Let's have a look at this 2007 Honda Ridgeline 3.5 that was brought into the shop with a "rough running" complaint. It is a low mileage engine (79k) so it should be interesting to see what we find.

He leaves with dealer they make him buy new flywheel and when he picks it up it makes more noise. Yeah sure that dealer tech is a genious! I'm not a mechanic by any means, but My Honda Ridgeline had a misfire in cylinder 5. I decided to change out all my spark plugs at the same time as changing out 5. Well 5 was a blow out and it needed to be rethreaded. I bought a rethreading kit, followed some videos and crossed my fingers. I couldn't find a way to get a good tap on the insert so I figured I'm not gonna push my luck and get it to a garage. They told me a I would need a whole new motor but I just didn't believe it. I came across your videos regarding removing the Head and getting it machined and so I took it to another shop. Guess what I didn't need a new motor, I told him what I learned from your videos and what I tried to do and I think he appreciated how much I understood and love my Truck. So I just wanted to say thanks for your help :)

@thekingsilverado9004
@thekingsilverado9004 5 лет назад
Jax sometimes just WELDING a TAP into a SOCKET will get ya by on work like that and alot of times they sell an insert KIT with the TAP & the GOOP to glue it into a head and you are done outside of people not having enough commonsense they would keep blowing air into the cylinder and have commonsense to have the valves closed at the time they do the process to blow those little shavings back out the cylinder port... I had an Isuzu many years ago it was my favorite vehicle I swear to god it had a special extra powerful motor... I dropped it off at fire stone tire store for 2 new tires for the upcoming winter... It ran sour right after I picked it up and raised hell at the counter about it the very next day... By the time I got it home and the weekend is when found someone loosened up 2 spark plugs one was nearly blown out from combustion heat and stress due to my wife being a teacher.. I bought the kit with the tap at a Napa and now days when my vehicles are being worked on I stay there and make em get it done in front of me standing in the service bay watching em... If they tell me I can't be there and watch I tell em to give me my keys.... Most people when they pick up a vehicle from a service center like Fire Stone or a Jack Williams it's always at the end of your work day and theirs and if when ya got that problem it's a morning issue and you own the issues and the problems that go with it... Never ever take a good running car or truck and just drop it off you will be sorry... Many people will know what I mean with the truth I just offered y'all...

The times I didn’t have been either disappointing or expensive - usually both. Eric O’s are rare. I stopped going to shops almost completely in 1994ish. Took a Chevy citation (60K miles) in for state inspection and exhaust. Drove in fine, came out with broken teeth in the steering gear (rack). I asked them to show me how they found out my rack was bad. They used a five-foot steel pinch bar to ‘test’ it.

Let me understand this right? The nice lady takes a perfectly running Ridgeline into an authorized Honda facility to do a 100,000 service. At 87,000 miles and running OK. And it runs worse after a service? Ding the Tech. for a bad timing mark alignment. It bent a valve, Id bet my season Bengal tickets on that one. If and when Eric O pulls the head, I'll buy cheeseburgers for everyone if that #4 piston doesn't have a hit on it. I'd hire a lawyer if the Dealership balked, and get a new engine as they asserted to the customer. This is BS at it's worst. It's a wonder why people are scared shitless to take their rides to dealerships.

Took the word right out of my mouth! (We are both Roberts so maybe our brains are connected) and the fact that Eric has the ENTIRE thing on VIDEO, the vehicle owner should be contacting Honda American Headquarters ASAP. go right over the Dealers head. Send the video, along with a very detailed write up with all the findings and discovered damage, and give them the choice of either paying for parts and labor of a NEW (NOT USED) engine at the shop of her choice, OR, she will see them, and the dealership in court where she will be going for a whole new vehicle. If they laugh her off the phone, call up the local new station. Most local stations do a "7 on your side" kind of section where they investigate scams and such and try to get people the money back or work done properly that they deserve.

Great, great, video. Always wondered what a leak down test was. Thanks for the lesson. Can't believe the dealer suggested that she scrap a motor with only 80K on it. I picked up a 10-year-old Odyssey EX-L for $500 because the P.O. messed up the timing trying to change the belt so I yanked off both heads and took them to my local head shop. Turned out that EVERY exhaust valve was bent! If the dealer messed up the timing, this Ridgeline might need complete valve jobs on both heads including replacing all 12 exhaust valves. When I finished the job, I put a bright yellow Gates sticker near the timing belt indicating that it had been changed. Took the van to the dealer for the Takada air bag recall where they informed me that despite the yellow sticker indicating that the belt had 8 miles on it, it was time for a new one. You see, they don't actually look under the hood, they just look at their computer and the computer had no record of a timing belt change.

New radiator at 80k? This whole thing smells bad.
@algrayson8965
@algrayson8965 4 года назад
How OLD is the radiator? Mine was just over 10 years old @ 205,000 miles when the top tank SPLIT. The leak was so large that the coolant all blew out in seconds. SO. The thermometer sensor, having no overheated coolant circulation, didn't show any temperature rise. Engine overheated in no time at all. Aluminum block and heads: we know what happens to aluminum engines when they overheat. Blown head gasket(s), warped head(s), warped valves, more bad bad. Since internal repairs to sidewinder V6s mean engine removal, and engine removal means lowering the entire front subframe from the unibody, if I'm going to spend nearly $2,000 on labor, I'm going to put a fresh engine in.

Lesson from this excellent vid: Buy something other than a Honda. I was fortunate enough to own an '84 CRX. That was a beauty little racer until the plastic clips started wearing and one day I observed my "rear bumper" in the street through the rear view mirror. I hadn't banged into anything, but someone must have hit me and upset the delicate connector clip that held the bumper facade in place. After that it was more bad news. I couldn't even find the thermostat and had to pay a garage to do a job I should have been able to do myself. Now I drive a Dodge truck, no great shakes, but it is not a Honda. Thanks for the fine videos.

If I were that lady, I'd be showing the service manager this video and demanding full replacement cost of an engine and of my misdiagnosed spark plugs and a coil. Unbelievable...And if they won't play ball, I'd bombard their Google+ profile with friends' and families' negative reviews. Dealers depend heavily on this review since it's what makes them show up on certain items when you google something, so a poor average review, turns people away. I've had it where I posted a negative review of an experience at an RV dealer when I brought mine in to be repaired and they fouled it up, they replaced my trailer with a model year newer for no charge. That's the way it should be done.

Honda recommends a timing belt service on this model at 60k if you tow, or live in a climate that can reach 0 or 110 degrees. I can tell you from living in Connecticut that salty road conditions and cold temps most of the year can really decrease the lifespan of belts. Even if you are under the recommended milage it is suggested that you change your timing belt every 10 years to make up for that fact that the rubber degrades over time, and with this Ridgeline being at 07 it was close enough.

Why an engine? Pull the head and see how much damage there is. I've seen plenty of engines which have swallowed valves be repairable with new valves and sometimes a new head if the valve seats are messed up. A few chatter marks in the top of the piston isn't the end of the world, just polish them down to prevent a hot spot that would cause pre-ignition.

Eric i dont like to say it BUT incorrect fitting of the timing belt looks like to me. Not a high mileage for a Honda and normally you would'nt expect a failure like that. However lets give the previuos person the benifit of the doubt. Main dealer repair sounds bad. I am dying to see what behind the timing cover. Nice job.

I agree! I feel for the owner of this poor car, you can tell by the fact that she only brought the vehicle to the dealer for service that she cared for this car and at a reasonably low milage their is no reason why this Honda should need an engine. I know you should never assume anything but I would put my money on a dealer tech screwing up and then trying to cover his tracks, instead of manning up and admitting his mistake! The timing (no pun intended) is just too suspicious as all this occurred after a timing belt, none the less another great vid by Eric and the squad over at SMA!

More than likely they didn't manually rotate the crankshaft to feel for resistance. This is SOP for a timing kit job. If you put a wrench on the crankshaft and do a full 720 degrees of rotation all the cylinders/valves will go through their entire range of motion. If at any point in this test you suddenly feel resistance...you know a valve is contacting a piston and you've messed up somewhere and need to back out and start from scratch on getting everything aligned correctly. The Honda dealers service center put on the timing kit and whatever else, bolted everything up and sent the customer on her way. The damage happened before the car even left the bay I'm guessing.

I looked it up - that engine is an interference design and it has a timing belt. My guess is they screwed up putting the timing belt on right and there could be more than just one valve "boogered up" as Eric O likes to say. At the very least both heads need to come off and all the pistons and valves need to be inspected, in my nontechnical opinion. And like the stealership told the lady, it may need a new engine. I would be royally pissed at that stealership in any case. I'd ax ETCG - he was supposedly born in a Honda and was working on Hondas since he was a baby as to what he'd do with this particular engine.

Too bad you didn't drop your borescope down in the hole. Would be nice to know before pulling the head if the valve hit the piston or not. If the valve and piston touched there's only one scenario that would explain that. Then the lady would have some evidence to take back to the Honda dealer.

I was thinking the same thing to see if there is damage to the piston and if a piece was missing or misaligned on the vale. That cam would have helped potentially save me a ton of money when I had to have my Suzuki aerio into Firestone. They charged all together $2366 to get the head machined and replace a coil and spark plugs. Had I had the camera Eric showed I might have been able to try and scrape the piece of spark plug tang off the head and been done with it after using a magnet to fish it out. Small car dealer I went to get the Suzuki from used damaged spark plugs or the previous owner did. One heck of an expense.

@@DarkLinkAD If someone hadn't been monkeying around with Electrical and replacing parts without using proper judgement and reefing on bolts to the point of stripping the heads off to where you need to use a jewelers grinding disc to take them off because nothing else will fit and it didn't have additional issues it would have been an awesome car. I no longer own it. The car would go through mass airflow sensors, O2 sensors, and I think I may have the idea of the main problem after I sold the car but I couldn't afford to keep throwing parts at it and the shops here were no help at all. I discovered on a trip over the mountains you couldn't get over 35 to 40 miles per hour at high altitude. I am pretty sure the camshaft position sensor which replaced the distributor with the coil on plug design was bad. But without the knowledge and specs to confirm it I gave up and sold the car when it was in good running state. With new O2 and MAF it generally gets about a year or two before it does it again. The cam sensor didn't occur to me till after the sale of the vehicle but had no way to contact the new owner to let them know they may need to have it looked at.

The lady could have given a call to Honda corporate. I've had four Honda's from new. The dealer service experiences are generally good - but then again, that's usually nothing more than simple regular maintenance because they rarely have problems. There's been a few occasions where I've felt the need to go around the dealer and talk to Honda corporate. I was always satisfied with the end result. In one case a $5000 dealer quote for new transmission turned into a free used transmission from Honda corporate and $1500 install bill from dealer. In another case a dealer refusal to do a repair under warranty was turned around. And my favorite - I called Honda's customer support to explain to them that if the @#$%^#@ XM radio people ever contact me again to try to sell me a satellite radio subscription then I am never buying another Honda again since it must have been Honda who gave XM my contact info to begin with... and amazingly, I never heard from the XM radio people again!
