Hello everyone! Today I decided it was finally time to tear into my power antenna off my 1996 Acura Integra. And all I can say is, WOW! There was some seriously cool stuff in here, way more than what I was expecting.
I don't know how many of you will be interested in this type of video, but I figured I'd put it up anyway.
As an update to the Integra build series, I will be coming out with more content soon enough. I'm gathering some parts and waiting on some good weather. Expect more soon! Thanks for watching!

You took apart everything except the actual antenna. I was hoping this video would show and explain the mechanism behind how telescopic antenna extends and retracts.

finally, got the answer of power antenna mechanism from your video, thanks a lot. that's a long component chain for car industry.

10:11 you're nailing it every step of the way, don't doubt yourself so harshly, that said, it's almost never a bad idea to double check something, this being no exception 10:45 wait no, you were right on the money The educated guesses you're making as you reverse engineer the motor's electromechanisms are ALL on the money. Even your confusion over the brushes and commutation ring inverting the DC into AC would be accurate if the motor had only 3 coils rather than 10 Though then again I guess it is still ac, it just so happens to invert the DC power into 10 phase AC. This would be made obvious if you were to modify the motor so that the permanent magnets were in the rotor and the electromagnets were in the stator (google: “BLDC motor” for a better explaination)

Good video, I like to see the inside of units so i know what to expect and how things work. I have to replace an antenna this week and this helps. Thanks

The thing that first electrical component you removed is called an encoder. It tells the computer exactly how many times the motor has spun. This makes sure it turns in and off when it counts the right number of turns.

Hi ! you mean this black box?? or this plate with three kind of sliding sensors ??? becase I had to replace my mast ... the problem is that with the new mast my antenna still tries to go "to far away" and I can hear griding noise.. same thing on the way down .. but then I can hear 6 click insead of grinding noise ..ANY POSSIBILITY TO CALIBRATE IT ????

My antenna just developed a problem where it repeatedly goes up and down by itself even with the radio turned off and the ignition key removed. I was shocked when I looked outside in the driveway and saw my antenna slowly going up and down by itself. It goes fully up and then fully down. Any idea what might cause this problem? For now I've unplugged the connector so it doesn't run my battery dead.

It's NOT an encoder and there is NO computer. It is a simple limit switch and a simple relay. That's it.

Aztec Warrior after 2 years of originally posting this at probably 3am, I 100% agree this is just a simple relay. No idea why I just to the conclusion that it was an encoder. To be fair I just had my first kid and probably has no sleep over 48 hours...

It's perfectly alright to not know what the “weird gear mechanism” is. The mechanism in question is what's known as a geneva mechanism Oh and I *think* that black box is *probably* a relay From a functional standpoint, it's the predecessor to the vacuum tube; the predecessor to the semiconductor transistor It isn't very efficient, but it's a fairly cheap way of controlling a high power circuit. From a mechanical standpoint, it's often quite literally a glorified elctromagnet controlling a spring-loaded mechanical contact switch

Yeah I know it's a lot to read but I'm good at explaining things fairly in depth, but bad at putting things in a cliff-notes format

6:40 IT is NOT "highly compressed" It's just a strong spring. Difference is that a strong spring does not need to be compressed fully to create tension and the bounce back is minimal. So no the spring would not have shot out.

It's a clutch so spindle slips when arial is fully up . prevents motor from overheating.circuit disconnect power

You can remove the pin but you have to press on it at the same time

How does it extend the antenna? That was the only part I was curious about. What are the gears turning that makes it extend?

The black one. He said it in the video, well half way said it since he was guessing. 6:10

hey guys I had to replace my old mast ... the problem is that with the new mast (antenna) ..main mechanism still tries to go "too far away" - I can hear grinding noise on top up... and then 6 clicks while already closed .... long story short ...any option to calibrate this ???? I checked almost everyting ...I took whole mechanism apart like on the vid.. everything looks fine! but I just wont calibrate... :(((

Paweł Myszor did you replace just the antenna? Or the whole assembly? If you replace just the antenna you should be able to feed the new one in there and it will take one or two cycles for it to adjust to its correct place
@pawemyszor6620
@pawemyszor6620 6 лет назад
I did replace just the antenna mast ...the problem is it just wont adjust... while going up at the end I hear grinding noise for 3 seconds ... while closing I can hear 6 clicks after its already hidden... I dismounted and feed new mast like 10 times.. :( .... somehow it cant adjust itself I dont know why.. I tried to play a bit with the mechanism but nothing --- at the end it always makes 3 sec grind up , and 6 clicks while already closed - from some reason it thinks it should go out more and then tries to hide more ... or other way ( I dont know on which way sensor is checking the position.. or maybe both ? - anyways it doing it wrong and it will damage my new mast as well.... )

@@pawemyszor6620 did you ever figure what was causing the problem or how to fix it?

ivan patino hey .. i did not sadly .. i think it is problem with the pcb and sensors
@AztecWarrior69_69
@AztecWarrior69_69 4 года назад
@@pawemyszor6620 The is no sensors just limit switches. I am going to guess that the plastic rack(the long plastic with teeth on it) broke, and you left a piece of the broken one on there. I know you said you took it apart but you could easily miss that.

Anybody know if the metal tube he was trying to pull out is actually replaceable? Or would I have to buy a new assembly all together

Metal tube is replaceable yes, however if that tube is corroded into the plastic than good luck. here is a complete guide to repairing it. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5x3XM81yvtw.html
