More video of the starter working. Hopefully next year the plane will have its maiden flight
Sorry guys. A friend of mine informed me that if I film with the phone sideways it wouldn't have that blacked out parts on the side. I'll do another video tomorrow and upload it in landscape mode.

So nice! I have a Fa125 running with CDI with methanol. As its a risk to start it with a stick, this would be the best solution. Good video my friend

It just needs an alternator now! Great work.

I'm impressed, I love multi-cyl RC engines anyway and 4-strokes even more but this is really making the most of it. And how about that sound, particularly at idle it sure sounds like a plane engine! So that's a home-made on-board starter rig, that's pretty impressive. Much machining involved? Most of the bench test rigs on RU-vid are manual, the operator just moves a wire rod for throttle but you took the trouble to install your throttle servo onto the test rig, and with a tachometer. The remote choke is unique, I really like that. That's a good idea, you can test and improve the entire power system on land before you fly it in the model including choke and throttle servos. But I wonder, will you need it much? I exclusively run Saito but all mine are glow, haven't bought a "gasser" yet. The glow engines don't need choke once they're warm, would you be able to just start it on land and so long as it's warm, make your restarts without choke? I don't know if petrol (gas) is like that too, but anyway you don't have to worry about it with that great choke. It's all neatly done and works like a charm, you've got something good here and I'm inspired. Congrats. PS the choke must be on its own channel it it? Or is it programmed in against low throttle stick automatically somehow? If on its own channel do you use a switch, knob or slider control? I use a Hitec Aurora 9x, which I love (totally under-rated radio and for some reason much cheaper in Australia, great deal) and hope to use an OB starter some day, I'd probably assign one of the many available switches.

Bernard W Thanks for the compliment! The choke and throttle servo are mounted into the starter system.... and the choke will be on a switch And your right... besides the initial start it likely won't need choke if its warm....

If it's for a seaplane model on floats, on the water as you say in the video, it might save you a rescue by boat one day, if it's cold and windy. It's playing as I type, I love the sound.Have you tach'd how slow it'll idle? Sounds stable right down low too. If you write a log for that starter I'd love to see the link. Thanks for the video

Bernard W Ya i tached it at 950 rpm with the heavy three blade prop... acts allot like a flywheel lol.... with the lighter 2 blade I've gotten to 1050- 1100 rpm. Ya the video doesn't do the sound justice as in real life.. great little engine... try looking yoo the kolm engines if you like the sound those will blow you away... that's muy net engine investment if not a turbine first! Thanks for your interest!

Bernard W This engine I actually start allot like the full size super cub engines..... turn over with choke til ya see two props in the windscreen. Turn off choke....turn over again... wait fur two props then hit the ignition.... then it's alive..!.. lol... Yes the was a bit if cnc machining to do for the one way bearing to be ankle to mount it to the crankshaft... besides that the rest was cut on a laser cuter and modified parts for the starter motor.... took about three prototypes and a year and a half to get it right. .... but now I'd like to Fiquir out how to get a metal main gear. Stripped the plastic gear once when it loosened a bit...

Plenty of engineering workshops are set up for gear cutting, it's a bit of a special discipline of its own. Might not be super cheap but you'll be able to get what you need made up. Accurate teeth need to be machined not printed, pretty much. Anyway it's a great project, might have potential in it for bigger things too if you so desire. Appreciate your time talking it through to me and it's a great project. Cheers

Hello! Really nice starter! Could you tell me how is the disengaging mechanism? Did you use a "one way ball bearing"? Thanks!
@Adam_C_anadian
@Adam_C_anadian 2 года назад
Hello... sorry for the late reply... yes it's a one way bearing with a cnc machined piece that screws onto the engine crank shaft and acts as the propeller drive aswell... The bracket that holds the electric motor was also my 3rd design and was also cnc lazer cut out of titanium.... it doesn't have to be but I used it as I had access to it for free.... this starter setup took approx 1 year to perfect...I had issues with the main gear losing teeth from the torque needed to turn it but that seems to be ok now... later I'd like to make the main gear out of aluminum for extra strength... Thanks for the question!

Very nice, I need that on my twin 70cc gas engine, where can I get that, or do you have the plans to built it, really nice

Jos Haas look at the EME70 engine, that has a starter and is a reasonable cost.

HI, wonderful job. I need one as well. Can you help me with this? Did you build it, machine it yourself? do you have any details of where to get and what parts to use? Like motor etc. ? Thanks, Ray

Hello... it's a scratch build specifically designed to the saito fg57t engine..

I realize this video is 7 years old but I wanted to say that Aliexpress (Chinese Dealer) sells starters for DLE 20cc engines. However, they do not come with any instructions and so it's pretty hard to figure out how to get them installed and working. I have two of them and still struggling.
