When I last got a service done, the shop guy said it was done from the top. I'm sure glad you put this up because I was having a hard time trying to get the electronic tray out, wondering why anyone has to do this to replace plugs. I should have looked up RU-vid to start with. Thanks for this video. 👌👍✌️

A few words of CAUTION for people attempting this: the second spark plug boot is VERY difficult to remove. Upon going to change mine I realized that the rubber was already cracked in multiple areas due to the previous owner trying to pull it out in the same way recommended by this video. Ultimately this caused me to have to remove the gas tank, replace the rubber boot connected to the wire and get these plugs changed from above (while this may be a lot more work, I'd recommend this way, you'll avoid scratching the spark plug wells, have much easier access, and not risk having a broken boot and having to spend extra time + $$ on replacement parts.) Again, the boot is very difficult to remove. Another thing, when doing spark plugs use high temp anti-seize compound, not motor oil, the oil will likely burn off from the high temp, and isn't a widely used method. Anti-sieze is a common and trusted go to. Know that it reduces friction by 20%, the the torque spec with it on this goes down to 10.4 ft/lbs. Love your videos Slight, learned a lot from them, and just want to save people the head ache I felt!

Sure thing dude. your feedback will help many I’m sure. As for the anti-seize option… it really depends on trainer I guess. This was a common thing older techs did, Yet it was frowned upon by every instructor I’ve had when I went through school. Yet in my opinion it’s still an option if done sparingly. As a kid my father always used this direction without failure (he’s also a tech). I also agree with you on how easy the spark plugs are when you remove the tank and lower cover. Yet it’s much more work. Thank you so much for sharing your experience in completing this job. I appreciate your time Charles.

Very interested to see you do this. It still looks like a lot of messing around in a small space 😞 Would have liked to see you do a short review of the condition of the plugs you took out, maybe mentioning what to look for as potential signs of trouble. Also interested to see that removing the tank gives you absolutely no advantage when doing this kind of thing. I have prior "history" with cross-threading in an aluminium cylinder head (many, many years ago). So these days I tend to deliberately wind the plug the wrong way until I hear the thread "click" before I start screwing it down. That way I know that the thread has engaged properly. I also get very hyper about any debris going down the socket where the plug goes. Good video, very informative!

No the tank removal doesn’t help… unless you continue the removal of the lower tank cover… (video will be posted of that in the next few weeks, as we continue the tear down to show the valve lash inspection. Stay tuned!!) The spark plugs showed great wear. Although the spec was out. Slight blow by through the plug (common) but overall it was good for a used plug (no signs of coolant, oil or fuel contamination)

Thank you... great video... would you recommend iridium spark plugs or just regular??
@SLIGHT_
@SLIGHT_ Год назад
I personally go with OEM recommendation unless I’m doing engine/tuning work to the bike. If you’re looking for what one is better, the iridium is hands down…they are better at engine starts and is a cleaner spark. Yet in these engines it’s not required. Just note… you’re not gapping these as the electrode is extremely small and you will damage them in that process.

Not a problem dude. As for the balance check.. it’s to confirm spec. In time you’ll need to replace them. 65,000kms on mine… have not needed to replace even one yet. I’m sure next check I will though.

If they are iridium plugs like the 300 do not use that type of gap gauge. Use the wire type only with iridium plugs.

thank you Very helpful Is it okay if I don't remove the tank? (Will any liquid leak if I remove the hose as shown in the video with the tank attached?)

I’ve seen this done without the tank removed. I do it during the major service hence why the tanks off.

Here’s a dumb question but how do you when it’s time to change out the plugs? Again great video!
@SLIGHT_
@SLIGHT_ Год назад
Not a dumb question at all. The plugs are to be replaced every 16,000miles/25,600km as per Hondas manual. There is a bunch of services due at this time. I have made a Playlist on these items to make it easy to follow (still have 3 videos to release, Sunday's at 9;30am EST) follow this link ru-vid.com/group/PL8wCz8T3YolwevBSyPORo3A03ICwn3Bk0&feature=shares

What hose you pulled out? Is it the fuel hose? Need to empty the tank first?
@SLIGHT_
@SLIGHT_ Год назад
The two vent lines? or the fuel line. This tank was full, so no... you don't need it empty. That said, it would be easier to lift/move with a lighter tank.
@riduanjohari137
@riduanjohari137 Год назад
Removing the spark plug at the side beside the big coolant hose, is that the fuel line which you pulled out to get more room to lift up the plug boot?

5/8 socket? I can't get my socket to seat onto the existing spark plugs edit: nvm, the outside diameter of my socket was too big preventing it from being seated on the spark plug
@SLIGHT_

Fair enough. Most “spark plug” sockets are thin walled. If you have access to this it may be easier to use.

… like shown in the video? Or are you talking about replacement for the spark plug socket? Note: the reason I will always recommend the proper socket is… if you drop the spark plug while putting it in you have a good chance of closing that gap. This will cause a misfire and you’ll need to readjust the gap.
