Thanks for tuning in! Should you like the video please don´t forget to subscribe!
Footage is from April 1998, 2 months before the closure of this fantastic and unique Airport. During the whole time checkerboard Rwy13 was in use. The approach was world famous. Upon reaching the so called "checkerboard", which used as a visual reference point on the final approach, the pilot needed to make a 47° visual right turn to line up with the runway and complete the final leg. The aircraft would be just 2nm from touchdown, at a height of less than 1,000 feet when the turn was made.
For many airline passengers on planes approaching and landing on Runway 13 at Kai Tak Airport, it became referred to as the "Kai Tak Heart Attack".

I got to fly into Kai Tak several times during the late 80's as a passeger. One thing that sticks in my mind is clearly seeing laundry hanging to dry as we flew by the apartment buildings.

My sister worked as a flight attendant for Cathay Pacific so I was able to sit in the engineer's seat in the cockpit on the approach to Kai Tak. My first time doing this I was 10 years old and I remember seeing people having dinner in their apartments, chopsticks and all. It was a surreal experience.

Todd B saw people eating their evening meal. Like all normal. Jets flying at eye level past their apartments and then the big turn so you don’t crash into Mount Victoria. And then driverless buses to the terminal.exhilirating

Correct choice of airline! CX cockpit crew all lived in HK so they flew into and out of Kai Tak much more regularly than others did!

@paulm.7422 6 лет назад
Few airports will ever match the excitement of Kai Tak! CX pilots were always masters at landing at their home base. They would often line up just left of the checkerboard before their final turn, in order to give them a few additional seconds for landing.

There was two published ways of doing the final turn. One was standard the other would start a litlle later so that you had to do a sharper turn which in turn would grant a bit more time on the straight final segment. Pure geometry in fact. Maybe that is what you are alluding to.

I lived in Kowloon during my early years, back then my dad and I we've always watched low passing planes from our balcony and guessed the planes' make from their sounds. Watching this triggers so much memories, I can even picture the scene vividly as my dad lit up cigarettes while sipping on a bag of iced Coke -- yes, we've had drinks served in transparent plastic bags all the time!

We landed in the early evening a couple of days after Christmas in 1995. The jetways were full and we parked on the apron and climbed down many stairs to get out of our 747. Standing on the apron, looking out over the bay, through the dusk there was a long string of lights in the sky, all landing lights of 747's! The jetways all had 747's facing the terminal and there were several more 747's like ours, parked on the apron. I had never seen so many 747's before and have not since. It makes sense though. We flew into Los Angeles in a smaller plane then switched to the 747 for the trip over the Pacific to Hong Kong. That trip was 27 hours, door to door. At the time the 747 was the long haul leader, having both capacity and range. Later flights were single hops in a 777 to/from Chek Lap Kok which reduced flying time to about 15 hours.

In the 70s and 80s, ANY flight over an ocean = 747! It was the long haul flight standard. I’m still sad I won’t ever fly in a 747 again, such an iconic experience and that plane is just HUGE! We saw on on the tarmac last year in Detroit (I think it was Korean Air) and my kids were a bit bemused at my overly enthusiastic excitement at pointing it out to them. 🤩

I first flew into Kai Tak on a DC8, including the extended version. The maneuver was safe but I was never really comfortable. Then when I flew the 747 it was a world of difference. The new technology of the airplane, made the turns before the checkerboard, much easier and safer. Never went beyond the checkerboard.

I too lived in Hong Kong and flew in and out of kai tak, but the view of a landing 747 from street level was the real shocker as you could see the tread on the aircraft wheels and the condensation on the fuselage.

I retired as a Travel Agent in the San Francisco Bay Area in 1998. I had only heard stories of the landing experience at Kai Tak Airport from a client or two, and I never had the opportunity to experience it myself. That was before RU-vid videos, and googling whatever you wanted to know about, and I was just sitting here daydreaming when I realized I should try to find a few videos, so maybe I can have a better idea of what it was like! Thank you for posting this.

I remember flying into Kai Tak on a Korean Airlines 757 at night in a rainstorm with wind knocking us around. When the pilot made his right turn, I swore, I swore the wingtip was going to clip a building. When I got off the plane, I didn't kiss the ground because it was dirty, so I kissed a wall in the terminal. Talk about a heart attack.

If you Google the Kai Tak site today, the city of Hong Kong has developed it into living space but they've kept the runway intact and have incorporated it into the neighborhood layout. They also restored Checkerboard Hill. I'm glad to see that they did that. Losing such an important part of Hong Kong's history would be sad and wasteful.

I recall flying in there perhaps a dozen times between 1990 and 1995. The final approach was west to east, while the runway runs north-south, so the plane is banking to the right as it is descending. I remember the huge Salem and Marlboro cigaret ads on the sides of buildings very close to the flight path. A very adventurous landing especially in a jumbo jet.

You are both correct and incorrect there. Runway 13 at Kai Tak used a heavily modified ILS called an IGS that worked much like an ILS but lead to the giant red and white checkerboard instead of the start of the runway where the localizer was. They flew the approach on autopilot right up until the last leg of the IGS approach then they disconnected the autopilot to fly the 47 degree right turn manually. Specialized simulator training to account for this ensured that flying into Kai Tak was considered a privilege to pilots

Had.a scary flight into Kai Tak during a storm shortly before it closed on a Virgin 747. The first attempt was aborted and we did a go around, same the second attempt and then again the third attempt. You were only allowed three attempts so we flew to Macau, sat on the tarmac for 3 hours before going back to Kai Tak. Some of the passengers were scared the pilot might take risks to land so as not to miss the passengers waiting to fly back to London. A woman next to me held my hand tightly on approach. We made it at the fourth attempt. Boy was I relieved.

What heard is only experienced pilots were allowed to make this approach. He or she had to have hours on a simulator, then get a check ride by a senior pilot familiar with the approach when making an actual landing. I think there was at least one botched landing where a 747 overshot and ended up in the drink. In any case, it's a stick and rudder landing..no autopilot landing here!

Imagine living in the buildings directly beneath the flight landing path, every 5 minutes 24/hrs a day hearing the plane engines. It's one of the "features" of living in that area! 😂
@goldcoinsbylow-rentvideos6242
It would be rough, no doubt, but flights didn't land/take off 24 hours a day. There was a strict curfew enforced from 1130PM to 630AM. Still, who wants to be woken up at 630 every single day by the roar of jet engines?
