This week, a Muskrat Gulch innovation! A simple Igloo cooler turned into a supercooler and then it goes up against a Yeti. Which one will win? And which one will be the most cost-effect?

In real life applications, might go with a light colored outer shell as well. I've seen other tests show ligther colored coolers get another half day of ice retention all else equal. Very cool video.

For sure. Black is like adding a little heater if it will get any sun.

"I don't want this to turn into a hillbilly thing." Brother, it almost always turns into a hillbilly thing, but that's what gives it it's charm.

We left three pop in a cheap cooler wrapped in a parka for five hours in a van in the sun in 95 degree weather. Came back and enjoyed nice cold drinks. The coat is very useful

You know seeing how the yeti had one ice cube more at the end It is not unlikely that at the start the yeti’s bag of ice could have had at least one or more pieces to begin with in relation to the DIY cooler. If you wanted to be precise you could take one or two 2L soda bottles filled with water and frozen solid then placed in each cooler, then later drained and measured how many ounces of water there was from the ice melting, thus giving you an exact measurement of how much ice still remained.

Great video! I'm gonna do the cheap option. All I need is foam in the can. I have a fridge/ freezer . The old syroofoam coolers in Australia were awesome. But nowhere to be found.

Hello, I thought that if you place some more foam Between the lids(Tape and grease or something it all up so they don't stick to each other while curing) would increase sun-blocking protection and insulation.

If you insulated the top more (say a piece of foam board in between the inner cooler top and the lid) it would have done better.

Thanks for the awesome video. Could you by chance provide all the materials that you purchased in order to make this new cooler? I got stuck on the part about the Caulking. Do you spread it everywhere where the foam is exposed to dry or do you use many coats to the caulking? Other than those little details, very excited to do this for a fun little hobby

With car space at a premium, the yeti makes more sense. Also, just like with building your own computer, you are the Warren, repair, and service tech. Not every is willing to invest thier time and energy building cooler. That said, this build is pretty cool.

Was the lid on the cooler you used in your build insulated? If it wasn't putting some foam in there might have made it outlast the Yeti.

Can confirm that yetis are infact bear proof, I just want to say that bear proof doesn't mean your cooler escapes without a scratch. It means the bear won't get into the cooler

Close enough. I think you would have done even better if you had brought the insulation to the top of the container and insulated the container lid.
@dangerous8333

not true, almost everyone says that insulating the lid removes the air pocket and it's not good.

Interesting concept .... hillbilly thing ha! But Brother, center the camera on the project, not the hillbilly. Try epoxy on the foam next time. It works.

Bears don’t like experiments or projects for hobbies. If you are caught face to face with a bear during these activities do NOT make eye contact or smile! And do NOT reveal any enjoyment is being or will be had!!!

$800? A Yeti 65 that holds more than that Igloo is $350. Yes they’re expensive and overpriced but I don’t like when people over exaggerate the actual price.

Gentle advice for future vids: *Avoid rambling off subject straight away *Get to the action first & voiceover the intention if needed *Have camera angle so we can see the action not your talking head looking down *Show us the steps & edit for quickness *You talked more than you showed & we are not wiser on how to recreate this project Thank you

look man heres the REAL DEAL.... you seem like a great dude... we honestly think alike.. but i own 4 or 5 RTIC coolers.. (yes yeti is a rip off and RTIC is the same but cheaper) but they add up to $1500 or so... you are from Canada so ice retention may not be the first thought in your mind because its cold most of the time. here in ALABAMA ... its 90 plus F most of the year... not only that (because i think your cooler is equal to a yeti in a house.... sitting still... no direct sun).... all that stuff that goes into the outdoor life... long story short i have owned 25 or more $50 coleman and all the other coolers that are cheap and die... i have only 1 of each size RTIC... because when it falls off my 4 wheeler... it doesnt break i put it back on... when i stand on it as a fishing platform in my boat it doesnt break.. .... when i forget and leave it in the back yard to dry for a month it doesnt dry rot and get brittle.. i can go in for DAYS... about real life outdoorsman stuff.. but heres the real deal. i see your point ... you made a cooler for $80 the can keep ice in a beasement as long as a yeti.... and that is cool it really is.... but at the end of the day you are from Canada ..... and the outdoor life , packing guns, and coolers, and atv's, and all that good stuff is frowned upon and rejected alot of times and also your wife obviously owns the budget... so to all of us real outdoorsmen and durable cooler owners ... we understand. but thank you for taking the time to at least prove your wife wrong hope it was worth it.. P.S.... i will directly test your homemade cooler vs my 4 year old RTIC on the boat, in the woods, in my truck, and everywhere in between for a true full comparison

LOL... Thanks for your input. You don't know Canada that well do you? Let;s see... its in the high 90s today. No, we do not have the weather you have for the entire year but between May and late September, we're as hot as the Carolinas and Georgia. I'm sorry you didn't get the entire point of the video. And I'll put my outdoor skills against yours any time. It was a fun video to do. That's all. You can have your Yeti. Thank you very very much for watching. I appreciate it. And I appreciate you taking the time to comment.

@@razorwire3056 im actually soory i was that way in the comment... all the me vs you can be left behind and theres no reason to bebate... you did what a typical liberal here in America would do and try to go back and forth or cloud the debate... just to be honest like i said before your cooler is as good and better at RETAINING ICE.... but a true outdoorsman... a true boatsman.. a captain.. a spearfisherman like me... ANY PERSON who is out doors in the beating sun alot would absolutely demolish your ice retainer. that is a fact... your feelings of being a better outdoorsman cant chage that... your wife not letting you buy a durable cooler cant change that nothing will... so in sum.. you saved money thats a win... you have a cooler that retains ice as well as a yeti and thats a win... but anyone who is a true outdoorsman that isnt 90 years old would not benifit from it... i already told you i agree yeti is a rip off... but RTIC (and others) make coolers just as durable and hold ice just as long for half the price.. so that means after your budget cooler is broken and dry rotted and gone 3 and 4 times over the rtic will still bet there... even if you have to replace the closing bujee for $15 thats it... and that makes your video to your wife... that you should have told youll spend your money on what you want to... irrelevant to anyone who actually lives the outdoor life... and if you want me to test it Vs my RTIC 65..... i will pay for shipping to me and ill film the entire test... sun, rain, hunting season, spearfishing, 4 whellin...

@@jasonanderson261 Jesus Christ you're getting in deeper Pal. I am further to the right than Ronald Reagan. You can call me almost anything you want but a liberal isn't one of them. I chose to make a goofy cooler and I thought I did it in a fun way. 1,292 views and you are the one who thinks I am a liberal. How about you just stop assuming. I own handguns. I own an AR-15. I am a firearms instructor. I teach hunter safety courses. I do not vote liberal. Ever. Just stop.
