Honda Pilot: Engine Misfires, Skips & Runs Rough

In this video I have a look at a Honda Pilot that came in with a misfire. Seeing cylinder 4 was the culprit I wanted to go right for the most common on the 3.5's (The dreaded oil burning/fouled plug). However we stuck to our diagnostic plan and went right to the actual problem. Don't get side tracked based on pattern failures. -Enjoy!

Yeah working in heavy machinery lab, we noticed holding and moving the wire harness's around that only some of the systems worked and some didn't. "Front Probing" and opening up the socket contacts caused significant intermittent system operation. 742 sockets removed and reterminated fixed the intermittent system operation. So we used a octopus type test lead with all the proper gauges, pin and sockets and never had another "Front Probe" socket problem. Great video as always thanks you.

Just went through this on my odessy, 301 codes... i've always thought it was weird when mechanics do an automatic full tune up, or suggest a timing belt and water pump before opening the hood.. had a guy price out a timing belt before looking at the car when i complained about 301 codes... i looked into it on video's like yours, and was able to eliminate all the culprits valve adjustment, did it, pretty easy, exhaust was tight so good thing egr check, vacuum leaks checked, plenum seals checked, injectors cleaned, pvc checked, iac cleaned egr port cleaned, throttle body cleaned, timing belt was spot on both cams, and crank end, good tension, it had been done at 180k ..tensioner was good checked.. i swapped coils around, got the same code, finally got some donor coils and found that 5 and 3 were bad, runs great now..spent 100 bucks, and some time The point is the Video's you guys post put cash back in our pockets, they empower the guy with a good mind, and some tools and time, and protect us from predatory mechanics..I call it Bullshit Armor, thanks to all you guys who post diagnostics, keep up the good work, i hope you are so busy that your turning business away. Stay away from big big box store shops (eg Canadian Tire here in Canada), worked for them and profit is their main driver.. full tune ups on v8's as a starting point. I even got in trouble for warning a few customers who were short on cash to consider other options , when i knew they were being fleeced.. seniors on a fixed income are preyed upon relentlessly .. The internet and you guys have returned a lot of that power to the consumer.. good work, keep it up.. !!!

Yeah, you gotta take the easier ones when you can. Like my '07 Galant where after finally doing the testing do to a voltage drop, a year, and found power over the door lock fuse. Pulled the fuse out, looked ok, put it back in, heard the door locks engage after a few seconds, and then engage a second time and, kow, its been fine. Car starts much easier and no battery failures. Thanks for sharing.

Hey Eric This reminds me of a vehicle I had. 1994 Nissan Sentra. I bought it off a friend for 200 dollars and said the thing would run for 20 minutes and quit. We took a scope out to look at the ignition and put a nail in the back of the connector to the distributor and used that to hook up the scope. It didn't quit. So as long as I had that nail in the connector the car ran fine. LOL Good Job!

Watching your videos makes me wish I had known about them when I owned a 1985 Subaru sedan. Was a nice care I found I could keep it running with starting fluid through the throttle body and the injector seemed to be putting fuel in but I couldn't watch to see the spray pattern. I had little knowledge of the evap system on it and couldn't hardly find the correct pressure it was supposed to be at but I think there may have been more than one issue. The aftermarket fuel pumps on it rarely put out adequate pressure and at the time I couldn't afford the $400 fuel pump from the dealer. I think if I had still owned it and with what you provide knowledge wise I could have solved it and had a nice running vehicle that was reliable.

the tabs that hold the pin to the connector body are called wings. There are single wing pins (which you just encountered) double wing pins, and even some 4 wing pins, which are a real pleasure to remove. They actually make pin removal tools, but each mfg has its own tool, so it gets a bit crazy trying to have every pin tool
