Honda Accord Fuel Filter Replacement

A fastener by fastener tutorial for replacing the fuel filter on a 1997 Honda Accord. This process applies to Accords manufactured from 1994 to 1997.
Honda recommends replacement once every 2 years or 40,000 miles whichever comes first.
While I have found many videos on replacing the fuel filters on the easier Civics I have understandably seen none for the Accords.
The main reasoning being they are buried deep and are difficult to access and unless you know which tools to use they can look almost impossible to remove.
I'll take you through it step by step and show you what tools you'll need to get the job done.

I watched your video several times before working on the fuel filter. Can't believe I would've done it without your help. Great instructions! It is not complicated but the lack of space makes it hard.

Watched two of your videos. All I can say is WOW, excellent job. Great use of 'breaks' in video to clarify components and answer questions. You great right into the job, not wasting time or long-winded comments. Thanks for such great videos...! Feel free to make videos on everything for a '97 Accord, my daughter has one!

Planning to do this on my 94 Accord soon. All I can say is thank you dad for leaving behind your glorious snap on crow foot set and tools for me to do the job with ease and not have to fight with it!

People are going to get scared off by this if they don't have the tools listed. You can do this job without crows feet, I just did it with spanners, it really isn't that hard. You can do everything by just reaching down from above, the only reason to be underneath is to see what needs to be done and confirm afterwards that there are no leaks.

Did you take the top or bottom line of first and what wrenches did you use when you were doing it from above?

I could not have done this job without this video. Excellent in all ways: lighting, video, narration, equipment required at the start, warnings and cautions. I had never needed a crow's foot before, but I can see now why such a tool is necessary. I could not readily find a flare nut crow's foot and I lucked out getting flare nut off with the regular crow's foot wrench. Whew. Thanks.

Great video! Only add-in I have is that my grandson's 1994 Accord Coupe has brake lines that ran very close along side the gas line. I could not use both crowfoot and crowfoot flare nut wrenches from below because I could not turn the 14mm crowfoot flare nut wrench without hitting the brake lines. The filter holddown was also a bear to work on but once it was loosen, I had him turn the filter from above while I held the flare nut below so as not to damage the brake lines. All that said, this video was a great help. It gave me a good idea of what I was getting into. Thanks!

Busho man just wanted to say I’ve been watching your videos a while and they’ve really helped me, you do very good informational videos with great view of what your doing at all times. I’ve changed out my distributor, transmission solenoids and heater core inlet hose, I also do my brakes and oil changes, but am going to do a tune up soon here and was going to swap out fuel filter as well, didn’t realize where it was tho I thought it would’ve been near the back wheel or passenger side lol, may need to calculate some extra time for this job tho lol. Thanks for the videos man keep it up!!

Excellent video! I was able to bump both top and bottom fasteners loose with an impact wrench. Also, rather than fighting two crow feet from the bottom I has an assistant hold the filter from the top while I worked from the bottom. Lastly a ratcheting box end wrench works good for the 10mm mounting bolt.

I can't thank you enough for pointing out that the smaller washer doesn't get used for the Accord application. I jammed one in the first time and it leaked like crazy, couldn't figure out why. If this is the last video you ever do, I consider your life is complete. ;o)

Dude you always make great videos! Thanks for the tip on the Flare nut tool .. hope I am able to change mine out. I have over 300K on the vehicle and I am not sure when that filter was changed (I bought it when it had 92K on it). Car starts then stalls immediately - will not restart unless I prime it by cycling the ignition. I think my filter is due for replacement!

Thank you so much! I have a 98 acura cl 2.3l and the filter is located in the same spot. I never knew these crowsfeet existed, I tried two separate days and a total of 5 hours trying to get the filter out with normal wrenches/ flare wrenches and there just isn't enough room. I plan on buying a sae & metric set of crowsfeet this weekend to finish up this project and many more to come

Could you make a video on how to clean fuel injectors on a honda accord 96? so far your instructions are the best ones out there. I restored my car 90% already just by following your diy videos you're awesome. My engine hesitate acceleration and the injectors contribute to that. Thank you more power

great help man. the flare fitting crows foot did the trick for me. I couldn't hold the 19mm spanner in place and I crushed the hell out of my old filter trying to get the bottom fitting off .. the crows feet made quick work of it tho. thanks! I found the bracket was easy to get off with a 1/4" floppy ratchet and short extension + 10mm. little quicker than the box-end. gotta be the floppy ratchet though, a regular one you can't get an angle on. Also this whole job is WAY easier if you remove the fuel injector rail first. only 3 nuts and some vacuum hoses, and the fuel line you're messing with anyway. Plus you get to see how filthy your injectors + ports are, and clean 'em out. I'd recommend removing the EGR plate and cleaning that real good while you're in there, along with the ports and EGR valve. use a shop-vac to get the crud out of the manifold + injector ports before you re-assemble.

THANK U Bushou, excellent video instruction. My first time to change Accord fuel filter. I ordered 14mm flare & 19mm wrench from JBToolSales. I had to use genuine Honda fuel filter for 96 Accord. WARNING to viewers Oreilly MicroGard did NOT fit filter bracket. I could not fit Kobalt 19mm wrench under banjo bolt bracket of WIX or Napa ProSelect filters.

Bushou, I was wondering if you might have an idea about this problem I'm having. My Accord (97 F22B1 Manual) runs perfectly fine when it's cold, and immediately after warm up, but the warmer the engine gets the worse the idle gets. It gets as low as 500-400 RPM on the Tach, causing very bad vibrations. I checked for Vacuum leaks, couldn't find any. Any ideas?

Try removing the bracket bolt and unhook the lower portion of the bracket from the hole in the body. You can then pull the filter up a bit to get more clearance to grip the flare nut. I've just learned to contort myself in weird ways to deal with engineering nightmares like this.

I have a 2006 Accord that has had terrible hesitation issues since I've owned it. The hesitation seems to be worse when the engine is cold and i'm slightly accelerating. Once I kick it down the fuel pressure increases and the problem stops. I have had the injectors cleaned and have replaced the plugs but nothing has helped. So I figured it must be fuel filter. Is the 2006 similar to this video? Is there only one filter? thanks for any suggestions.

Thanks for the video! Just had to replace a fuel injector and wanted to change the fuel filter as well. What a screwed up piece of engineering that fuel filter is! A part that needs to be replaced on a consistent basis, shouldn't be that hard of a job! The injector was a much easier process.
