Honda EU 6500 is surging problem. I hope this video helps other who have had a problem with this generator surging in eco mode. I first thought it was a gas problem and tried to fix if with sea foam and cleaning the carburetor bowl and jets with no luck. I had installed a trickle charge cord on the battery and thought I'd just leave the battery cover off. However the cover need to be on as you'll see in the video.

You sir, are a life saver!!!! Thank you! Note to anyone who ran across this video; Whether it's surging on ECO mode on or off, it still needs the battery cover ON the unit to cure the surging. Even with no load, with ECO mode off... mine was surging. After a half a can of sea foam... I saw this video, and WHA LA! Problem solved (since I had the battery cover off to attach a different 'tender' during my troubleshooting). THANK YOU!!!!!!

Just bought one today with 4 hours on it😍. The owner said it had a surging problem, and demonstrated it with the battery cover off. Needless to say, I got a heck of a deal!

I was looking for a video for rebuilding my carb, and ran across this video. I hadn't used my generator for awhile and had to jump it because of a dead battery. I experienced the surging problem and assumed carb because the gas was new. The door being off was the problem! Thank you for the video.

Nice video, thanks. Later I found in page 88 of the owner manual this "Never operate the generator without the battery maintenance cover in place, as poor engine and generator performance will result" The reason is that behind the battery is the generator air intake located.

Thank you SOOO MUCH!! Our power was shut off, and I REALLY needed the generator to work! After the unit started surging, I checked the air filter, oil quantity, etc. and was about to break out the manual to try and figure out how to adjust the idle. Luckily, I watched your video! Within 2 minutes, the problem was solved. You are a life saver!!

Thank you, my battery was dead so I pulled it out and pull started it. The cover was off( who would have thought it mattered) and it was surging. Your video came up first on a quick search. Ran out to the garage, attached the cover and it was immediately fixed. I assumed a carb prob. Thanks again

Oh My GOD, that was the problem. Thanks so much for creating this video. I went back and found in the owner's manual that indeed that little battery cover door has to be on or poor performance will result.

Thank you so much. I just pulled the carb and cleaned twice and was still doing the same thing. I also had my battery low so the cover had been off. I thought I would check RU-vid for a video to help troubleshoot. You solved the issue! Thanks!

Thanks for your video!!! I was jumping a weak battery and had the cover off. My 6500is surged exactly as you described. Problem solved as soon as I installed the cover. Terrific Video!

Thanks for sharing!!! Went to Honda dealer and asked what the problem could be and dealer told me I had to "rebuild" the carb. You saved me from having to take apart the carb. Thanks again for sharing👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼

The dealer knew what it was, he wanted to charge you for a carb cleaning.

your are a live saver, could not get this to run, was going to drain fuel again, i had the batter cover off, put it back on and not it runs! i cannot believe that worked, thank you for the video

Thank you!!! My EM5000is generator wouldn't start due to bad gas sitting in the carb too long. The battery was also dead, so I jumped it with my NOCO lithium jumpstarter. After cleaning the carb, it fired up but was running rough and surging. I assumed it was a bad carb and took it all apart and cleaned it again, same problem. Came across your video and BAM! Back in business. I even called two Honda dealers in my area describing the problem and neither mentioned making sure the access panels were installed. This should be in the troubleshooting section of the manual! Shame on Honda for not explicitly stating this in the manual. Thanks again for sharing, much appreciated.

Wow that does make a difference! Would have never thought. Just tore carb out and cleaned it and didn't help a thing but when i did this exact thing to my generator it ran perfectly THANKS FOR THE VIDEO

THANK YOU ! ! ! I was checking my battery if it had been sitting for a while and left the cover after I ran it for a while .. replaced the batter cover and it smoothed out ... again, thanks for that tip ..

Wow, crazy. I have done so much carb work and fuel draining to solve this problem, and never would have guessed it was this cover. Thank you so much. The interwebs and RU-vid save the day...hopefully. I just have to reassemble it. I just finished cleaning the carb for the second time, and was going to research the solenoids that go on the top.

Yep, reassembled it, and no pulsing. The air intake is just behind the battery. I am thinking that cover helps to create a bit of a vacuum in that chamber. Nice find.

same thing happens on all my 6500is units. its amazing how finely tuned they are that the battery cover has that effect on them.

OH MY GOD! I just did a complete cleaning and gasket change on the carb for this very reason. In fact the Honda Shop Manual says to have all access panels on when running the generator but they don't say why. Can't wait to try putting the covers on and seeing if mine will work smoothly again. The difference with mine is that it surges under no load.

Yes I discovered that by accident, it wasn't running right and I had a dead battery so I put the cover back on after I took the battery out and it started running great.

Also, if you get sick of dealing with the expensive YTZ14S battery issues, and switch to an external battery, you will need to block the vent holes in the battery door. The battery blocks a significant amount of air flow in the battery compartment. I switched over to a slightly larger external Interstate battery tied in via a connectorized cable. The Interstate battery was $29 versus $137.

Same thing happened to me. But my battery was stolen. I figured it may need the cover on it but that didn't helpuvh. I ended up putting tape over the holes and that helped a little. Do I'm wondering if it also needs the battery in it.

Says right in manual to not run with door off. You would have to see for yourself but the enclosure has a tremendous amount of suction to cool the motor and generator stator and sound proofing.with this door open will disturb the air pressure for the fuel injection no carb. You can run the trickle charge plug through the vent no worries. When your motor surges it's running lean. Either not enough fuel or too much air....in this case too much air. I use premium with Startron fuel stabilizer in it...always. I'm a little disappointed that this model doesn't have a fuel shutoff. I'm making a fuel transfer kit to evacuate the unused fuel when storing for obvious reasons. Also to be able to fill from one of my vehicles if needed easily. Gave my father my gas tapper . I also got Amsoil break_in oil for air cooled engines to break it in too. Ill be running Amsoil for long haul too. Just ordered a 7/16" Pewag security chain don't forget that for the next outage...thieves can hear a smooth running EU from long ways...

My eu6500 is fuel injected says in the manual and brochure says it's the first honda genetic to be fuel injected to keep consumers from having fuel issues as you would with carborator. You could have an eu6500 that is not injected it would not have "is" important to distinguish between the two models. My father has the eu6500 carborator model.

Yes this is your standard GX390. Not the motor I have on this one. I've got a Honda North Star 8000 that uses this carburetor. Like I mentioned earlier I do not have any plans on modifying the fuel line for my new EU 6500 is. If Honda things to fuel injection solves the ethanol issue I will wait and see. Always use fuel stabilizer. Cheers

i have a 7000 almost the same problem..i changed my air filter and move the plastic where it sucks the air..i didnt notice it was literally on the battery i pulled the plastic like 3 inches back problem solved....

I happened to hook up a battery charger and slacked on doing my monthly generator run to charge battery. When I tested again without replacing the cover it surged, I changed spark plug, seafoamed, cleaned and then replaced carburetor air jet thingy and was looking on RU-vid to see how to clean fuel filter screen when I finally saw this post. Instant fix! I wish your post had ranked higher in search results (or maybe I just stumbled on exactly the way to search). Thx!

I'm totally inexperienced in this but I was gifted this generator. It needs gasoline but after a few times starting it with the key, it seems that the battery has died. The instructions say to charge it but how? Also what type of gas do I use?

Open the battery compartment, unhook the rubber tie down, unscrew the cables, pull out the battery and go buy one just like it. I use regular gas in mine. Good luck

keep a battery maintainer on it and your battery will last long time. Run it every 3 months for like 15 min, just to keep everything moving.

I have an older 6500 without battery start, and it surges just like the one in the video. I cleaned the carb, jets, etc, and it still surges at idle. I need to put about 4KW load on it to make the surging stop. Any ideas, anybody??

+Keith Keith Yes. it has to do with the EU6500 design. The air box intake is right behind the battery. If it takes in to much air the generator runs to lean and will surge. The new EU7000 fuel injected model has a redesigned air box. No such problem on that model.

+thermax292 Its not a knockout for a trickle charge its a knockout for a remote starter to plug in. From what I understand the remote starter plugs in snug not leaving much room for airflow. I ran a trickle charger cord right through one of the slots on the front battery door without having a problem. Its a battery tender plus cord that's flat.

I believe you, But the logic behind this makes no sense. How does it know the cover is off? There are no sensors involved with the battery door.

Your absolutely right, it doesn't make sense. That's why I uploaded the video for guys like us that use logic to fix stuff, in this case if you use logic you won't stand a change. Most be a very controlled air flow to the carb or something.

well, I checked mine out. it does exactly like yours does. I also opened up the side covers , 1 at a time and also both side doors. The side doors do not have an effect on the surging. The front battery cover does have small slots in it for air. I see nothing that would cause this issue. I want to try 1 more thing though.... I wonder if it is light that somehow messes it up. I cant see it being air issue. I want to test this in the dark and see if it surges than.... maybe there is some sort of light sensor in there to "tell" it the cover is off. If you get a chance to test this in total darkness before I can, let me know what you find.

If you look behind the battery there is the air flow inlet to the air box and when you take the battery cover off it messes up the air flow
