I went for a test ride on one today, what a pleasure. typical Transalp does everything well, I currently ride a Transalp 605 and I am seriously considering bankrupting myself to upgrade
@Snoozzzzzze

Had my first test ride today and a few things struck me. First it’s pretty revvy but a very flexible engine, it can handle being in almost any gear. Not loads of low down grunt and it does have a fair bit of vibration through the grips and pegs. Wind protection is amazing for a 6 foot person, I was too warm with every vent open on jacket and helmet as I was dressed for my naked bike, minimal buffeting too. Seat and pegs etc. very comfortable for an hour. Quick shifter is excellent better than my KTM was and that was good. Finally it’s a fast road bike, proper fast on the road.

@Ritalie
@Ritalie Год назад
@@alastairtheduke It seems that none of the bikes today are NOT setup for a person with long legs. I'm not sure why, but manufacturers are making bikes for people who are 5'6" with short legs now. I've never even thought about the concept of seat height until now with all these reviews talking about how low the seats are on these new bikes. Leg space isn't really a concern anyway, it's really cruise control, the final drive gear ratio, engine vibration, wind protection, and seat comfort that are of prime importance. Leg space is something your body and muscles adapt to right away. Your body gets stronger the more you ride a particular bike, and you don't notice the seating position anymore. But no cruise control makes for horrible discomfort on long drives.

The only thing that puts me off this bike is the fact that it has tubed tyres. Two punctures on my africa twin, vowed never again a bike with out tubeless tyres. Interesting to see if they bring out this option like Honda did with the current AT. Until then will stay with my CB500X (22 model) which i think is great all-rounder.
@henrietn
@henrietn Год назад
You can quite easily convert those rimms to tubed. there are loads of howto's online. 120 euros for a kit and some elbow grease. I have done this to my motoguzzi v85tt and works well!
@user-sw2lv3zp6o
@user-sw2lv3zp6o Год назад
As above regarding the conversion kit, or you can put Bike Seal in the tubes. British company, and it works. It doesn't have a two-year life, either. Lasts as long as it takes you to wear the tyre out.
@bruiser6479
@bruiser6479 Год назад
What’s the problem with tubed tyres? I prefer them as it is relatively straightforward to put a new tube in. I’m in Australia and tubed tyres are a safer option for a remote area repair. Especially if you cut a sidewall. You can patch the sidewall and replace the tube. I had a flat on my DR650 20 km’s from the NT border along the Great Central Road. It was reasonably quick to wack in a new tube. So from my perspective a tubed tyre is preferred for remote area travel. Here in Australia I think it’s a good idea to know how to fit your own tyres on an adventure bike. So when confronted with a flat, you have the confidence to do the repair when you are out in the middle of nowhere.

Great bike except I found bit buzzy around 70mph . But yeh very planted ,loads of fun . Great round town . Great on the gravel . Brilliant suspension . Just that vibration at 70mph ,not sure I could handle that .
@Ritalie
@Ritalie Год назад
Buzzy at 70mph. Now you're describing every motorcycle. And it's so stupid. I don't want to be the only person constantly talking about this. You better tell everyone you know NOT to buy the Transalp or any other motorcycle that can't sustain 70mph. How can a bike made in 2023, not have an overdrive? Not having an overdrive is TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE. Overdrive would remove 99% of the vibration. The vibration is because the engine is revved way higher than necessary, it has absolutely no load on the engine at 70mph, like driving your car in 3rd gear at 70mph. People better start complaining, I'm so sick of people completely ignoring the LACK OF AN OVERDRIVE GEAR on all modern bikes. Even the GS1250 BWM is geared similarly bad, with no overdrive, and the Tuareg, and the Tiger 850, to name a few. NONE are actually made for long distance driving!
@Ritalie
@Ritalie Год назад
People say they LOVE the engine on the Transalp and say it's smooth and amazing. So I'm a bit confused, because others say it has immense vibes at speed. It's really strange and annoying that some riders seem to not even hear or feel the engine on their motorcycle, like they are totally oblivious to their environment and the noises and vibrations around them haha. I swear, we are still living in the past, when people give motorcycles a 10 out of 10 review, without ever mentioning the vibration at 70mph, 80, and 90mph. People cruise at 90 and 95mph on a very regular basis. And it is the people that are to blame here, because the professional motorcycle review channels never complain about gear ratios, they seem to believe that everyone drives in the city.
@Ritalie
@Ritalie Год назад
The Suzuki 800 parallel twin competing with the Translap, also has pretty significant buzzing, to the point that one review basically described it as so powerful that it was intrusive. And I'd bet money that the Suzuki 800 is also geared way too low, and the engine is turning 5,800 rpms at 70mph.
@Ritalie
@Ritalie Год назад
One last thing, and why I am so irritated about this. Because it's the year 2023...... AND..... Jay Leno showed his 1932 Henderson motorcycle, it has 54 horsepower, a glassy smooth inline 4 cylinder with a special crankshaft that makes it run silky smooth, and it actually has an overdrive. Jay explains that it's basically a better motorcycle than today's motorcycles, for cruising, because of the overdrive, and the motor barely even spinning at highway speed.... That's 90 YEARS AGO we had an overdrive 90 years ago!!!?????? AHHHHHHH.
@kpappa

I’m thinking Honda tried to cover too many bases here, if the bike was designed as an adv styled tourer then it should have had tubliss tyres and cruise control, on the other hand if it was designed as a true adv bike then the exhaust is too low it doesn’t have adjustable suspension and the suspension travel and ground clearance is not good enough. It’s neither one thing or the other to my mind, I’ll be putting my money else where
@mikecollins3406
@mikecollins3406 9 месяцев назад
In my opinion the ground clearance is a little low however its not that much less then a T7. Yeah it doesnt have adjustable suspension but what does for 10k bucks? Its a budget middle weight geared more to the road then offroad. In my opinion you get quite a bit of bike for the money. It will do what 80 percent of adv riders will even do. If your in that top 10 percent of riders then you wouldn’t be looking at this bike anyway. If the had put a better suspension on it then it would probably be 12.5k bucks and people would complain its too much. Its a good platform to make it in to what you want. The ground clearance is still like 8 inches. You get 10.4 inches of clearance on the ktm 790 and that’s basically the best but your gonna pay a lot more.

in the absence of cruise control and tubeless rims, you'd think honda could have at least specced a bike that's likely to see a few slow speeds drops with a folding gear lever and rear brake pedal. Guess they're trying to pare the retail cost down to the max, given the bike's rivals. Should make for a really nice back lane explorer, rather than anything more gnarly. It's still a 200kg+ porker compared to a trail bike, but then again, who wants to load up a 350 enduro with luggage and tour europe? Hope the aftermarket get behind it with a few choice bits (higher level exhaust, decent drop protection, sump guard etc.) Would be great if one of the UK based suspension specialists develop adjustable cartridges and a quality rear shock, although the stock set-up may well be more than adequate for the type of riding the bike will be mostly subjected to. Test ride for me, next week hopefully :) I reckon someone, somewhere, will eventually figure out a hack for turning TC off, if it can't be done already

Just my opinion. As you own an AT interesting question for me, would you say the AT is £k's more of a bike than the Transalp for it's starting price? If that makes sense 😉 but i guess the gap gets narrower by the time there's a bash plate/ hand gaurds on it, which you're going to want if you do some big bike trails.

I'd be a bit worried about a rock or log taking the bottom of the sump off where the drain plug is, at 13:38 it looks like it has an extension that's hanging down in the breeze. Horrible design for an ADV bike. Great for draining, not so good for instantly draining! Hopefully a bash plate will cover that up, definitely needed as on pretty much all ADV's. At least the rear peg/exhaust mount is bolted on so could be modded for a different can if needed. Looks pretty comfortable...

On the Triumph, I had to purchase Dealertool to reset the light myself without taking it in for them to clear it. I do my own service so don't want to take it in to clear that. I am interested in the Honda but was pretty disturbed about the same issue being included on this bike. It's like the Dealers have worked it out with the manufacturer to ensure you take the bike in to them for service. Someone please tell me Honda has made it easy to clear that without some device I have to purchase or take it in.

Ultimately, it's unacceptable that Honda's Translap, Aprilia's Tuareg, BMW's GS1250, and the Tiger models all suffer from the same lack of an overdrive gear, and are geared too short at highway speeds. Why people are ok with not having an overdrive is one of life's great mysteries. We need to start speaking up about this, and stop putting up with 1970's gear ratios on a 2023 computerized motorcycle. COMPLAIN about the engine buzzing at 70mph. 6th gear should be an OVERDRIVE GEAR! NO EXCEPTIONS.

Front light should have been a dual round light setup, this pointy stuff looks like the crappy KTM praying mantis with a hang over thing we all despise...The other major design brain fart is the exposed exhaust routing, OK for a road bike, NFW (No F$%ing way) for an ADV. For the rest, it has potential. Couple of tweaks and some aftermarket stuff and I would accept being seen with her in public. A little disappointed with Honda for a bland release with not much excitement, reliability will not be an issue, it's a Honda but it lacks that little spark we all wanted to see.

The Transalp is an amazing machine. One major red flag stands out to me, after reading the comments here, and on other videos. It's the short gearing. People say it's "buzzy" at 70mph through the bars and foot pegs. Now, this could be people who don't understand giant parallel twins, and their inherent vibration compared to an inline 4 cylinder 600cc sportbike. From what I've learned, a parallel twin can never be as smooth as a 90 degree V-Twin or an inline 4 cylinder of the similar displacement. There are a few reasons for this. But the main reason is that parallel twins don't have a shared crankpin, the crankshaft is much wider than a 90 degree V-Twin engine with it's single crankpin. A 90 degree V-twin is really a completely different engine, it has it's pistons nearly inline with each other, on the same longitudinal axis, because the connecting rods are sharing the same crankpin. A V-twin won't have the rocking vibration to the same degree if at all, because the single crankpin is applying the firing pulses near to the absolute center of the engine.
