Last night I decided to try another subscriber request- Kay's "Special Fried Rice." I don't think I've ever cooked rice like this before. Music is from Sonic 3D Blast
Lee is so amazing for his mother and your daughter is at work. Face-palm. Also daughter is at work? I thought you were like 27! Does she work for Nike or something?
i feel like thats the true meaning of honest tries, even down to using damn near expired ingredients, blackening garlic, or reducing soft drinks over eggs, its all done as its shown
Usually, you will use leftover rice for fried rice. This is a good way to use up leftovers, and the consistency of the rice is a little different than freshly steamed rice. It's a bit dryer, and the grains don't cling together as much, which means that you'll get a mouthful of every ingredient with every spoonful, instead of rice just clumping together with the eggs.
“When Big Lee was chewing, I could hear a lot of crunching and popping.” Those were just his teeth breaking on the raw rice and the cremated chunks of garlic pebbles that his mom tried to kill him with.
I remember when RU-vidr Should I Series still made videos of him making and trying recipes back then, this was a highly requested recipe of Kay’s for him to try. He’s gone now probably, so it’s nice to see someone else try the recipe that made Uncle Roger flip his lid.
He’s still around. I saw a comment where he said he would come back and make videos when he pleases, that he works on his own time or something like that. I believe he got fired from the restaurant he worked at and that sparked the change in his videos/live streams and eventually lead to the absence of content. I throughly enjoyed his videos, I hope he does come back.
Man I miss his videos. His family owned the restaurant and they had to sell it. Tried to buy a new one but the deal fell through. He vows to return. I'm still subscribed.
Sir, I just wanted to stop by again and say I just love what you're doing. You're not obnoxious or arrogant trying to get views or "E-beg" for notoriety or money. This is legit wholesome meme'n on cooking channels (and those who also cover them) for all the right reasons--primarily being for entertainment and fun. None of which is mean spirited....you are of a rare breed here on RU-vid. Take my sub!
"Are you supposed to use cooked rice?" that's a yes. I mean you could probably get away with doing it rissotto style but you'll still need a ton more water than what's in with the peas.
3 cups of water per cup of rice minimum if you wanted to try a risotto type method, but even then, I don't think you're gonna end up with properly cooked rice. Fried rice needs the rice to be cooked and cold, and is best when any starch is washed out before cooking. It's a way to use up leftover rice.
@@DJSockmonkeyMusic this is why I'm so grateful for my rice cooker. Best $25 ever spent, nearly impossible to mess up withh even rice/water ratios withh the little cup provided 😂
Nice first attempt. Your garlic is WAY undercooked though. You need that slight bitterness to offset the sweetness of the peas. That's what makes it SPECIAL.
the sheer amount of will it must take to subject yourself to awful recipes AND not being scared to do them exactly the way they were made, just for yourself and others to know if its really as bad as it looks is amazing. You really deserve many more subs
I Love that whilst frying the rice, he instinctively was wanting to have cooked it. And just thinking it was cooked in Kay's video, because it's so outlandish that someone would fry uncooked rice lol
Dude no fucking way you are playing Streets of Rage as background music. My favorite game to play with people on Sega when I was a kid. I've been watching your videos casually but now I'm definitely subscribing.
they usually steam rice and then fry it in a wok/frying pan with an egg slurry on low head which makes the rice that iconic yellow color! or for brown fried rice, its just soy sauce and probably some oyster sauce!
He could've went for the Jamie Oliver recipe, the BBC recipe, hell, given himself a treat and did the Nat's What I Reckon recipe. Nope, he wanted to establish dominance.
I don't know anything about fried rice, but I feel like you're right about needing to use already cooked rice for it. I'd love to see you try Jack's 'Incredible mac and cheese' at some point. I feel like that one probably could be good if cooked by someone who knows what they're actually doing.
This recipes got one thing in mind - I don’t need it - I don’t need it - I definitely don’t need it (Glimpses at the water in the pea pot) - I NEEEEEEEDDDDD ITTTTTTT
Just FYI, you CAN put raw rice on a pan and toast it, so long as you add water to cook it afterwards. it's ready for the water when it smells like popcorn.
One way to fix this would have been to add hot water slowly and stirring to cook the rice. Also the lunchmeat could be lightly fried on its own to help improve flavor and texture, then the eggs, then the peas and finally rice added in to the stir fry. Also frying spices makes them taste way better, particularly black pepper, basil or oregano, among others. But props to toughing it out to add authentic suffering.
Never made fried rice and you have a wok like that? Crazy. Yes you should use leftover rice. I've found as long as its cold its ok to use. I've used same day rice after cooling in the fridge for a few hrs with good results. If you use warm fresh rice when you go to fry it it just turns to mush.
You mad lad. Now you need to collab with kay or jack Edit: you didnt follow kay's express cooking. Garlic wasnt blackened enough, pot wasnt hot enough, didnt use enough oil Yes: fried rice is usually made with leftover rice or cold rice
What a great idea for a channel. August and Roger are constantly doing videos on Jack and Kay's nasty cooking. Instant exposure on every video. Jack did like 1600 videos so you will never run out of content lol
“I’ve never made fried rice before…” Good news! If you followed Kay’s recipe then you still haven’t! I’m glad you attempted this. Even for KC, this was a pretty egregious culinary felony. Like you said, you use day-old steamed rice (not raw), and it needs soy sauce, sesame oil, and preferably white pepper for a better, more authentic flavor. Uncle Roger would recommend MSG, too.
I love this channel, I really hope to see you grow more and more! Also props for going all in on authenticity on this one, I might’ve been tempted to cheat and use day old rice LOL
Fried Rice is actually considered best if you use yesterday's rice. I haven't looked into why but I've heard it from multiple chefs on RU-vid at least.
Absolutely. You *can* cheat it by cooking the rice and then chilling it for an hour (spreading it out in a thin layer to let as much moisture escape as possible) but leftover is ideal.
Yep lol, Fried Rice is made with 1-2 day old (cold) steamed rice, and a lot more seasonings and oils (e.g oyster sauce etc.) The lunch meat probably didn't help the flavor profile either lol
9:50 No, Kay did in fact saute rice, you were faithful to that step of her recipe. Though yes, if literally anyone else made it, they would use precooked rice. Or at least add liquid and let it cook in the skillet.
I like how you used so little salt and pepper just like Kay lol, I do think you are supposed to cook the rice first. “ I smells like feet” that makes it sound so appetizing lol. Love the videos.
what i like about you doing videos talking about the dishes from these questionable sources is that you actually try it and correct small things such as burnt vs brown garlic. 😅
One inaccuracy Kay doesn't use salt or pepper. Also your garlic wasn't fully carbonized yet so you needed to cook the garlic for longer to get that authentic charcoal bitterness in the dish.
I forgot to ask, I wonder if Honest Tries is going to try Kay's Baked Chicken in Mayonnaise?. 🤔? 7:27 Yes you're correct, my wife does it. But restaurants use fresh cooked rice.
Get a chest mount or helmet mount also a steadicam gimbal A Jamaican coconut rice recipe I like, fry dry rice in oil, after mixing in a paste of onions and garlic. Only fry it for a short time before adding the coconut cream and ginger
I'm so happy I found this channel and look forward to more content to come! Question: I know that it's part of your style almost now to record with one hand and do stuff with the other, but I think if you invested in a go pro down the line to help with the scenes where you have to hold your camera in your mouth could make life easier haha. Also if you had one of those cheap phone tripod mounts from like the dollar store or something it could help with some of the filming too I bet.
Fried rice is usually made with leftover rice. Rice pilaf the rice goes in raw so that it's toasted and then you cook it with a bunch of broth or water to cook the rice. Does this mean you will try all versions of Kay's fried rice? She's getting better.
Whew boy. You can make “Mexican rice” kinda like risotto… fry the raw rice in oil with some onion/garlic just to toast, then add tomato sauce and broth and seasonings. Makes it a bit creamy and really darn good. That way Mexican rice is a type of fried rice but not what we all call fried rice. I feel like Kay is trying do both ways but should have some stuck to one way. BUT. Hey as long as she likes her cooking. She seems to be really sweet and getting her kicks cooking so I hope she keeps learning. (Ps in my home we call “Mexican” rice just plain “rice” and yet we call white rice “white rice” lol)
2:15 Eeeek! NEVER do that to garlic! Of course, we’re replicating Kay’s horrible rice, but that’s so painful to watch. 6:36 ‘’smells like feet’’. Appetizing.
Fried rice you fry it first to brown it yes, but then you add water and boil it for 10 minutes to actually cook the rice. Then you add all the extras, eggs peas when the rice is nearly done.
I think Kay's son would have a "Trumbosis" if he ever ate actual good food with flavor since he grew up his whole life eating whatever random things his mother put together cook. 😂 And I don't even know what "Trumbosis" means. 😂
You are dedicated to accuracy, I give you that! When I make fried rice, I do it the way this recipe I found once says to do it: Day old steamed rice sauteed in oil, soy sauce, butter with sauteed minced garlic, onions, veggies, and protein of choice (I usually go with broccoli, corn, carrots, and eggs). I like to make chicken and spicy mayo (sriracha and mayo) on the side to go with it! Lol. Btw, just subbed. Your channel is so wholesome and fun!
Yeah, I've been meaning to bring in some megaman, so I'll do that. The next few videos are already queued up, so it might be a bit. Thanks for the suggestion!
Usually, if you were making fried rice, you'd boil it first. drain it, then fry the soft rice. But Kay didn't, that's why it was, "a bit crunchy." Being Honest Tries, I'd say you were correct to do it like she did.
Instant rice, instead? Sweet peas and not nearly so much, instead? The only fried rice I've had from various restaurants has never had meat, other than bits of scrambled egg, and it was a frozen peas and carrots blend (sweet and snappy peas).
Yeah I've always heard left over cooked rice is great for fried rice, usually left for a day so its dried out a little, plus it also no waste as all the rice gets used!
This whole recipe could be salvaged just by adding broth to the rice and garlic and steam it until it is done, then continuing the recipe as normal. And you know... season it with salt, haha
thank god that poor garlic didn't get turned into charcoal like with kay's video. kays son said he barely tasted it in the original video, i wonder if that meant it was even more bland than the version you made?
