It takes a special kind of person to recognize the " yankee" engineering that went into this machine, most would say its a piece of junk frankenstined together. There was a need and someone meet the need with their talent and supplies on hand. Thanks for the video Jake!

Wow that thing is SOOO COOL! I absolutely love it! I think I really need to find something like this someday... its got Colin written all over it LOL! So much thought and engineering went into every part of that thing its really amazing! Definitely dont get stuff like that anymore! Interesting note about that engine- it's a mutt! According to the tag and some other characteristics its a 1948 Model N, however, that carb is off a 5 or 6s. I think that would explain the lack of governor too as the model N used an air vane governor that interacted with the bracket you found under the carb and that bracket would be connected to an updraft flo jet. The 5 and 6s governors went from the air vane directly to the throttle and that 2nd little tab that's on the carb (which is what served as the connection between the throttle cable and the spring of the governor). I bet the guy that made it also cut the rest of the original gas tank brackets off of the top shroud mounts, which is why those 2 mounts look so weirdly shaped and beefy. Overall a super neat piece that I definitely want to admire in person next time I'm over LOL! Very well throughout and truly some amazing and classic American farmer engineering where they worked with the random junk they had at the time and made a very well built and functional machine out of it!
@5Tractorguy
@5Tractorguy Год назад
You're going to have to start keeping an eye out for homemade machines! Man, so he really did piece together not only a machine but an engine too... wonder if that's why it lacks power having a carb from a smaller engine? He used whatever he had kicking around, that's for sure! Though you figure if it was the 40's - 50's, there wasn't much on the market for snow removal except larger walk behind tractors so if the budget was tight, he made do! Next time you're here ya can take a gander at it for sure...

That is a cool little machine, the engine reminds me I still need to rebuild the Briggs model 8 water pump engine I have sitting in a box at work -_- The old guy definitely had that little walk behind tractor over built and well thought out, be cool to see what else he had built for attachments that were to go with it but I guess that might be lost to time by now.

Very cool little tractor! Not sure, but I think that's a 'swirl plate' in the carb throat. It helps to do two things; to help 'mix' the fuel and air and to assist with vaporization of the fuel before reaching the combustion chamber. Not sure how effective it was, but surely it helped somewhat. Love your videos, glad to see you back. Have a Merry Christmas, and a very prosperous New Year! ! !
@5Tractorguy
@5Tractorguy Год назад
Ain't it?! That's about the definition I was searching for, thanks Santa... Odd that it was needed on such a small engine, but hey, maybe the B&S engineers were onto something. Glad to have you swinging by to watch! Thanks, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you as well!
@troyken9960

I wonder if that had some type of home made snow blower mounted to the front. Several plans in early Pop-Sci or Pop Mech.may have been inspiration in that era.
@5Tractorguy
@5Tractorguy Год назад
Snow blower attachment keeps getting mentioned here! Bet it did with the pulley on the engine shaft... I'm figuring this is 40's - early 60's given the engine and hardware that was used (square nuts). You are right, matches that era of "build it yourself" stuff!

Jake, do you really think two videos a year is OK? You are a very interesting, loveable and entertaining guy. If you made a lot more videos we would watch them. I told you before to make a video of you eating a bowl of corn flakes and we would watch it. I believe you could multiply your subscribers 100 times. You could turn this channel into a real money maker and buy that property you want so badly. Watch Mustie 1 not only would you thoroughly enjoy his videos but you could style your own content after his model - he has 635,000 subscribers and I see no difference between what he does and what you do - none. We really do want to see more of you. Art from Ohio
@5Tractorguy
@5Tractorguy Год назад
Yep, I do Art because YT is just something fun that I enjoy. Besides, this makes video #4 for the year! I did monetize my channel last year because YT was running ads regardless, so I figured why not... One things for sure, unless you're getting tens of thousands of views per upload, it's not profitable... at all. Depending on ads, it works out to around $5 - $6 per 1000 views. The time and effort I put into building my business (and living a personal life) is much more valuable to me. It's fun to film projects, talk to you guys and make new friends. But the time it takes as a whole to produce a video from start to upload vs. what it draws for dough is worthless. I've got the money for property- I'm just at the mercy of what hits the market. Mustie has his style, I have mine... and I'm sticking to it. Don't know what else to tell ya Art!

Thanks Gary... Nothing solid yet. Found a place in Jaffrey NH about 3wks ago. Small house, 2 big Morton buildings out back (30X42 and 45X70). Nice spread, but the buildings weren't outfitted with electricity, water, insulation, septic, etc. Overall price was okay, but the added cost of setting up the buildings for work on top of that was going to stretch me too thin.

That is some more rig and is really long legged and will 'move out smartly' as the old local rocket scientist allowed. He worked for Martin-Marrieta.
