This was one of the only times a game ever made me cry during an ending. There is something about the emotional strings that this story pulls in accordance to the love of your fleet and the journey you endure that gives this finale such a punch to the feels.
Homeworld was masterfully crafted. Period. Most RTSes suffer from the heroes trying to be overly badass, and we see so much of it, that everytime we see a badass character, he's meaningless to us. Really, the characters that really matter to us are the normal people, fighting against impossible odds in an impossible situation, and never giving up. Homeworld perfected making that connection with your men. And that's why Homeworld will always be one of the best games in existence.
This is honestly the only RTS that has made me feel strongly for those lttle pixels lost along the way through my weak admiralship. In no other RTS did it feel like it mattered how many you lost but the fact tht every one who died on the way to Hiigara was among those who could never see their real home really hit me deep. Maybe that's because I am an immigrant myself.
The voice actor here is also the same voice actor for the old guy in the tub in the BSG Razor movie. Yeah, I would bet Ronald Moore actually played this game :)
This game is over ten years old, and still gives me goosebumps when I play it right through, from the opening intro, to the return to Kharak, to this ending. Epic storytelling in every way.
This game inspired me in so many ways that no other piece of art have done... This will live in my memory as long as I do. Praise this game and Its creators. Everything: from the music to the cutscenes and the game Itself. Absolutely beautiful!
Can anyone else remember the feeling of joy and acomplishment when you finally saw this the first time after finishing the game? And was I the only one deeply moved when they said that Karan S'Jet was able to be removed from the Mother Ship and made it to Higeera?
I still play it man...as much as I can..I just love it..the storyline, gameplay and even the effects still stand up today. This game was WAY ahead of its time.
Ahhh.....the old games that really had a story to tell! games made with passion and heart trying to impress through art and originality not tities and violence! I have to say....the Homeworld series is like a good wine the older it gets the better we start to apreciate its uniqueness and depth! This ending and the one from Syberia where the only ones to ever make me feel warm and satisfied for completing the game!
Hell I miss this game, the music, the ion cannons, the raiders, the battleships, the backgrounds, the animations....fucking EVERYTHING!!! "Modern' games don't do SHIT to me, this game does.
Yes, a tragic ending for the people that want to live on Hiigara. However it's still a good ending. Many wise people would said: "Great victory comes from great sacrifice." something like that. The Pride of Hiigara must live on! They deserves this wonderful World!!!
This game is one of the best ever i have played. I borrowed it from my friend and had to return it. But that was 5 years ago, now i wish i asked him if i could keep it. This game has great gameplay and breathtaking story. In all my honesty this game is one of the best in the world.
Still, Exiles were exiled to Kharak, and it was hot from their very first day there. I don't remember if Kharak had moon, but Hiigara surely has one. Hiigara was designed to resemble Earth, to make players feel like they really are home. It's near center of the galaxy simply because it's not Earth (i know im kinda contradicting my previous statement). Anyways from what i understand Hiigara is JUST LIKE earth, but it's not the same planet as we live on.
I ahve never played a game with such an amazing game story like Homewolrd, never played a game that gave me goose bump from such emotion ! Homeworld is nothing close to any other game !
@YessMasster once, there was a word to describe such games/products... the word was : EPIC. this game was truly epic. from the beginning to it's very end. ...and those cut movies... perfect. thx for uploading, mate
I always assumed that they have either been relocated to another planet (Taiidan Empire must have had several dozens, so I guess space was not big problem), or assimilated into new Hiigaran society
It mentions in the Cataclysm manual that a lot of them tried to integrate with the Hiigarans but were ostracized and regularly assaulted by Hiigaran cryo tray survivors
@@albinogingerblackman7739 I don't blame them being hostile to former Taiidan citizens. But should they be returned to their homeworld Taiidan since Hiigarans already reclaimed their home?
@@voidkat4202 Taiidan was destroyed or at least rendered uninhabitable by the ancient Hiigaran empire when they discovered the hyperspace core they abused. Its the reason the Bentusi demanded it be handed over, its also the reason the ancient Taiidan empire wanted to eradicate the ancient Hiigarans when they defeated them, but exiled them instead to save face with the galactic council
@genesisanalcom Haha, I'm glad that I uploaded it with every comment like that. It shows how really grand the game was. It was just a piece of really awesome art, and on every one who played it it left big impression. That being said, young ppl now are not willing to play it, because they are used to modern graphics, and of course while HW looks really impressive in 1998 it is not as impressive now. Still, graphics is only one of many aspects of the game.
It's hard watching this and not getting the least bit emotional at all. This really is a beautiful game and I'm disappointed that it's always taking them so long to make sequels. This is still arguably the best RTS series in existence.
This game was so damn good I feel like I actually helped a lost people get back to their long forgotten homeworld. They just don't make games like they used to....
Such a shame that such an amazing game is now dead. It's old, but it'll ALWAYS be on the best games ever list. Me and my friends are starting a games company, and hopefully, with the help of Sierra, we can revive Homeworld. It'll be hard, but it's possible.
Fighting for a place in the world. Thats what i got from this game :") As far as the story is concerned, there is nothing quite like leading an entire race on their journey to find their home.
Totally agree. This ending was like the ultimate tie/wrap up. Real sense of accomplishment with it. So satisfieing. I like in the credits, the galactic map, and they point out earth by pointing to it in the corner. LOL so funny
omg....this video is so much quieter...lol. Thank you for not making me deaf. I love this game so much. If you cant appreciate the gameplay, then you atleast gotta love the story and plot for this game, as well as the music.
If anyone is wondering, the song being played throughout is called Adagio for Strings. (Obviously this is a vocal version, and I like it better this way).
@mikeasz I agree...what an adventure...we got our people home...I felt proud and even shed a few tears. Even after watching this video I got choked up,lol.
Lots of people died in Homeworld: the guys on the Khar Selim, the guys on the Scaffold, the guys on Kharak, some cryo tray people, Taidanii Imperials, Taidanii rebels, Turanics, the Kadeshi, etc... Sure, you could capture ships, but what happened to the crew of those salvaged vessels?
I was fascinated to play HW and HWC. Today, almost 9 years after these impresions, I feel as if Iäll never get anything similar to play on. After HW, I have seen much and tried out many games. I have kind of liked Warcraft III but HW still shines from afar ... like something you cannot get close to. I wonder if we will get more quality games in the future? Why is everything so simplistic, so clear and devoid of subtlety nowadays?
I know of a few homeworld mods that are being planned for other games but none are past the concept stage.. There is still alot of interest in homeworld
Google for "rad video tools", or "rad game tools", i don't remember the exact name now. Anyways the tool allows you to play bik files and convert them. You can also use fraps to capture video from game directly (you can record anything you see on the screen), like i did for this video, as HW bik's are soundless and speech/music is in different file
I truly enjoy this game. One of the best things is that Hollywood has not made an epic fail movie based on this game. Please, leave this game to us who enjoy it and don'¨t make a movie about it.
IMO, a Homeworld series would still be far better since much of the Homeworld story is based off of old Greco-Roman stories and myths (The Odyssey in particular).
This brings back so many memories...I have the game somewhere under a pile of shit...I think I will say sorry to it and play it one last time before Vista fucks up all my old games...
@YessMasster There are restoration and upgrade project for some games around the net, such as freespace2's SCP. Maybe they'll release the source code, someday, thus allowing people to tinker with it and make it better.
One of my favourite renditions of the song. Also, apparently THQ has acquired the rights to Homeworld, so Relic may or may not be able to make Homeworld 3, if it's possible.
@gravitypsa Maybe during vacation? With me getting older, getting some nice education and responsible work I don't have as much free time as I used to anymore.
God fucking damn it...I was like blubbing (stil blubbing) dj eyes out near the end ewhrn when t all the Hiigarans were greeting them and..you know a story is brilliant/epic/FAN-FUCKING-TASTIC when it makes somebody cry their eyes out! Fucking hell, so far this is the only game thats made me feel like this, especially with the Adagio for Strings music in the background. I'm probably not making a proper comment but sorry.
Homeworld was a landmark game for the RTS genre and for Space RTS for that matter. This proves that with a good and well thought out plot and well designed game mechanics classic such as Homeworld can be created. Today's lineup of games are a bit disappointing to me as they focused mostly on visuals. I sure miss games with a good, moving story.
