Being in the army I miss my family more and more everyday. I signed a 4 year contract and I’m only 16 weeks in still in training. You never know what you have til it’s no longer in front of you, I’m proud to serve and train for my country it can just suck sometimes because I love my family very much
This video has been really comforting. This past couple of weeks, I've been opening more and more to the idea of enlisting, and watching your videos has been part of the process that's made the idea more appealing. Homesickness has really been my biggest worry, so with this in mind, I may be telling my local recruiter I've decided to join soon.
I did 12 years active duty. I got out in 1994. When I got out all I could think about was hooray I am out. My last 4 years I was stationed at Incirlik ABS Tu. I sewed on Staff Sargent their. What got me worked up was the fact I originally was assigned their for 15 Mo. The first time I got involuntarily extended I wasn't too upset but when I got promoted I got involuntarily extended again. It seemed back then I was never going to leave their. The office was short staffed and I often worked Saturday and Sunday afternoons. I was just not a happy airman after the third year. I did get an associates degree while stationed at my second base with CCAF but it was to do with my AFSC Finance. When I got out I tried to get a job as an office worker at various places but they paid pretty low wages or you had to have a bachelors degree. I soon found out an Assoc degree just didn't get you that far. I HIGHLY recommend that while in the Air Force as an enlisted person you go back to college at night and get your Bachelors degree. I eventually did this, while working as a Federal Corrections Employee, but now I pay $180 a month for my student loan, When I was in, the Air Force only had VEAP (Veterans Education Assistance Program ) which barely covered 1 year of college. Please take advantage of going back to college. In the civilian world you truly need at least a 4 year degree to make good money. I finally did get back on as a civilian employee with the government as a Software Engineer GS-12 but it took allot of sacrifice and hard work. I sure wish I would have had the GI Bill. I am not bitter I am just laying it out what could happen when you get out of the service unprepared. The old saying the grass is always greener truly applies.
I love WildBlue Wednesdays! (and Saturdays) 😊 another good video topic in the books. I've thought about it and being away from family & friends is the only real downside I can think of for joining but you helped ease my fears with this video. You make everything so relatable & I appreciate that! I loved the part when you imitated sinking into your bed at home... 😂
Hey man I been in DEP sense January and I'm leaving May 10th anybody else?? I got my number one job pick too lucky me lol Enjoy your time in the DEP it's pretty easy for the most part The biggest challenge I see is physical fitness
I've always been like you, a bit more independent than others. I'm 18 and have had jobs since i was about 13 so i rarely need money from my parents. Plus i like being away from home sometimes. I can't wait to be in the Air Force. Useful info! Thank you for what you do
Hey! I love your videos and even thought I don't plan on going into the military your videos are very enjoyable. I still wish you were in minot so I could meet you. And yes you should be a tour guide lol, from your tour of all of minot. Have a great time. Bye.
Great video! I'm a little weary of being away from my family. My husband & I haven't been away from each other more than a week & I'm a new mom! But this helps a lot! Thank God for technology. I hope I get to meet someone from Guam but I'm sure I'll make friends regardless.
you're right bout AF replacing your family.... i only used to go on leave only during christmas and i'll comeback after new years and i'll be so excited to be back, i'll even go to special events in the af that i dont do at home now that im back...i work for the city of new york now and whenever the job has an event i dont even go but when i was in the AF i didnt wanna miss any events
thank you for this video, i am leaving for basic training May 17th and im getting nervous about being homesick but it will be nice to have a "new" family through the air force :)
+Aubrey Barringer Congrats on your ship date ma'am. It is hard and you will get homesick no matter what, but your statement about the Air Force being a new family is spot on. The tight knit bonds of the Air Force is amazing.
+Devin O'Rourke If I remember correctly, you get like 4-5 of everything? Something like that. Laundry crew is constantly washing clothes and giving them back to you
My advice; Try it for 4 years first. See how you like it before you make that bigtime commitment. 4 years is very beneficial over the 6 year contract IMO. Your first year is basically basic/tech school and learning to adapt to the AF. It will go fast. Depending on where you go, what you do, and your attitude, the next few years could potentially be miserable. Know what you want before signing on that line. Also, figure out what jobs in the AF you want, and don't commit until you get them. Don't give in to something you don't like or want to do just to get into the Air Force. I promise youll regret it, and those working around you wont want you there, if you don't want to be there. Best of luck. **If at all possible, talk to someone who is already in the career field you want to join, before signing on that line!! Find something you want to add to your resume, and will be beneficial just in case you want to revert to civilian life.
J Lemmkee appreciate the advice brother. I'm going for Intel. I believe you have to do six years for that but I'm not sure. Desk job in plus computer shit is up my ally. I'm not much of a physical labor construction type guy.
I know after time living in the Dorms they say you have you move out would you go to the barracks or would you have to go to the towers or get a house.
+Azalia Good question! They pretty much work the same as if you were a civilian. You get a W-2. You can use any service you want. You file. You get returns. Just that simple. We can actually file our taxes for free on base at the finance office, so that's a huge plus too!
+Aaron Benitez *special operations forces, also nope not at all, every branch has these. I know a lot about them personally but it would be cool if he made a video on it going into more depth
+Trevor Nunes You pretty much just wear it at work. People shouldn't be at a shopping mall in uniform.. but it is allowed for us to stop by a grocery store/restaurant in uniform
Quick question. If you have a girlfriend back at home and you're in your beginning stages in the Air Force (bootcamp tech school) when can she move to you? And live with you?
Can you do a video over medical conditions standards in the Air Force. I have a close friend who is considering on joining with me, but they have a medical condition called Hypothyroidism. Unequivocally, he is in shape, very active and looks as though he doesn't have it, but has to take medication for it everyday. Will he still be able to join?
+Brandon Duritsa There should be a list of disqualifying medical conditions, but in the end of the day a recruiter will know more to see what will be ok and what may stop someone from joining.
My recruiter is saying he's trying to get me out earlier, like I have asked him to do. But it just seems like he's playing games with me at this point. Any advice.
Well. I can tell you from personal experience. He's not. His "Job" is to put you in the Air Force and it helps him not at all to keep you at your home as a civilian. Recruiters go through a lot of people and can only send a certain amount through MEPS per month. Whichever he feels has the most potential is the people he sends out first. The others he will stall but will still try to push to boot and getting their career started.
Okay so say I want to get a tattoo on my forearm once I'm in, after tech school and maybe a few months after being at my first base. If I have a mechanical job or something where you can occasionally work in your tee and trousers without your coat on. Would I still be able to just wear my tee and not have to have a coat on if I have that tattoo? Or will I have to wear the coat with the sleeves down at all times at work?
Kilais J. Wasn't replying to you. You basically had it right. I was saying neither to the OP. They don't let you keep your phone on you OR send it home. So neither.
There's other units you can be apart of for security forces that can you try and be apart of once you are in and done with training. Some security force units patrol outside the base
+Azalia PT tests are every 6 months or every 12 months, depending on your last score. So when you finish a PT test, you should know approximately when your next one is, give or take a few weeks.
it's not that bad now a days you have computers email cell phones back in the day we didn't have that s*** we had to walk a couple miles to a trailer with bones in it to call home and it was expensive so hang in there it could always be worse
