Back in the early 60s when I learned this song (no videos, no digital recordings, no mag tape, just vinyl), what you do as a 5-4 pull off on the A string I did as a 5-4 slide with my little finger --I developed my first friction blister on my little finger as a result.

“Honky Tonk” is one of the very first riffs and rhythms I learned on guitar, too. That, and the “Peter Gunn” riff. It’s a blues shuffle in E, the most basic blues of all. Bill Doggett and his band wrote and recorded it in 1956, and I (along with the guys I learned from) heard it from The Ventures, on the “Walk Don”t Run” album, 1960. By then it had already been covered by several people, and is one of the most covered early R&B songs.

I had the first Ventures record in 1963 when I first got a guitar, and this was the Honkey Tonk I learned. Your performance is flawless! Great tone, too! Just like the record.

I really enjoy your videos. I grew up playing the Ventures' tunes at teen hops and my high school dances. I recently watched a RU-vid video of the Ventures' "Rap City" and immediately thought of you creating tabs and a backing track. The backing track makes this tune and would be a great addition to your next project; I'd have to buy it.

Another song to add to my list. Just need to finish up Because. So far, I have learned 12 of your songs, although several were ones that I played as a kid but a couple incorrectly which you helped me fix.Thanks for all the work you put into them and also into making the backing tracks. While I can and have used Garage Band to make my own, I cannot match your level of professionalism. Thanks, you are the best!
