I think he phrased the answer poorly. Cops say that we shouldn't engage in firefights all willy nilly with no regard for 'the backstop' aka where the bullets will hit in the neighborhood. If you're in the country, you're fine. If you're in the suburbs, an FMJ round from any handgun or rifle may hit a neighbor's house. Personally I think the person should NOT be expected to be 'checking his backstop' if in fear for his life. And THAT'S definitely a life threatening experience.

Saw a post on reddit recently where some guy was touting his respect for his family by unloading and locking his firearm once he gets home because that is their wishes. He got shredded in the comments obviously. But this is why. You need your weapon sometimes more at home than you do out in public.
