Millets are high in nutrition and their consumption has many health benefits.Ragi or finger millet is very good for people of all ages and good for bones as it is a good source of calcium. It is also rich in iron, fibre and specially good for diabetics. This recipe shows how to make a health drink using ragi powder. Children will like it and benefit from it too. The sugar free version of this drink is made by adding buttermilk and salt. This is extremely refreshing and cooling and has great health benefits.
Ingredients
(sweet Version)
Ragi powder 1 tsp (heaped).
Water 1 cup
Milk 1 cup
sugar /jaggery to taste
Badam/almond 10
Cardamom a few
Salt version
Ragi powder 1 Tsp
Water 1 cup
Buttermilk 1 cup
Salt to taste

For the salt version we grind a little Ginger, Dhania leaves and Ajwain and add. Gives a good flavour

more easier n quick way it to roast the raggi n than grind it to make sattu out of it for direct use in juicer to make sweet n spicy sattu. same way can use any millet sattu and also in salty/spicy version can add tadka or fine cut onion, fine cut/grade green chilly, black pepper power, cut curry leaves, rock salt, roasted zeera powder, green corriander n mint paste, etc. to increase taste

Dear Gita Ma'am, your culinary skills and dishes that you roll out with ease & warmth are highly commendable. Wish to add that the drink that you have prepared using ragi flour is certainly a health drink, but doesn't contain ragi malt. Malting is a germination based process, takes more time and steps to make, leading to higher nutritive value; thus is costlier.

Salty version is called as Ambili, right? I m from Konkan, and it's made there to beat the heat in summer. A pinch of roasted jeera powder and pink salt is added to enhance the taste. Bin Konkan it's called ambil.

We luv d sweet version mam...I use jaggery...But never used elaichi & badam...I'll try datnow...r My son used to have one big glass full of ragi porridge in d mornings before gng to school.. since he couldn't eat any solid breakfast early morning....It helped him by feeling full till d recess. In Mangalore during summer people even had raw ragi ground into a healthy drink after straining it....& Sweeting it....Thx for bringing old memories back... & Thx for d other unsweetened version
