Kei cars like these, are better engineered and built than basically any merc, bmw or audi, and in 30 years it'll still be be running. TONS of keicars in New Zealand thanks to our Liberal grey import scene. I'd buy either of them. Try and get my hands on a Mugen N-Box hehe.

I recently purchased a 2019 Spacia Gear as a “temporary car” while my century was on its way from Japan to Sydney. Within 2 days, it was obvious we were going to keep both cars. The Spacia is the happiest little car we’ve ever owned. Everyone smiles when it’s around. My family love it. It’s incredibly practical, and fun in silly ways. I used to drive a 911, and this gets 10x more attention and questions that the Porsche. My kid has named it “Bob” and my wife, who gives exactly zero shits about cars, legitimately has grown attached to it. Buy one!

I own an N-Box in Sydney; great as a daily driver around the city. There's so much room in these that I ended up importing a bed frame/kit built specifically for the N-Box from Japan and go car camping every month or so. Just a tip that if anyone should import these keis that they should always get the turbo version, the difference between an NA and a turbo variant is literally day and night.

i've driven some underpowered slow 4 cylinder cars/trucks from japan in my time but i gotta say my 2013 nbox custom wagon is faster than those. i live in japan and purchased my nbox with 70,000 km for 6k usd. for them? I see so many nboxes on the japan mainland but here in okinawa they're less common. One thing i notice with kei cars here is that they like to flip over in crashes. we have roads that are paved with coral mixed into the road tar and when it rains it gets quite slppery and i see a lot of accients

@@YoureNowOnTV The frame I got was from MGR Customs in Japan; they make bed kits/frames for quite a few cars (not limited to keis). The good thing is the entire thing can be assembled in 10-15minutes, and requires no drilling or taking apart anything. Its very sturdy and fits perfectly around the interior edges, and comes with padding protection for the foot of the frame so it won't damage the car interior. The only down side is that importing the thing is quite expensive as its bulky and has a bit of weight to it (frame is all metal and boards are thick)

@@ReDriven Yeah some garages are tiny! The only thing though with Kei cars: they suck going up mountains. Which, Japan is like 60% mountainous. I just came back from Japan after a 4 week vacation. The first thing I noticed when I got back here to Tasmania was all the huge cars on our roads. Why? Kei cars nail it ! We need to put pressure on Honda and Suzuki to import these so people can get off the SUV band wagon. SUV's your time is up, Kei cars, welcome to Australia!. I sat in the back of two Kei cars and the experience was awesome. I was smiling so much and laughing that my Japanese friends thought I was loopy. Again, Suzuki and Honda (And Subaru and all the other Kei car manufacutrers) BRING THESE TO AUSTRALIA !!!! PLEASE !!!!

@@sportsonwheelss It's an ecconomic not political issue as far as I understand here in Australia. Car manufacturers only want to sell what the market is buying the most of. We used to have Kei cars in Australia. They sadly usually got panned by idiot journalists who couldn’t see the practicality and joy in them. They were ridiculously misunderstood. Had a few Mira TRXX builds and absolutely loved them. Some of the best vehicles I’ve ever experienced. Currently, only the Ignis and Jimny are close relatives to fully imported Kei cars here. Both are wider body than the actual Kei versions and have 1.2 and 1.5 NA engines respectively. Kei cars have always been a bit bonkers and I’m all for us fully embracing them! "Journalists" covering the auto industry, if they work for outlets that rely on auto manufacturer advertising, are compromised. There's more money usually to be made in more expensive models. Banging the drum for vehicles not sold in the market or at the low end of the market doesn't make the automakers all that happy. Even if they sell that kind of vehicle. In the US, many auto "Journalists" don't even own cars. They get loaners from the makers. They will continue to get loaners from the makers as long as they keep the makers happy. Also, toss in model reveals. Many times at nice places with nice accommodations for a few days. With good food.

You could take small vehicles like this, upgrade them with a 1.0L engine and some more sound deadening and they would be usable to like 75% of the drivers in the world. No one really needs a daily driver car that can do over 160 kph to travel from point A to B.

660cc with a turbo and a decent overdrive gear is already good enough imho. This car sits at under 3000rpm at highway speeds, that's plenty good enough. I actually sort of own that. I have an Opel Agila which is just a Suzuki Wagon R+ that Opel licensed and changed basically just front grill and engine. And that Suzuki Wagon R+ I hear is based on some Kei car. It is a little bit wider and longer and has 1.0 or 1.2l engine. Mine is the 1.2 and it is a tiny rocket that takes all the stresses of narrow roads with incompetent SUV drivers on them or parking in a city and turns it into fun. I can't even cound how many times I had a bigger car behind me slam on the brakes because I comfortably went at speed through a gap they didn't want to risk or how many times several cars in front of me pass up on a possible parking spot as being too tight and I just drive into it nose first. My car is 22 years old and I have no idea what to replace it with when I eventually have to. There are no left-hand-drive Kei cars for us in Europe.

I still have no idea why the Japanese manufacturers don't import Kei vehicles into the UK officially. Our cramped congested roads and sky-high insurance costs are basically the ideal market for these cars to eat up the small car segment with their great feature for price ratio and heaps of character, versatility and variety. It's the same story with the big vans. Alphards and Elgrands are really popular here with large families and as private taxis. They're really missing a beat by not just converting the speedo to read in MPH, adding 5-10% to their reasonable prices and then shipping them here and having them in dealerships. Even past that, manufacturers with bases here could just make these cars locally and skip the cost/exchange rate nonsense.

I bought a 2019 Spacia hybrid AWD with just under 30,000ks on it a few weeks ago and have done almost 2000kms in it in that time. I'm constantly surprised at just how good it is. It's my daily. It has replaced a large 4 door sedan and a Suzuki Carry van and does as good or better than both. I've taken it from Sydney to Gerringong NSW a couple of times and it went up steep Mount Ousley at the 80kph limit on cruise control without even trying. My only gripes are the cruise control can only be bumped up to 107kph at most which can be fun on the 110kph freeway in the mornings, and it does move around a bit in crosswinds being a tall lightweight box. Other than that it's actually a blast to drive and the power button actually works. I love the way it looks, the way it drives, I just love it! 10/10 would buy again.

I also really liked those electrically operated passenger sliding doors and the cargo space with the rear seats down was truly impressive. I'm really tempted to import one of those, but since I live in the Netherlands where we drive on the right, preparing it to pass MOT might require some work as the direction of the headlight beam needs to be adjusted.

I’ve have a 2021 Suzuki Spacia Custom Hybrid for over a year now and absolutely love it, amazing vehicle. It’s true there are so shady companies in the grey market but after a comprehensive search I settled on Iron Chef Imports, they were fantastic. I love my K car 🚗

I've been to Japan a few times and rented kei cars and loved them, i even had a 4WD option when I'm Hokkaido. I'd buy one, but they are probably a bit small than I require currently. The issue with grey imports is the reluctance mechanics have with working on them. I was looking into a Delica D5 when I came across your videos, the Vellfire one made me think your workshop might be interested but the response when I enquired was you avoid them where possible. Which is fine, but it left me questioning if buying a grey import was worth the trouble. Very tempting forbidden fruit.

My wife and I have a 2022 N-Box custom turbo in Sydney and it is hands down the most practical, fun car I've ever owned. EASILY keeps up with freeway traffic due to the torque of the turbo motor and costs $45 a fill with 400KM range. We imported it ourselves with 126KM on the clock for the same (landed and complied )cost of a base model Corolla. It does seem to upset the knuckle dragging bogan tradie demographic though but that's "Straya" for you....

Wow... I'm blown away. Here in Kuching there is a few already on the road, it very expensive considering the engine capacity and it's size... between 125K to 138K all also from grey import, I'm personally never even test drive any of these not to mention ever sat inside it and check on all the interior. Watching this video and the detail introduction and survey on this car... Again, I'm blown away. The nimble engine capability, the surprisingly spacious interior, the features and etc... no wonder the price is expensive. If I have the money, I would buy both. Why? Coz it's just cute, unique, economical, practical and very low maintenance.... Wow!

Thanks for a great video!!! I may be moving to Japan soon, and haven’t found any videos on its 4wd system! Not sure if your tests were, but with it being so light I wonder how they’d fare with snow/slushy/sandy/mud situations. Any opinions from you or anyone out there? Many Thanks!

If dealers here were importing them and supporting them I would 100% go for it. Otherwise though, eh... I really don't fancy the hassle when something goes wrong.

For years we are being controlled by dealers specifing what cars we can buy and owe. Thanks to the importers who give us a wider choice. Of course there are drawbacks, at least we can try something else in life which we have only one, so take your pick. I bought a toyota alphard 8 years ago and have been using it daily for all purpose WHAT A VAN! I am now targeting this suzuki spacia which in my opinion wins in all areas , cf the small cars choice selling in Australia

Yep would love one of these. Touch points are important. If you are using this everyday would it ruin you for cheaper interiors? I also really like the space and feeling of space in the VW beetle when I test drove that. I got that feeling when watching this video.

Having been the proud owner of a Suzuki Alto 1.0 and a Honda Brio 1.2 sedan, i must say they are both FANTASTIC cars. Neither gave me a single day's problems in the 100k odd kms ive driven each. So i know the reliability of each brand. And with the south african fuel price now at ZAR26 per litre, these Kei cars would simply be awesome.

I have Mitsubish Outlander PHEV with 2.1ton weight. The Nissan Sakura weight 1.2 ton and both has the same 20kwh battery. Outlander runs only 70km and Sakura more than 150km. I think the Kei EV will be the most popular in Japan, instead of EV with more than 2ton will be exterminated.

With turbo and AWD and huge interior configurations , they are a no brainer . With Mitsubishi ,Nissan ,Suzuki, Honda versions ,innovation is paramount . Owned a Daihatsu Move for years, amazing vehicle, and i also looked into buying a New Tanto in metallic purple . Seriously ,i once bought a new lazyboy in the box, wouldn't fit the Eclipse or my BF Fairlane , but fitted in the Move.

The Honda N-Box is the one I would go for, like the look of the N-Box Black+Style (White with the Black trim), want something different, had a grey import in the past, I just love the whole idea of how the Kei packaging , I am getting on a bit, but still young at heart, want small, easy to get into, auto, with creature comforts which is cheap to road and I will be camping in it as part of the fun aspect, this ticks a lot of Boxes for me (sorry about the pun lol) and I just love the look, Japan is also on my bucket list to.

Mate best review I have ever seen on these 2 Kei cars you certainly no your shit - i was going to import a Honda N box last week from the JP auctions but as I could not get a 4wd custom version in the 2 tone red and black at my price I ended up buying 2 Daihatsu Hijets but once these have landed in the UK in January I will 100% be buying both of these models , Great review, cheers..

I owned a Suzuki Stingray back in Sri Lanka with the same drivetrain except for the exterior bits. Got it brand new as a gift from my parents. It had an issue with the belt adjuster, which indeed was a cheap fix too, the replacement of the part fixed it. Other than that pretty reliable, economical and practical in your day to day driving needs.

Honda could (and should) do this in the USA. They could throw an N-Box type of body on top of the Honda Fit chassis and engine, kinda like how the Scion xB is just a Toyota Echo underneath. it might be slightly bigger than the real N-Box but it would still scratch that itch for those of us stateside.

I would absolutely buy either one of these. I've had a fascination with Kei cars since I was like 13 years old and read an article about them in Automobile Magazine (or Road and Track, I forget) that featured a photo of a Pajero Mini next to a full-sized Chevy Blazer, making it look laughably tiny. I envy you in Australia for being able to import these pretty much brand new because we have to wait 25 years to legally run one in the US. But that doesn't mean I haven't been perusing local classified ads for a Pajero Mini or Sambar van just for funsies. :) Oh and BTW I absolutely guffawed at Kevin Spacia.

Been looking at these for a while.. I have also being looking at the D5.. the Key cars appeal for their frugal nature and most likely aren't going to cost as much to run overall.. they are cute in real life, but I am looking at the D5 as it's got more space to cart things, can go camping for a night or two and would attract a better resale price. so yeah, I'd buy a Kei car!!
