I've repaired more Honda power antennas than I can count. Each one of them is a little different. They all seem to present their own challenges. In this video I cover just about every contingency when repairing one of these units.
I can't stress enough how it may be best to go for a cheap whip antenna replacement. It can save you a lot of time and headache. If you have your heart set on a working power antenna in your Honda, this video should help.
There’s an extended version of this video available where I show how to power up the antenna on the bench and put the interior of the car back together here:

The best how-to video I've seen. You didn't over complicate the problem but you covered the things that one might run into and showed how to overcome them. Now, to get a whip antenna replacement.

Excellent step-by-step instructions. I used your video to help me install a new retractable antenna on my 1995 Acura Integra, which had been stuck mid-way for several years, but the motor works fine. I came across a few unforeseen glitches, but revisited your video, executed, and now it works perfectly. If I'm ever in your town I will use you as my mechanic.

Thank you! I just replaced the antenna in my '92 Legend! The white plastic piece at the base of the metal mast was longer than the stock antenna and I actually trimmed that plastic piece and the I trimmed the length of the notched cord a bit to get a perfect fit. So, your suggestion to compare the old and new antenna was very significant factor to getting this to work.

The sensor you pointed at is actually a DPDT Relay that reverses the polarity of the motor when it receives a 12V signal from your Head Unit telling it to raise the antenna. There is a plastic disc with metal contact points inside that rotates with the antenna & plastic assembly. This is connected to the relay and its purpose is to physically cut off the power at 2 positions, when the antenna reaches full height or completely retracted.

HA! I just had to do this to my '93 Volvo 940 because I failed to heed your warning at the end of this video. I was SO pissed! Had alot on my mind ... and hitting the antenna button wasn't left in memory ... Very similar designs, although the Volvo was MUCH simpler to remove. Car has been in New England it's entire life, and everything came apart easily .. except for the aluminum part, which I gave up on and left - didn't need to remove it anyway. I ended up swapping the entire lower assembly from my parts car because I didn't know how the antenna itself came out of the unit - now I do! Thanks for that! I assume this one is the same as the Honda - I'll have to look into that for future reference. I did have to free up a stuck segment of the used antenna. I dunked it in used motor oil (LOL) and yanked on it with pliers. It worked! I wiped the excess off, of course. Need to get me some of that silicon spray. I lubed the plastic gear strip, and the gears from the motor with John Deere Corn Head Grease. Stuff is nice and thin, and thixotropic (acts like a gear lube when in motion). Seems to be working for now. We'll see!

Thank you so much dude! Screw the haters... side note: you clarified so many things for me. I just spent 25$ on a replacement antenna and motor form the junk yard and two hours later to still have one antenna that is broken and one that I completely disassembled. It’s funny tho because of the corrosion I didn’t even know about the metal tube inside after all that I didn’t even get the correct diagnosis (oh unless you count that this is a pain in the ass)... and of course I found your video after the fact. You really cleared it up for me, thanks.

Well, everyday you learn something new... When I replaced the mast on my 2001 Volvo S40 back in May, I completely disassembled the power antenna and installed it retracted, and that was a bit of a mess.... The silicone spray tip is a good one too.

After going to three different stores, Home Depot, AutoZone and Harbor Freight, I got a kit for under $10 at Harbor and used the easy out tool and the metal sleeve came out! Thanks. It's working like a charm now. Also, anyone else thinking of replacing the mast, don't get it from eBay! I did that even after hearing someone on RU-vid saying don't buy a cheap eBay mast, he was right, it would not work and I had to ship it back for a loss of $3.50. We ordered the mast that was an official Acura part and it went right in. The metal sleeve was the hardest part.

This video make me want to give it another shot at replacing my mast. It is very cool and unique to have a power antenna mast that actually works nowadays, heh. I tried a couple years ago, but it was with a non oem mast, and it just clicked inside the motor, the gears wouldn't catch the teeth for whatever reason. So I bought the plug to cover the hole in the quarter panel, and installed a window mount power antenna behind my rearview mirror. The reception isn't as good as the antenna's was. My antenna broke when it tried to extend and my car was glazed in ice. It had lasted a long time too, dang it.

Great video. I've fixed plenty of these but I find the easiest method is to just pick one up from a junk....excuse me... recycling yard. One tip though. If the antenna on the donor vehicle is extended at all, walk away. When the vehicle was turned off, the antenna should have retracted. If it didn't, that means that either the mast has a slight bend or kink in it or the plastic track has broken off. Even the slightest bend will prevent the antenna from operating. It has to be just about perfect.

I remember my father's 90 Integra sedan, 92 & 94 Accords all having stuck antenna issues shortly after purchase. The mast would get filthy and then when it retracted, it brought all the dirt into the body. We would wipe the mast clean and apply a little silicone lube and it would be ok again for a little while until it got filthy again.

I have one of these kinds of deals on my '92 Chevy G20, only instead of screws, the motor casing is held closed by clamps. Trying to remove the antenna from the shaft is proving to be quite difficult as it didn't just pull out like yours did, Eric (yes, I know you said yours came super easy). I've yet to open up the motor and find out why its not going back in, but thanks to this video, I can at least say the motor isn't busted, it's just not stopping because the antenna itself never comes back down, nor does it go up. So yeah, gotta get in there and see what's going on.

Nice job. I had to drill out the shaft (in vehicle) very carefully, with a 5/16" - 13/32" bit. Finally got that stubborn little sleeve out of there. Looks like there's a broken piece that won't let the new teeth engage. Am now debating pulling the motor out or putting the fixed type in. Since I have the new mast and the motor works, I'll probably peel the fender liner back and go that route . . . maybe not.

Lol the prelude did get a quick mention. I have a 94 prelude that did have an power antenna but it broke and I replaced it with one of those whip antennas. I think it failed the same way yours did, I could hear the antenna motor turn on every time I shut off the car but the antenna wouldn't move. It did last almost 20 years so I will give it that.

Great video, Eric. It encouraged me to keep at it. Got the metal sleeve out with a 3/8" pipe easy-out. The toothed plastic cable didn't want to pick-up when I tried to thread it in. Pop,pop, pop it said.. So removed the assembly and opened the reel side. No way to feed it without removing the electric motor cover. Spinning the armature and with the help of a small screwdriver I fed the cable into the reel area. By this time the brushes and springs had popped out and were clear of the armature so I chucked the armature into my drill and reeled in the cable. Feeling pretty smart, I put everything back together, correctly I think and installed the assembly into the car. When I turned the ignition on, the antenna retracted - some. Turning off the radio, the antenna extended - some. Not feeling so smart now. Could I have reversed polarity messing around with the armature? Seems like there is only one way to feed the cable onto the geared system...Any thoughts? Otherwise, there is always the whip antenna. Thanks!

To remove the aluminium mast from the housing loosen the screw and apply some heat from a heat gun .The part that is in the housing always has some corrosion which grips the housing.Once removed clean the corrosion off with sandpaper or file and oil it and it will be easy to reinsert.

Great video. I started out wanting to replace the antenna on my 95 Accord. I buggered up the end of the tube threads trying to remove the sleeve at the base of the antenna. Now the replacement antenna sleeve will not go down in the tube. So now I have a good working motor with a bad tube. I dont think its worth the trouble to dig out the tube to replace it. TOAST!

Nice functional antenna again :-D Now here is a silly thought, Connect a small fishtank air compressor to the end of the water drain tube, make it run while the radio is on, it may keep more water out while in the rain. Plus add a propper rubber "O" ring to the antenna top to seal when its down. I did say its silly :).

A little propoxy and the old antenna housing is good as new. Aluminum has some nice anti-corrosive properties in free air, but when it's submerged in water, it might as well be mild steel. I've seen anodized pipe fitting corrode to the point it will hold 20 psi of pressure on one end.

I hate the way those whip antennas look my aftermarket deck pulls FM well enough even with it down & 90% of time I'm streaming music , or listening to my iPod. I love wrenching on this car but something's I can leave broken & be better for it. Like you said a working automatic antenna is a rare thing.
