Sudden downpours lashed Hong Kong on September 7, 2023, causing widespread flooding. The city saw its highest-level hourly rainfall since records began in 1884. Weather authorities issued the city’s longest ever black rainstorm warning, with the highest-level alert in force for more than 12 hours as of noon on September 8. The second-longest black rain warning was in 1999, lasting five hours and 47 minutes. Footage from various locations around Hong Kong shows torrential rainfall pounding the city.

Stayed in HK for quite sometime. Experienced T8 and T10 but have not seen this devastating flood and rain. Praying everyone is safe

man this is devastating. I traveled in Hong Kong for almost 1 month last 2014 and 2015. And I fell in love with this place. Hong Kong has always a special place in my heart. I hope everyone lives there will get through this challenges.

Save lives. Possessions can be repaired or replaced. I am glad no buildings collapsed or were washed away. That means they were piled to rocks and anchored to rocks. Plus HK is mostly rocky and massive earth landslides like in Japan, Germany, etc. are rare. In a world of wild weather, expect more floods. Rains are moving to land instead of falling in oceans.

That is how a group of Korean victims sadly drowned recently, by driving into an underpass area - with a roof ya - stalling there, and then the heavy rains poured in after them and filled it completely - hopefully a policy will be developed to warn people not to try those routes in these downpours, cuz here are at least two sets of footage of people doing exactly the same thing but hopefully getting through and surviving :(

Hong Kong just break the 24h accumulated precipitation record of Chinese cities, at 647.7mm. Last one is July 20th, 2021 Zhengzhou, at 645mm. Also the longest "black rain" weather warning period.

this sort of extreme weather is not very common. most typhoons will just cause normal flooding. the last time was more than half a century ago

香港,上了75歲的人,尤其是在港島住的人, 1957年,香港的颱風,(好像是"温 (WANDA)),在港島的胡文虎花國的右側山頭,狂風暴雨,沖塌它半個山頭,全部山泥帶水, 沖落下面大坑,淹滿當時相當濶的大坑渠,全部馬路,入路旁屋內, 泥水淹出至海旁高士威道,湾仔洛克道,也水浸,很是恐怖,當時大坑山上,尚有窮人住的木屋大區,我不記得傷亡數字. 全個銅羅湾的爛灘子,要成年才完全清理.後幾年有一颱風,成隻郵貨輪- 芝萬捿,也沖上長洲西面海灘,我剛讀預科,地理教師,帶我們去看這輪尚在沙灘上,真是奇觀.
