@@kevindelgado1459 and Stray won Best Indie, Best Debut Indie, and got nominated for GOTY last year. Imagine the first game your studio ever makes getting nominated. They definitely celebrated more than FromSoftware who won GOTY.

Also the obvious should be pointed out: it doesn't matter if it's a sequel. Claiming to be original is irrelevant, most video game franchises, their best entry is almost never the first game. Being original ironically means you're just set up to be inferior to whatever actually can improve off of their predecessors.

It's because it's rare actually good games get nominated so much as "games with broad appeal" or "games that got a ton of media attention". There's a reason that out of the nominees, two are decent but nothing particularly special Nintendo games, one is a okay remake of a beloved classic, and one is a decent sequel to a Marvel property. There's at least half a dozen better games from this year in terms of quality, such as Armored Core 6, Remnant 2, Final Fantasy XVI, and Sea of Stars, just to name a few. But they lack the broader appeal so they don't really even get considered for the main category, and only occasionally get thought of for the more specialized ones. It's less about what was the actual "best game of the year" so much as "what's a game that everyone heard about and liked well enough". While both Sekiro and Elden Ring have won in the past, generally they had less big releases those years to fight with, and they were a bit broader in appeal.

It was a pretty stacked year and while AC6 was a huge leap forward for the series, I could see how it didn't make it compared to those titles(except Alan Wake 2, IMO not GotY material)

@bigboi4732 heck no I don't think games from 20 years ago are worth being goty but in my opinion bg3 and zelda are just so much better then everything else but that is just my opinion and not saying the rest are bad by any means I enjoyed so many games this year its been a great year but those two stand out the most for me

Except it did not innovate at all? Come on guys, mario was my childhood and all, but the game is absolutely not a goty candidate. The wonder flowers are so innovative you say? Well guess what the crazy gimmicks that comes with the wonder flowers were already there in mario bros 3, super mario galaxies, 3d world, 2d raymans, donkey kong country returns e.t.c. The only thing wonder flowers does is to make it painfully obvious that there will be a half-assed gimmick,you could change them with the warp boxes from 3d world for example and literally nothing would change. Rhythm levels? Rayman did it better a decade ago. Gimmicks like the shadow stage? Donkey Kong tropical freeze did better almost a dedade ago. Difficulty curve? Both rayman and donkey kong did it significantly better.There is not a single thing mario wonder did the best compared to other popular modern 2d titles. Soundtrack? Forgettable for a mario game. The powerups? The drill powerup was from mario galaxy, the elephant powerup is a super one dimensional one and the bubble powerup is not even new it was in nsmbu and also in a popular mario world romhack that a teenager made. It is the usual fun mario game but nothing more to it then that.

@@AndrewThoesen Doubtful. I do like the game but let's be honest, its gameplay and polish is of the best quality but everything else, other games did it better. If bg3 win music or audio, the judges are deaf.

They took 7 awards at the Golden Joystick Awards and I felt sorry for their CEO. I hope he brings a wheelbarrow this time.

I like TotK, but... BG3 obliterates it. TotK would have had a chance in 2021 or 2020, but both Baldur's Gate this year and Elden Ring last year are strong candidates for "Best game of the past decade".

@@TheKrazyguy75 agreed, TotK holds a pretty unique place though. It's not entirely fresh (though there's nothing wrong with that, especially with how much more they've added), but if we were talking about both BoTW and TotK combined, or if TotK had come out on its own lonesome- it would probably also compete for the "best game of the past decade" and be a strong contender against Baldur's Gate 3 and Elden Ring. IMO TotK would absolutely have won (or if not, should have) 2020, 2021 or even 2022. It probably might not be the absolute best game of the past decade, but it's definitely in the top 10.

​@@TheKrazyguy75Considering that Breath of the Wild was considered among a huge number of people to be the best game of all time, and considering Tears of the Kingdom is a big jump up from Breath of the Wild, I don't see how TotK wouldn't be in the running for best of the decade, along with Elden Ring and Balder's Gate 3.

Well, if you play Baldur's Gate (by far the most technically impressive of the nominees) you'll still be catching up on the rest of the list this time next year. That game is BIG.
