The pH of regular soap is dangerous to the hair. You can make a bar shampoo with completely different ingredients than making soap. Hair needs pH 5. ❤

BEFORE COMMENTING something like "why are you protecting yourself from a chemical then rubbing it all over your body" After cooking the soap the lye is completely gone. IF YOU HAVE EVER USED SOAP! IT HAS LYE IN IT!!!!! There is no way to make soap without lye. But like I said you don’t have to worry about the lye hurting you because the lye is completely cooked away and none is present in the end result. If you see youtube videos title something like "how to make soap without lye" they are using melt and pour soap. they are taking soap that has already been made (with lye) melting it down and remolding it.

Also when a soap has fully saponified.. there is no.longer traces of lye in the soap because it has now turned to soap

Not all soap is made with lye, but all soap is made with a strong base that can burn your skin, haha. But thanks for this comment anyway. Great video btw.

@@AyanaSioux Reply... You cam NOT make soap without lye... no soap at all is made without lye.. Even melt and pour soap originally needed lye when it was firat manufactured.. Soap can not exist without Lye... ypu are welcome to google this to see foe yourself..

@@mcfamily5162 no, up you can make it with potassium hydroxide, which is what African black soap uses (true African black soap, not the crazy American brands) which makes a much softer soap, even after long curing periods.

There are a few things I like abt shampoo bars. Firstly there is NO packaging, secondly they last for ages, thirdly I have really long, thick hair and to put enough shampoo on is like 'pour some in my hand, rub it between my hands, apply it and need more, repeat (but with super slippy hands)...' yawn. With a shapoo bar its easier to just get on with applying it and when I have enough on...lather up! Fab! Plus I can add different things to the mix to suit my hair at different times of year...more rich oils for winter etc To those who worry abt the ph being too harsh...the curing time mellows the ph so just buy some cheap litmus papers (100s for hardly any money) and test ur soap as it cures. U can buy a shampoo bar whilst urs is curing and just make a new batch every 6 months should be enough to never run out!

I've been using shampoo bars for a little over a year. Due to health reasons I had to remove many products from my life and many of them included SLS.. (even my dental hygienist finally told me to stop using normal toothpaste when I asked her why it burned my mouth so much lol) I've heard so many people say that shampoo bars are bad for your hair, however mine is in the best shape its been in for years; it has body and and feels so soft, my scalp itches way less, my dry scalp has vastly improved and my hair is less oily than ever before. after a rough adjustment and really learning how to use the bar to best clean my hair, now I rinse with ACV rinse about every other week or so and I've not had a single problem. Never going back!! ^-^

Hair likes a acidic pH. A good shampoo is going to be at a pH of 6.5, maybe 7, at the highest. Even with that high of pH you still need to use a condition to close the cuticle and bring the pH back down to around 4.5 where hair likes it. Soap is pH 8 at best, though most websites will say the average pH for handmade soap is 9-10. Lush shampoo bars are not soap, they use a detergent/sulfate base so it starts at a lower shampoo-ish pH. Some people find success using soap as shampoo as long as they also do something like an apple cider vinegar rinse after wards as a conditioner. Using soap too long on your hair without also using something to lower the pH (and for some people even if they do) will cause brittle hair at best, at worst the hair will start falling.

I just wanted to say that I appreciated the small batch formula. I have been using a shampoo bar for over 6 years, and my fine dry curly hair loves it. I have used your recipe and made a batch for shampoo bar and one for face bar. Instead of the water I had made a special infusion of the herbs I wanted for each specific need, and same for the essential oils I used in each. I didn’t have any mica for color but I did use wheat grass in the shampoo bars and it gave it a beautiful green color. Because the infusion I used, they have a certain color to them. Next I will do body soaps. I’m so excited my first try making them, turned out to be a success. I did not use a soap calculator this time. In the future I might. I did not have a thermometer like the one you mentioned, but I did use a kitchen one and I did ok keeping it within 10 degrees of the temperature. Thanks again for the visual of making the soap. It was really helpful!

To rinse after shampoo bar it's a great idea to use 1/4tsp citric acid in a gallon of water and pour over head. No need to rinse. I've only used white vinegar or apple cider vinegar but the smell gets to me. I've been back on bought shampoo for a while but you've inspired me to make bars again. Read about citric acid rinse so going to try that. Makes hair silky, glossy and shiny.😊

I bought a few shampoo bars from a lady who happens to be Afro American and has beautiful long hair. She makes her own shampoo bars and sells them. I thought her bar was a bit stripping to my hair but it was ok. (She said it was good for our natural sebum) I feel that I need to learn more about it so I can make my own bars. I already started with making lip balms and whipped Shea butter. Now I want to learn how to make soap and shampoo bars.

Thanks for the tip that's good to know. I wonder if that is what my subscriber did wrong. I had a comment from someone saying they put theirs in the basement to cool down and they turned out sticky. Is the cool temperature what caused that you think?
@jeangreenfield5993
@jeangreenfield5993 6 лет назад
Putting in a fridge is only essential if the soap base has a lot of added natural sugar ingredients - milks, honey, fruit purée. They can cause the soap to discolour during saponification (in the gel phase). Only other reason to fridge it is if it doesn't seem to be setting up. Sticky soap just needs lots of time in a dry , warm airy place. I have made very soft soap before, so a lack of lye used.

Note, you don’t get an explosion by adding water to NaOH. You risk the mixture erupting (volcano like) quickly. This mixture is almost at boiling point so it can catch you unaware and lead to nasty burns. But definitely no explosion. Also, saponification occurs within 48 hours so there is no lye left and your soap is safe to use. The 4-6 week curing is simply drying for hardness. 😊

A few tips from a seasoned soap maker: this is a true soap (Lush uses detergents, not soap....shampoos are detergents too, not soap) and true soap will raise the cuticle of your hair. This can impact hair color and can make hair feel very dry. Be cautious on color treated hair. Follow with an apple cider vinegar rinse. It helps the cuticle lay flat again. For those that don't want to purchase the ingredients, consider J. R. Liggett's. It is a very nice, basic (real soap) shampoo bar (available on Amazon). Allow for an adjustment period. It can several weeks for hair to adjust. Hard water and true soap don't always work well together. If you don't like it for hair, this will be a great soap for body!

LUsh shampoo bars are NOT soap. They are SLS ( or detergent based). Soap, even when called a shampoo bar, has too high a pH for use on hair. It can be done but you need to also use some sort of acid rinse to compensate for the high pH of the soap or you run a very high chance of destroying your hair

Brooke Flinn I agree! I have a wonderful soap recipe that I found online that was promoted as a shampoo bar. It is 20% superfatted . I washed my hair with it and it was terrible! Ya know when you bathe with handmade soap it has a grip when rinsing? That was in my hair! I just knew it would be damaging for hair and would never promote it as shampoo! I’ll stick to professional shampoos. On a side note, my soap recipe is amazing, but never for hair!
