When I was younger I was such a fan of FRIENDS for a myriad of reasons and found Frasier too hoity toity, so whenever they did a documentary on FRIENDS and the issue about them always losing to Frasier at award shows baffled me so much. Now that I'm older and can finally appreciate the jokes and humor of Frasier, I can see why FRIENDS kept losing to them.. Frasier is on a league of it's own.
Similar situation. I tried Frasier when I was in high school. Didn't get it. Then I watched it a few years later and thought it was brilliant. It's now my favorite show, and I truly believe the best show of all time.
I honestly love when Martin tries to 'gay it up a little', tells Emily that her hair is divine and then gives this little proud nod like 'I did it, I did the gay'.
I like that nobody has a problem with gay people in this series, only of accidentally misleading people. The fear of being impolite is a problem, not sexual orientation.
You can however see the time period it's from. Martin is very kind and considerate to some gays (for example when he was set up for a date with a gay who thought he was gay too, Marty drove him home at the end of the night to make up for the disappointment). But sometimes he expresses disappointment or disgust when there's a situation where his own sons are saying something or doing something that is considered gay, and that gets automatically laugh from the audience.
@@garad123456 its called being true to the character. Thats what all the woke comedies (so called ) dont get. Nobody talks like the right on preachy liberal elite. Its unbelievable untrue and ergo not funny. Martin wasnt in the slightest bit homophobic. He was of his time and generation.
I miss this show, my dish service stopped carrying it just 4 days ago !!! It had just gotten to when Niles & Daphne finally get together ...... I had been waiting for that & now nothing
@@hattienuff1405 In the UK, they showed it on a loop on two Channel 4 channels for at least 7 years, up to '17, probably still showing it. Must've seen every episode 5 or 6 times.
4:38 "Stop chasing these lesbians!" That episode has to be one of the best. When I first started watching the show I assumed Niles' character was meant to be gay because (not meaning to sound offensive or anything) he seemed so camp but the way Niles and Frasier are instead both straight men who SEEM gay sometimes really is funnier.
David Pierce even said it was his personal favorite episode at the James Burrows tribute show. It's narrowly my second favorite after "My Coffee with Niles".
"On a tree by a river sat a little tom tit..." Martin Crane is so proud of having the gayest straight sons in Seattle! I loved this show, and what an incredible cast, crew and writers that helped make this show one of the best ever on TV. They deserved the record 37 Emmys!
Yes but the uploader's comedic instinct for editing is quite lacking. The punchline of that joke was that he was screaming it at the top of his lungs to be heard over the music, which had just ended.
The episode where Marty has the conversation with his wife friend , is incredibly touching and also tragic . How times have changed . Its not quite where it should be , but its moved on
@@darth856 Unfortunately, people still kill themselves. Maybe not in the States anymore, maybe not in Britain or Ireland, but just several years ago a kid died by suicide in Poland and a teenager died by suicide in Czechia (two totally separate, unrelated cases). There probably are more such deaths around the world we don't even know about

The episode with Patrick Stewart was just priceless. Towards the end, you could see him going ".... well shit... I mean.. it may just change my mind..."
lol that episode is one of my favorites too. Patrick Stewart is hilarious in that role. I'd only known him from X-men when I saw this (I'm not a Trekkie) and I had no idea he was so funny. He also has a comedy on starz called "blunt talk" which he's great in. its a great show but I'm not sure if it's coming back coz it probably doesn't have a lot of viewers.
We are very lucky (here in the UK) as I get 3 episodes of Fraser EVERY morning(with my coffee and toast).Although this means that the whole series is repeated quite quickly,I don't mind,I can watch it over and over again, and still find something new. Great Acting, even in the small parts. Great Directing, and above all Great Scripts.
Their reaction shots add so much to the show. When Fraser tells niles “you have to breakup with dad” and then niles explodes at the first thing Martin says the reaction shot of Frazier is priceless.
I only recently found out that the guy playing Bulldog is gay too. Quite a performance to portray the most overtly heterosexual character on television ! 😄
That’s why despite his sexism, macho attitude, he had a friendly relationship with Gil and never had any script where he made fun of gays, out of respect for the actor.
Oh please. I always thought he was really flamey despite how macho he talked about sports and women. It was no surprise to me or my gay best friend whatever he turned out to be gay.
@@JeffmChicago I think it might have been the brah. If you look closely, at first it seems like she puts her hand behind her back, id assume to unhook the brah, then she pulls it out. What she pulls out looks more like a brah, than something you would use to stuff your cleavage with. Though being a gay man, my knowledge of such matters are fairly limited.
Historically, I rarely watch situation comedies. However, I happily made an exception for "Frasier." The amount of laughing I have done in just one episode, never mind the entire series, beats about any other situation comedy I have ever watched. This ensemble cast, crew and, of course, the writing, made this series stellar.
Great casting, even though in real life he was only 15 years older than Kelsey Grammer. He was also British, from Manchester, England, where Daphne's character was from in the series.
Greatest sitcom ever on TV. Such brilliant writing. Acting overwhelmingly good. Stupendous! Who on earth did the casting, who chose gil and Kenny and bulldog...such brilliance. Not to mention ross and daphne, and the wonderful character of Patrick Stewart!!!
"Is there anything that man can't do?" "Time will tell." Heaven help me I'd forgotten how damn funny this brilliant show is!! Now, excuse me, I have to go and learn the lyrics for "Buttons and Bows..."
While in this pandemic, I have become somewhat saddened- to the point of near depression. Watching these clips made me laugh out loud, and lightened my spirits for a bit. Thank you so much for posting this! I am so grateful!
The actor why plays "Gay Guy" is James Patrick Stewart. He is a daytime TV actor, and is currently playing Valentine Cassidine on the ABC soap opera "General Hospital".
“Niles, I didn’t invite Tom over so he could spend all night talking to you in the kitchen. There are others who would like to have a crack at him.” Lmao 😂 😂
The series, although originally aired on NBC, is owned and distributed by CBS. As contracts have been expiring recently, CBS-owned content has been getting removed from Netflix, which has been focusing more on streaming its own original series. Mercifully, Frasier can currently be found on Hulu, along with a lot of other gems of broadcast TV.
Martin was not gay. Technically speaking he was asexual. He described how he used to date women but never married due to the trauma of his parents marriage. Later had colon surgery which left him with a colostomy bag and unwilling to be sexually intimate again. He claim his catholic faith helped him.
State ur source Mali. Even if he was A sexual or had a poop bag attached to him.... whats that got to do w/ whether he was gay or not? Many gay men don't have sex just like srt8 men.
John was gay. He never came out publicly in the press but it was well known by those around him. A quick google search will tell you that his Obituaries who "straight" washed to the consternation of his friends.
Well, that's a measure of their skill! The whole point of being a good actor is to be able to play convincingly a character that is really nothing like you, in fact! the MORE abismal the differences between the actor and the role he plays, the more of a challenge it is for the actor to perform it well, and sell us the character.
Excellent episode with Patrick Stewart. He is so talented...I'm glad he was chosen to play a part in such an amazing show like Frasier! The men of Frasier are all fabulous actors...their comedy is impeccable and they mesh together perfectly!
@@jpsned Funny, I got the opposite read. 'He can't be gay, he's got muscles!' As in the cliche strong tough guys can't be gay (Versus his scrawny questionable sons). It's the modern day where you chase a buff dude and ogle each others tight bods on grindr
@@37thraven You know, you're right. I got a little mixed up with my stereotypes! In Martin's day, gay guys were not muscular, and as Niles pointed out, they carried poodles.

Here in NYC (like everywhere) there are now a bunch of channels, even without cable, so more stuff gets rerun. Not on major networks, but PBS (Public Broadcasting System) stations have often run one or both of two Brit sitcoms over and over for years until recently, Are You Being Served and Keeping Up Appearances.
My family and I watch this over and over again and still laugh. Now my two year old grandson sings the Frasier theme and when he comes home he asks for Freezer Freezer theme song . Just love this show .
This was and still is the Funniest show ever. PERFECTION. Frasier always tried to be classy and refined but he was hilarious when he let his guard down. Niles too. The whole cast just clicked. Never be another show like it. Also the Radio show episode just breaks me up everytime 🤣🤣🤣
10:08 Captain Picard and Captain Bateson meet again. (Kelsey Grammer guest starred in an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation in case anyone's wondering.)
My favorite comment from a very astute reviewer of the show: "'Frasier' is basically a show about two gay men who happen to be sexually attracted to women."
I don’t like that at all. Being gay is basically nothing else but being attracted to the same sex and has absolutely nothing to do with being refined and sensitive. You are trying to reverse the definition.
@@Celisar1 TL;DR I go on a rant about GAY THEORY as a man who is attracted to other men, I’d say that there’re three (or four if you count the definition that just meant happy) distinct meanings for the word gay. 1. Gay, the sexuality 2. Gay, the personality 3. Gay, the insult. Gay the sexuality is just plain and simple “I’m gay, im interested in other men” Gay the personality means someone acts in one of the ways gays are stereotypically thought of, (or in the case of Frasier, accurately get how a good number of gay people act to an extent) primarily the “yass queen 💅💅✨✨” stereotype. Believe it or not, I know a couple gay men who actually fit into this stereotype, they are insufferable and bring a bad name to gays. And gay the insult is just basically a meaningless swear that has nothing to do with actual gayness (ex: “hey bro, did ya get the ketchup for the fries?” “Nah, bro, forgot it” “bro that’s gay af”) …anyway, that’s just my two cents.
I really liked Tom, the station manager. I wish he had been a regular character. I liked Edward, from the opera, and Patrick Stewart is always welcome. I also wish David Ogden Steirs could have made another appearance. Great guest stars, every one.
Loved the last clip. When I first saw that episode I didn't realize the friend was David Ogden Stiers. Giving M*A*S*H and Frasier a connection, however slight, was awesome.
I saw many similarities between Stier’s character in MASH and Frasier, both are snooty and pretentious, but their heart was genuine and always at the right place.
Stier's MASH character Winchester (a snooty doctor from Boston with a Mid-Atlantic accent....Although his accent was more Brahmin than Frasier's) was most definitely an inspiration for Frasier, and this episode speaks to that by having Martin suspect Stier's character was the real father to Frasier and Niles due to all their similarities. Of course, he comes out as gay to Martin, in real life Stiers was gay and eventually came out publicly some years ago.
@@KalOrtPor I saw Frasier first, as a kid in the 90s, but when I got a little older I got into M*A*S*H. I love both shows and own all 11 years of M*A*S*H on DVD. When I first saw Charles he reminded me a lot of Frasier. And Frasier did live in Boston while he was on Cheers. There was even an episode of Frasier where Daphne pointed out that Martin and Colonel Potter were a lot alike.
Two of the top three male stars are gay in real life .and played such convincing straight men in the show., esp. the father. The “ gay” situations were handled with such love and understanding.
Still the best comedy ever, brilliant writing 5-6 gags per page of the script, all layered in time, incident, character & story arc. And the players really bounced of each other. Only Fawlty comes close.
The funny thing is that other than Frazier, the other 'straight' characters were played by gay men, including Niles, Martin, and the guys at the radio station.
John Mahoney is actually not gay as most people think. He said in an interview in 2002 that he had several relationships( with women) that he screwed up because he didn't want to end up like his parents who were probably divoced.
J.F.S Radio Uh huh. Like most gay guys say they're 'confirmed bachelors' or 'haven't found the right woman yet.' Mahoney also said he doesn't have romantic relationships because he had a colostomy. I mean, come on! He's also appeared in a few gay movies like The Broken Hearts Club. I can respect that he wants to keep his private life private. But in Hollywood, you'd get a big laugh from the entertainment community if you said Mahoney was straight. But who really cares? He's a fine actor, and his business is his business.
It's especially tragic seeing David Ogden Stiers now, because I remember when he came out 10 years ago saying he still hoped to find a life partner. I wonder if he ever did.
I didn't know he had died -- so sad. In my head, he's still about 60, but I googled and saw that he was 75 -- not young but a little on the young side for passing. Ah well. He was a terrific actor; RIP.
bull dog gil niles (possibly martin) yup frasier was like the ONLY straight main cast guy. what if the creator of the show picked who would come on by picking guys from a gay bar
@@kelleyannethomas5372 He's not. But he's acting partner (Waiting For Godot, maybe other plays) and I think real life friends with Ian McKellan, who is.
My dad introduced me to Frasier, and it is now one of my favorite shows. But my two favorite moments in this video were: 1: Patrick Stewart and 2: Martin throwing his cane at the end. What a fantastic show.
This is why I get so angry when ppl get upset with straight actors playing non straight characters. It's the talent that matters. Love this show. Entertaining, hilarious and could make you think about social norms without talking down to you or being too preachy. We need more shows like this.
And it's ironic that the actor who played Niles (a straight character) is actually gay in real life ... But, you don't have straight people up in arms about that ("how dare a gay actor portray a straight man!") - how ridiculous making such an issue of these things are! It's all about good acting AND getting the best actor for every part.
@@susanmorano405 straight men don’t do that because the majority of roles are played by STRAIGHT MEN anyways. Gay men do not have the same amount of material written for gay men so when the very few gay roles come along and go to a straight man, gay actors are rightfully frustrated
mike mcgonigle Ehm..No.. I don't think Mahoney is gay. His keeps his life very private, and have also mentioned a couple of female relationships in his past that didn't go out so well.. I did find some articles saying he was gay, but they are all privately written by unconfirmed sources. For that sake, I also found articles congratulating him with expecting a child with his girlfriend in an age of 75. So who the hecks know.. I sudjest we don't speculate before he says it. And I don't really know why he should come out and say if he is hetrosexual. But it would be weird that he didn't come out with David if he was gay. He seems to have been active in alot of political causes.. and seems like a guy who would have comed out proud and clear if he was. And he hasn't.. so yeah.. Let's relax a bit before we starts up rumors we can't confirm.
This was a great compilation. Thanks! Another reminder that I need to get the series dvd set. This was one of my favorite sitcoms. Outstanding cast and writers.
@@darth856 It was an open secret in the industry. John Mahoney had reasons for not coming out publicly -- probably related to his being a Brit of a certain era and to his conservative, working-class background (and at least one of his sibs was still alive when he died) -- but just read the pink press and you'll see that everyone knew.
I've always thought it was really nice the way that Marty is asked out by the guy at 6:00. He's seems to be so genuine in the way that he does it, and actually a little nervous
The episode with Frasier's dad pretending to be gay was absolutely hilarious. Brian Bedford, who played the uncle of Emily (the woman Frasier was wooing) was so funny. I could only imagine the were bloopers, and what could have been said in jest...
The ski lodge episode is the absolute pinnacle of Frasier. A beautiful Shakespearean comedy done in 30 minutes on primetime TV in the 90s. How the hell did they pull it off?
How the hell did they pull the entire show off? It's so well written. I don't think anything else comes close tbh. Yeah, GoT may have won more Emmys but everyone has a lot of things to say about the show's writing starting from seasons 5-6.
