal line because is more difficult for a trimmer. Remember the trimmer had some power to work and maybe cause damage. And be careful with that.

Looks like a rugged string substitute! Try so-me cutting oil on your drill bit while drilling prevent the dulling and overheating of the bit which is evident (black cutting edges on drill bit). Without the oil, the drill becomes overheated and looses temper causing it to get even duller! Nice idea and video :)

Pozdrav!

Great idea with the soldier on the braided cable!! Stopping it from fraying is the biggest issue with " steel braided cable" line in that configuration. Good job man!! I REALLY WISH people would STOP trashing other peoples great ideas on RU-vid. Yes there are better ways to do everything. If you have a better idea , make a video or respectfully comment your modification. These people are making the videos to help others, they're not going on Shark Tank to have their ideas picked apart by others. Thanks for your creative work Doc D.S. !!

@LeChristEstRoi

Leaving plastic line pieces which take at least decades before decomposing all over the place is also a bad idea. When I realised I regularly litter my property with pounds of plastic (at least half a pound of trimmer line per year!) I felt pretty uneasy about that! I mostly use metal blades but in some places with lots of rocks plastic line is more convenient and does a better job...but I'm currently looking for something which can replace plastic...
