Bro.... you have THE BEST Review out there..... as EVERYONE else has the same cookie cutter review, it gets sooooooo boring...... you have actually told us the FACTS (the good and the bad!!!..... the bad is really what I wanted to hear!!!) and that is so refreshing!!!! Thank you!!! I currently have a Stage 2 tuned BMW M340i xDrive..... but..... I'm itching to get back into a Manual JDM car, so I'm checking out the FL5, GR Corolla, GR Yaris (we can get them in Australia) or VB WRX/VA STi. The Golf R is only Automatic here..... Cheers Don, Perth W.Australia (Dons Shed and Xplor Overland)
Thanks brother I really appreciate your comment I'm happy to know that the review is helpful to you, I highly recommend you get the Type R, I'm not sure who you'd go to for tuning in Australia, but if you have access to Hondata then I'd say to get your ECU unlocked by them or someone closer to you and from there you can have a ton of fun with this car, it's literally one of the best tuner cars out there in my opinion.
I agree with you in every way about the Type R, I traded my 2024 Golf R manual in because I had the opportunity to get a Rally Red 2024 Type R without a market adjustment. Let me tell you best decision ever plus the Golf R just felt soulless. I work remote and when I do actually drive I wanted to feel like I was driving something special and exciting 😮💨 and yes the attention the type R gets is a big bonus 😂
Aww man I'm going to pin your comment because even as recent as yesterday I was considering getting the Golf R just to have something new to focus on RU-vid but I knew I'd regret it because the Type R just feels so special, I haven't driven another car recently that has that same special feeling.
@@RaceCarFriends yeah man I had the golf R for six months got it last year when the 2024’s hit the lot and I’ll tell you it’s a great car but for my needs I wanted something more exciting I’m working on paring the Type R with a manual M2 🙌🏾
I disagree. I’ve driven the CTR, and it simply doesn’t feel special to me at all when driving it. Why? It’s the FWD that ruins it for me. Now, I’m not saying the Golf R feels special. No, that doesn’t either. I’m just saying the CTR doesn’t give me any more “special” factor over other FWD sport vehicles. I have an E46 M3 coupe 6spd and a MK7 GTI. Both are modded. My modded GTI feels just as capable than a stock CTR. But I don’t really feel that special’ness in my GTI either because of it being FWD. My E46 M3 though, felt 1000x more special right of the bat in stock form than the CTR did. And my M3 is a 2003, making it almost 22 years old! It’s highly modified now, and that has made it feel even more special, but in comparison to the CTR stock vs stock, the E46 M3 hands down feels a lot more special. Mostly because of its superb quality, handling, and it being RWD. But it also is faster 0-60mph than a CTR, which is just crazy. And if you do get the tires loose, which is easy, you can have fun drifting or power sliding, which is so much funner than just spinning tires in FWD. Stock it handles so good still, and you really don’t need anything more as a sports car.
@@JacesOwnWorld I agree with you an M car is where it’s at hahahahahah in a perfect world I would own an M2 but I’m working on it then I can be like you haha the E 46 is an amazing machine indeed but I can’t find one that’s decently priced as far as the Type R it’s just a great all around vehicle and consumables won’t break the bank for me right now but buddy the M3/M2 I get what you mean very special cars. But they are more expensive vehicles to maintain so yeah if you got it like that I would choose that proper rear wheel drive fun and special sports car any day 😂
Yea bro I have the 2019 FK8 and I agree on everything. I didn’t like the FL5 at first but now it’s growing on me. But I wouldn’t trade my FK8 for anything it truly is special and I’ll keep it as long as I can. I get so many people almost daily just coming up to me and complimenting me on it. Old ladies to younger guys just a whole spectrum of people are attracted to it and it makes me smile every time I get on the highway. It truly is an amazing car and I’m sure the FL5 is the same. Mine is Rallye Red
Great review, man! I got a 2024 Type R a few weeks ago and honestly, it's the best car I have ever owned. I haven't owned any sports cars in my life. The Type R is a dream car of mine, I wanted to get one since I first got my license and I tell people I have negative 6 regrets, my only regret is not buying it sooner. I know though that I'm going to need to buy some all weather tires for winter, here in NJ. That said, the summer tires are more expensive for whatever reason. The All Season version of the same time are running around $250 each, and that is about the going rate for those tires in general.
Thanks I really appreciate it and man I know exactly what you mean I've had over 35 different cars and I can honestly say that the Type R has been the best out of all of them.
I’m so glad to hear that your favorite car is the 2019 VW Golf R I still remember the day you bought it form me And I see you got the MK8 now keep making videos man love them!
Whats going on brother! I still remember the day I bought it from you like it was yesterday! I wish you were still selling VW's I'd probably buy a Golf R from you now lol.
Type R is a definitely near perfect. I wish they had the middle seat instead of the cup holders but it what it is. You made a lot of great points which I agree with and for lack of better words WE OUTSIDE
😆😆😆 LMAO! Man your comment had me cracking up! I was just talking to Que today about just how good the VB WRX is, my problem is that I don't currently have the money to support my car addiction 😅 If I did I would have a 2019 Golf R, 2023 Golf R, 2024 GTI 380, 2024 Subaru WRX TR, 2021 Subaru WRX STI, I'd have 4 FL5 Type R's I'd have one in Rally Red, Championship White, Boost Blue, and one in Black as well, I'd also have a 2021 Camaro 2SS 1LE, a 2013 and 2023 Camaro ZL1, a Porsche 911 GTS, a couple old school cars, and a new Ford F350 Dually. Lol I genuinely enjoy drivers cars and trucks and I try to get the best ones that are the most fun but also the most reliable with the lowest cost of maintenance, so whatever you see me with now is the best of the best I can afford that meets those parameters.
I traded my 2019 FK8 for a 2023 FL5 when they first came out! I was able to pick one up for msrp in my home town!! I liked my fk8 but would never go back to it after owning my FL5! The FL5 is all around in my personal opinion a better car! Definitely worth it at msrp! I agree with you that it is hard to explain that unless you have actually drove and experience the FL5 it’s hard to express how good it is!
Part of me wishes I waited and got the FL5 Type R, but the other side of me loves my DE5 ITS. FL5 definitely feels like a more special car with the badge and the seats and the rear fenders not just being tacked on and the LogR, and the wing but at the same time I enjoy the exterior looks more of the ITS, the better ride quality, the slightly more premium interior, the audio system, the HUD, and the burble tune is fun as well. The main reason it's tough in Canada is because the ITS retails for $55,600 CAD and the Type R at $52,000 CAD and they only send us 200 Type R's per year vs it seems like there's a lot more ITS being sent to us, and it's near impossible to get a brand new Type R since the list is so long whereas I found it quite easy getting a brand new ITS and on the used market the Type R is being sold for more money than a brand new ITS so it's almost a no brainer here.
The market of type R, Golf R, GR, etc.. is my wheelhouse. I’m just drawn too these cars so much more than any other category of car at any price point. any time I thought I wanted to spend big money for something else I’ve always regretted it and came back to the $30k-$45k enthusiast offerings. When I see a type R and anything double its price I’m drooling over the type R. It may also be that I know those people are enthusiast drivers whereas most people that go for the expensive stuff just want to be seen and not really drivers in many cases.
I agree with this. I am a huge German car guy but unfortunately even cars like the newer M3’s (hell even g87 M2) are simply unobtainable for the average person paired with a sickening cost of living in 2024. I have to assume the sub $45k (brand new MSRP) enthusiast car market is growing like wild fire due to this. I wanted an FL5 but ultimately picked up a CPO FK8 for low 30’s at the end of 2023. Will likely pick up an FL5 in the next 18-24 months, at which time hopefully we will see some examples with 50-60k miles a few years old for mid 30’s. Wishful thinking, I know, but who knows.
Between The FL5, FK8, and the GR Corrola, we are getting the best at what a hot hatch can be and probably the last time we will see them unfortunately. I love what Honda and Toyota did with these vehicles and I will say the FL5 grew on me, when they first showcased it I got accord / Audi sedan vibes and wasn’t feeling it. 😂
Lol same here, I actually really loved the GR Corolla until I drove it, It's a great car if I would have never driven the Type R, but afterwards the GRC just feels too unrefined for me personally, but either way I'm happy that Toyota makes it.
Good Review, I am happy that you are overall HAPPY with your pick. I got a 10th GEN Honda Civic Si. I think I will stay in that price range. BTW, Dam😂 you had a lot of cars. # Save the Manuals.
I want to buy one and daily it. There is a reason why you get one of these and those similar in this category. You can change your stock tires with ROTAs and a relieable all weather tire. That way you dont have to worry about replacing an expensive stock wheel and tire setup. You buy your favorite toy and use it ever single day rather than having it sit in your garage collecting dust. Unless you plan of selling it then I would understand why you want it mint and low mileage.
I have the same car, just a '24. Everything you've said I agree with. It's my daily driver so it always gets dirty and I'm always hand washing it. I guess the color just attracts rocks or something because it's been nicked a few times already. The black trim (wing, sideskirts) are dirt magnets. Like you said, i always want to keep it as clean as possible because it's always getting attention and it feels like a special car. One other thing is the fuel tank!! It's so small!!!! I can practically watch the fuel gauge drop in real time. 😂. Other slight nitpicks: i wish there was a sunglasses holder, the wireless phone charger is too small for my huge phone. None of that matters however when I drive the car and I realize why I really bought it.
Yup I'm right there with you, I definitely wish the fuel tank was bigger, and I also hand wash mine like every week lol I literally just washed it this morning but yeah all in all it's an amazing vehicle and I'm really happy with it.
If you want an awd beast there is the GR Corolla . I test drove the both and felt the GRC to be a much better daily driver package as long as you are okay with downsizing to a smaller vehicle .
I never really liked the look of the fk8. But when I saw the new FL5 I really liked it and I thought it would be a perfect pair right next to my Ap1 s2000… unfortunately my local dealer was charging 56k for it and I knew I couldn't convince my wife for our family to fit in it for that price. So I ended up getting a cx90 Turbo S premium for around the same price. No regrets. I love my 90. But really wish I could get an FL5.
Yup we're pretty much in the same boat lol my wife fought with me when I went to get the Type R, eventually I was able to get it by promising her we'd get a CX-90 afterwards 😆
@@heNzVf20c Thanks a lot for being a part of the channel, you don't know it but your comment really influenced a car buying decision I was just about to make lol a dealership offered me a lot of money for my Type R to trade it in for a Golf R and I was considering doing it but then after I read your comment I was like nah the Type R is staying.
@@RaceCarFriends oh wow. I'm glad you kept the Type R. IMO it's more special. You already have a GTI and I feel like having a Honda and a VW can get you a wider audience for your channel than having 2 VW’s. However, you could trade the GTI for a Golf R🤔😁
@@heNzVf20c Lol thanks and yup I agree with you, it's better to have the CTR and GTI, and ideally I'd like to add on a Golf R later on as the channel grows.
ive owned a handful of civics I have a 2019 fk8 with basic bolt ons and other small upgrades I've owned for 4.5 years I love it but I loathe for the day I get a fl5 hopefully in red or black would love to keep both the fk8 for track days and daily the fl5 they are amazing cars for the money
Yeah looks are subjective, for me personally there are days I look at the GTI and think it looks better and then there's days I look at the Type R and think it looks better, I go back and forth all the time lol.
@@RaceCarFriends very true lol. The FL5 as a whole is beautiful. The front end, particularly the upper grille and headlight area look a bit meh, especially straight on. It just looks kinda dorky or something. I wish this area was revised to look more aggressive. If the facelift improves this area I may look into swapping the front end. It’s the only thing I don’t love about the looks.
The fl5 is an amazing car, i would of bought one if it was awd, i live where it snows so sold my 9th gen civic si and bought a gr corolla and i love it!
Picked up my 2024 FL5 2 months ago and you pretty much hit the nail on the head. I’ve been out of the performance car scene for 15 years, but previously owned a 2003 WRX (eventually built to 400whp), mint resto-mod 1969 Camaro, MazdaSpeed6, 2005 C6 Corvette (eventually twin-turbo 700hp), among others. The FL5 is the most fun to drive. In the current market, it’s a bargain if you are looking for a pure driver’s car. 🤌
@@RaceCarFriends Hah nice. As far as Hondas go, I had a 1990 and 1991 CRX Si when I was 18 and 20. Wish I still had them. Rocked a ‘99 Accord v6 Coupe as a daily when I got away from cars and fully into bikes back in 2008, then a 2006 Civic Hybrid a couple years later (junk). But yeah, this car impresses the shit out of me in terms of visceral fun all around, and I’m gonna go out on a limb and say it’s actually more fun than my twin-turbo C6 in every way except a straight line. 😆
@@the_wor_st Lol yup we're definitely on the same page because that's how I feel about the Type R Vs My Camaro SS 1LE everyone is shocked when I tell them that I get more enjoyment out of the Type R vs the Camaro lol.
Great video bro those tires seem more expensive than your old Camaro tires I wouldn't mind seeing another Camaro or Golf R on your channel again but like you said the Type R really is special
@@RaceCarFriends yep, tires are expensive will agree i payed 1,740 for michelin ps4 as on the stock 20 inch wheels after taxes and alignment. You cant cheap out on tires on the type r, well worth it though and will last!
i figure most people would just get 18 inch te's or something and tires wouldnt be that expensive lol once you hit 19 inches and up, tires get real pricey
Only Hondas Ive ever owned were my '18 FK8 and my '24 FL5. Only FK8 I would pick over a FL5 is a minty LE ( which I haven't been able to find).Type Rs are amazing cars. Def made the right choice over the Golf R. Ive been looking at AWD cars recently since I gave my AWD GT2 Stinger to my son. Thinking I might add a Corolla GR Circuit to the line up. Been curious about them since the videos you made about them.
Thanks man I feel like I made the right decision too, but my advice is to pass on the GR Corolla's for now because everyone I know that bought one traded out of them pretty quickly, I feel like Toyota saw it as a money grab and just threw those cars together rather than focusing on building them as well as they have built Toyota's in the past.
yes tires are expensive but you don’t have to use the recommended tires for them. there’s other good brands that aren’t performance tires. all of those tires you’re looking at are performance/track tires and also the wheel sizes determines the price. wider tire=more money. that’s why vw tires are cheaper
I can already imagine if this car was AWD, the whole car world would lose their mind and it would be damn near impossible to get one without having to pay and even more insane ADM than the one that already exists.
355 👀 one tire! Wow I didn’t know they was on 19s. I thought they was 18s! That’s crazy! The looks of the FL5 is growing on my me like you but the FK8 . I wish the FL5 came with the option of carbon fiber rear seats! That would be dope. Btw your not a regular human In accordance to height 🤣
i want one so bad, after wrecking my previous car, currently stuck in a civic sport 21, might wait till 25 to get the r, and fuck those performance tires they wear too fast, stick a good pair of all weather and save a little bit, had 19 inch rims on my previous and it was not cheap
Yeh don’t be surprised if it finally come out that all they other Honda competitors are paying them under the table to not make their a civic type r or Acura Integra type r or s awd lol.
Thanks I appreciate it and yeah man I know what you mean about the Subaru buying experience I wish all of my car buying experiences were as good as they have been whenever I buy a Subaru.
I also got into the Miata hahahaha and I remember the vlog you were trying to get in a Miata, i try the Miata top of the line, the Recaro seats in the Miata are super, bit better than the once on the gr86, Also gear box in the Miata felt better than the one in the 86, clutch on both cars are pretty much the same. But Miata top of the line 44,000 and gr86 35,000 also gr86 exterior looks like a super car, Miata not much and also has a old antenna so double sunk 😂😂😂
@@RaceCarFriends Yeah man it's something that I have in the back of my head that keeps popping up the Rtv issue! but Toyota claims their is no issue.. and if the engine does fail depending on what they find in the investigation... they will replace engine.... im not gotta mod the car or anything only exterior stuff so that will help me if engine blows up 😂 when they investigate the car and see no mods... but yeah man I just hope that Toyota does call out a recall to take the car into the dealer free of charge and make them remove the oil pan, remove anything in the pick up tube and attach oil pan again...cause im not gonna open it or nothing im gonna leave how it is, what ever their instructions are that's what I will do.
@@RaceCarFriends I’m a bit of an audio as well as a car enthusiast but I’ve leased cars the past several years as I get bored, I had kids and needed larger cars and I’ve just lived with audio set up stock in Three passats and now a Tiguan. Also, I don’t trust european cars for longevity enough to buy one. I’m also rebelling against overspending for luxury. It’s a fools errand. Anyway, I’m wanting to buy a fun to drive car that can be owned long term. I’ve test driven the Subaru WRX
Btw im thinking on getting the Toyota gr86 in Neptune blue!!! hopefully!!! color is similar to your type r color. And yeah I'll be getting a car that has a motor that loves to eat Silicon/RTV hahahahahaha, GR86 The car just looks awesome!!! same feeling I get as looking to a Type R
Man I was really close to trading in the GTI for a GR86 I just got scared off with the RTV issues, what would you prefer to see on the channel, the Type R with the GTI or the Type R with a GR86 or Subaru BRZ ?
@@RaceCarFriends Man! me getting a Gr86 is as close as im ever going to get to experience something like driving a Porsche!!! To me Gr86 is the Japanese Porsche!!!! Cayman! it has a boxer engine like the Porsche and it looks like one And its rear wheel drive! totally different experience of driving, so i would love to see the GR86 in the channel, I know you gonna enjoy it maybe even more that the Type R... who knows, but you did drive the brz... its pretty much the same vehicle, how did it feel ? remember this cars don't got a ton of HP but the experience is what counts and this Gr86 on curvy roads maybe beats more expensive cars!!!
@@bicicaptura The BRZ was a lot of fun to drive, it felt like a pure driving experience but also felt very small so I don't know if it would be the right car for me because I'm 6'6" but it's so much fun I might still get one later on.
@@RaceCarFriends wow 6’6 is NBA level of tallness! Im 5’11 and inside of the gr86 i feel a bit tight. Probably it also has to do with my weight 🤣that car if i end un getting will make me loose weight 🤣
The STI is more raw and old school, it isn't as fast as the CTR I was able to get faster 0 to 60 times with the CTR over the STI, but the STI is super rewarding once you modify it, but pound for pound the CTR is the better car.
I actually agree with you on this, the CTR is the better car when it comes to performance, reliability, and resale value, but the looks and value of the GTI is very hard to beat.
@@hugdeath929 Smart choice I was looking at the Genesis version of the Stinger the only reason I didn't get it was because they didn't offer it with a manual gearbox.
@@RaceCarFriends Similar tastes. I also looked at the G70 but the rear seemed tighter or as tight as my GTI which I found strange for a vehicle that presented as a larger vehicle than the GTI. I also went and checked out the CX90 when it dropped 👍
@@RaceCarFriends Ok cool! it would be nice to hear from you your opinion in comparison to the type r, the Elantra n its a better option for me in regards of the price I have seen then around $39,000 in comparison to the type r over here in PR $69,000
The only regret is you paid $60,000 for the car.....probably $80,000 plus including interest. Thats some serious money. That car better have a pussy and be able to cook!
