In this video, we are going to talk about the Honda Ridgeline, the leader of the unibody pickup truck trend that is growing in popularity. The Ridgeline is a mid-size truck that offers a smooth ride and a lot of unique features, but it also has some problems that might annoy some buyers. Let’s find out what they are.
*️⃣ 00:00 | Intro
Number6️⃣ 00:32 | Small Cargo Bed and Poor Towing and Payload Capabilities
Number5️⃣ 02:20 | Lowest Ground Clearance of All Pickup Trucks and General Lack of Off-Roading Capabilities
Number4️⃣ 03:52 | Lack of Certain Upmarket Features
Number3️⃣ 04:50 | Subpar Infotainment System
Number2️⃣ 05:44 | A Single Powertrain With Poor Fuel Economy
Number1️⃣ 06:52 | High Price
The Ridgeline is a truck that has some strengths and weaknesses. It has a car-like ride and a host of versatile features that make it more fun and practical, but it also has a high price and poor fuel economy. It has a small bed and limited towing and payload capacities, but it also has a hidden in-bed trunk and a truck bed power outlet. It has the lowest ground clearance of any truck, but it also has a new Trailsport trim that will improve its off-road performance. The Ridgeline is not a perfect truck, but it is a unique truck that stands out from other trucks. Watch the video to learn more about the Ridgeline and its pros and cons.

I drive a 2007 Ridgeline that I bought new and now has over 200,000 miles on it. Most of the negative things noted in this video would be true of my truck, but for my purposes (city guy who goes camping, picks up stuff at the nursery, picks up the occassional piece of furniture), it's the best vehicle I've ever owned. One thing not mentioned in the video is reliability. With regular maintenance it appears that this thing will run forever. The engine is rock solid, the paint is still good, the upholstery is still good, the ride is still very comfortable, and very few of the kind of minor anoyances that I've dealt with on other vehicles have arisen. Even with 200,000 on the odometer, it's still my go to vehicle for a long drive. I agree that it's not a truck for a farmer or a contractor, and it's offroad capabilities are limited (although it's fine on your average poorly maintained dirt road), but for people like me, it's perfect.

You forgot torque vectoring awd. This truck is designed for good handling on roads and highways. Most people don't use their trucks for serious offloading. This truck is ideal for people who just want to pick up stuff but still want something that drives like a car with good handling on dry roads and is still good in the snow as well.

Wisconsin climate, I’ve found my 2022 Ridgeline to be the best snow driving vehicle I’ve ever owned. Including better than my former pilot, sierra, f150, excursion, Tahoe x4. It also rides better than all the aforementioned. I get 24mpg in town and 27.5 on trips. It hauls what I need. The bed is the best! I often haul 4x8 plywood sheets and haul a trailer with my tractor on it. I also drive around our undulating farm and hunting land. I have no desire to go off-roading! I mean most people have no desire to travel to Moab or even lessor rugged areas. I love the comfort it provides. It has a great sound system. Who needs the rear seat heaters? 98% of the time it’s 2 people. I would like the front seats to be ventilated however! Not a deal breaker for me though.

I'm calling BS on the RL ride quality suffering while towing. I tow a 3,500lb boat/motor/single axle trailer with my '23 RL and the ride quality is fantastic, better even than a 2016 Ford Expedition that i had prior which had a 9,000lb tow capacity. I've already towed my boat a few thousand miles with this RL and it does great.

I agree with many of the issues pointed out in the video and the comments. Most especially the lack of ground clearance and low approach/breakover and departure angles. Which, rather than Honda improving them, actually got a bit worse over the years. However, I'. surprised to see the quality/reliability dinged in the comments. I had a 2003 Pilot, which except for a one time issue with front break rotors at about 70K miles, proved to be the most reliable vehicle I ever owned for 100K. Even as good or better than my many Toyotas. (but, I have not kept any much over 100K, so problems might have developed later) Traded the Pilot for a 2008 RL. Absolutely problem free for a bit over 100K(except cloth roof liner was sagging). I even towed 4500 lb for a few 800 mile trips over mountains. Even the stock Michelin tires went over 80K. My son is now very happily driving it after I traded it for a 21 RL. So far, so good for this one. Performance on icy roads and in snow up to 6 or 8"(never got a chance to try in deeper snow), was as good or probably better than anything I have ever had. If it just had some more ground clearance and better of road angles and skid plates, it would be my favorite vehicle with off road capabilities. The torque vectoring AWD system is great. And I have owned 82 Toyota PU's and 83 S10 Blazers with G80 locker and 84 4Runners with Gleason Torque sensing difs front and rear, 87 Pathfinder, 92 Ford Explorer and a 95 Trooper. But, sadly, the 08 and 21 RLs don't have those things. But, if they did, they would be poorer for the 99% that I do on road. As for mileage, in my 21 I get 24-28, and on one trip with a nice tail wind I got 29.

Piston Pundit did a lousy job of reviewing the truck, probably never even drove it. Honda did not design Gen 2 for off road use, evident by the ground clearance. Maybe they will have something going forward with some more ground clearance as demand grows. I will keep my 2018 RTL-T for a long time, it does everything I ask of it including towing a teardrop trailer with the bed full of camping gear and a custom Leer top. I've owned 2 Toyotas tucks, an '85 and'94, both were in the small category, not mid-size. I test drove all the mid-size and full-size trucks before settling on the Ridgeline, which just so happened to be the last one I test drove and blew me away in ride quality, cab size, interior quality, and even power. The mid-size market is heating up, that's a good thing for consumers and the small-size market is coming back with all the offering being unibody. The Ridgeline was ahead of its time and set the standard for the future truck market as evidence by truck sales in the full-size market slowing down. @@thomaswoody9073

I only wish it had 6k towing. Cheers

Basically . If you want a pet that barks, buy a dog, if you want a pet that purrs, buy a cat. I don’t own a Ridgeline yet, but I don’t go off-road, I want something easy to enter and exit. I don’t haul large items, I don’t tow, I don’t need options like automatic wipers or fancy stereo. If people want a full size bed, ground Clarance and fancy options, buy a Silverado.
@timthomas487
@timthomas487 7 месяцев назад
IMO, Honda would kill the midsize pickup market if 1) the bed is 6+ ft in length, 2) can tow 7000+ pounds, and 3) is a true off-road capable truck. I believe the Honda engineers are savvy enough to combine all these elements while making it reliable, comfortable, and reasonably fuel-efficient by adding a hybrid powertrain. Maybe HP output could be 350+ with even higher torque figures. Hope the new 2025 version of the Ridgeline is more revolutionary than evolutionary. The latest version, IMO, is somewhat disappointing. Best of luck Honda. True Honda fans (I've been driving Honda products for 30 years) are pulling for Honda to hit a home run with the new Ridgeline.

I traded in a full size Chevy Silverado that had a towing capacity of 4800 lbs for my Ridgeline. Don’t miss it at all. The Ridgeline might be the best truck I’ve ever owned and I’ve had them all. Only one that might be as good is a Toyota. Bed is big enough, love the trunk, handles great on the road and off road. Hondas AWD system is better than most 4x4 systems. You don’t buy a truck for gas milage. Only thing I wish it had was more ground clearance, other than that, it’s pretty great. Tows just fine.

@daleburton3591 5 месяцев назад
Thanks for the video. I have a 2023 EX-L model (Canada). Fuel consumption - of all the mid sized trucks on the market this one is the most fuel efficient when considering all types of driving. On a road trip mine achieved less than 8L/100km. Not bad considering permanent AWD. Around town in the winter it ranges from 9 to 10.8, depending how I drive. Bed space - I moved a large three seat sofa an its twin two seat sofa in one go. Admittedly, it was tight, but it managed fine. The swing or drop tail gate is a must, add in the in bed storage, it mullers the completion. Drive - this is exceptional. I looked at the Tacoma at the Frontier. Way better for my needs. Off-road - nothing serious, but it managed a steep technical climb and decent, albeit it was rather short. On unpaved roads the AWD keeps the drive manageable and enjoyable. Turbo-4’s vs this 3.5v6 are not the better option. Turbo’s by their design drink gas when pushed and will work much harder than the v6. GM’s 2.7T4 has shown on several You Tubes to be less efficient than the old v6.

Well, been considering Ridgeline vs other trucks for a while now. In the first minute and a half, saw a bunch of falsehoods on the Ridgeline. The payload capacity of the Ridgeline is right in line with that of other tucks. It's towing capacity that's low. The bed of the ridgeline at 5'4" is not only longer than most midsize trucks, it's also wider. Where it lacks is vertical depth, counteracted somewhat by its under bed trunk and spare tire. The last section of the video is laughable. You can't get a AWD/4x4 crew cab truck for 30K, they are comparing a 2 door RWD base model to the Ridgeline. Probably the biggest competitor among mid size trucks is the Frontier. You can get an SV 4x4 for 35-40K, about what a RL Sport costs. The other mid size trucks will cost north of 45K to get leather and a decent infotainment system, about what a RL Black Edition (top line) costs. RL is really somewhat trapped in-between the mini trucks like the Santa Cruz and Maverick, and mid sizers like the Frontier Ranger and Colorado. The lack of ground clearance is indeed a big issue. If they could just clear 8" it would compare much more favorably.

Considering most 3/4 ton trucks largest tests in life are weekend trips to Lowes or trailering a few ATVs, the Ridgeline is a pragmatic choice, but big truck commercials have everyone brainwashed. The most legitimate gripe in this video is the infotainment system, it’s world class awful, if not for Apple CarPlay it would be intolerable. Every other gripe in this video needs perspective against the alternative vehicles being considered.

They are, quite simply, not well designed in the most fundamental ways... especially 2nd gen: No tailgate lock 'til 2020, rear-doors don't open far enough to put cargo even with seats lifted up, weak transmission... I wouldn't haul anything above 3500 k... My 2019 rtl-e has had about 2 recalls/year... and now has a recall for a engine rod-bearing defect. The OEM tonneau-cover leaks, and gaps in the truck-bed allow even more water in. Most of these Hondas suffer 'transmission-shudder' problems... dealerships give you a scripted answer from HoA 'this is nothing to worry about'... go to a real mechanic (void your warranty) 'yeah, this is a common problem, I put some Lubegard in there with the fluid-change' Shudder gone, but the defect remains... Or, the Honda fluid is crap... or both... biiiiig mystery. Windows '98 infotainment, underpowered Android chip and board. You can change radio-stations while driving, evening else you have to pull over and stop. Carplay is a must. Tailgate breaks because of flimsy plastic actuators inside; the rear-door checker upgrade is really just getting front door checkers and putting them in the back to get the doors to open wider. Lol, the bed-outlet? It's a two-prong. These trucks are off-the-shelf quality... don't bother with them.
