Make sure you’re using the right oil. Wet clutches need friction modifiers specifically designed for motorcycles. Otherwise the clutches will glaze over and need to be replaced again.
@nme1605
@nme1605 4 года назад
I was going to add the same comment. I use Rotella T6 in my 4t bikes. There is a code that is used to designate use for a wet clutch. I don't know what it is but a Google search will let you know. Otherwise, yes, you will be replacing the pack often and sending debris throughout your engine.
@derhiob8493
@derhiob8493 4 года назад
Old engine means old type of oil, guessing it's sae 10 w 40, striktly none synthetic oil !!!! And don't rev the cold engine that high !!!! This will burn the clutch in no time. Lower revs, more sence for gas and clutch lead to proper driving without destroying this great engine 🤠

As a retired mechanic I would like to share a piece of experience with you. I have damaged electronics by welding on vehicles. I remove O2 sensors whenever I weld on the exhaust. Modern electronics seem to be more forgiving but cars from the 80's and 90's were vulnerable. It was standard practice to wear a ground strap on your wrist when replacing chips, etc. I would unplug the electronics when welding on the frame.

I have realised that you ride your clutch on the way to a stop, you will keep replacing the clutch plates if you keep doing that, don't hold the clutch in when your in gear, use engine brake technique when slowing down and then in neutral, if it makes any sense. I did the same thing and also went through clutch plates like crazy, and on my car, now I have the knowledge and save on repairing or replacing the clutch.

Have you Synced your carbs yet? Replace the CDI Unit, they are known to burn out on basically every bike ever. Pick up a spare too. Get 4 new NGK plugs for it too. Look for some new coils too, they can overheat and short. Also make sure the stator is producing a solid voltage at idle. And as many have said already, you NEED to use motorcycle-grade oil so the clutches dont burn out continuously. MAybe add a big oil cooler too

I would recommend welding in a bulk head of some sort. In the event the motor comes apart, you and any passenger are at risk of flying debris or potential flash fire from striking the gas tank etc. Not sure if you considered that or not and I know you're trying to keep the weight down, but I feel that's something critical to have before you really start taking it out as well as get too far and cant do it without stripping it back down. Love the progress of the buggy though
@ManOnBrokenHorse
@ManOnBrokenHorse 4 года назад
About the CDI, if you can knock it and get it to work the problem is probably pretty simple, a soldering has gone cold (open it up, look for places that does not look like components are touching the PCB and simply add a bit of soldering) OR it's a glitchin connector (clean all connectors with WD-40, dry carefully with some paper, add a bit of diselectric grease and connect it all together.) It's just electronics, not radioactive waste, just open it up and check it out. Good luck bro, nice build.

Actually showing the before and after with the springs wouldn't have to be boring. You could take measurements (heights for no load, 1 passenger, 2 passenger, hard take off, body roll) to show how much of a difference changing 50/100 pounds can make. It could help people estimate the spring ratings they would need.

Are you using a motorcycle rated gear/motor oil? Or a conventional motor oil? As motorcycle gear boxes (with wet clutches) require a motorcycle rated oil (added friction modifier), over a conventional car or otherwise rated motor oil. If you've used ordinary motor oil it might explain the clutch pad early wear.

I believe you can run the ignition using 1980 Cavalier hei modules, coils and plug wires. It might have a 7 pin hei which is $30 or so, but i think old 70s chevy trucks/cars have a 4 pin version that's cheaper. If you google it there are a fair number of articles on wiring these.
