Hoosiers is a 1986 sports film about a small-town Indiana high school basketball team that wins the state championship. The story is set during 1951/1952, when all high schools in Indiana, regardless of size, competed in one state championship tournament. It is loosely based on the Milan High School team that won the 1954 state championship.

I love the way all those young men looked into his eyes for leadership. “You reckon #4 will put up their last shot dad?”

When we first are introduced to Shooter he's telling a story about when he was playing in a sectional game for Hickory and he shoots for the last shot and misses. Thats the best story he has to tell at the time. After this scene we catch him in the hospital telling the new story to the nurse and what a success it was. Tremendous arc for this character - the heart of the film.

Maybe the best part of the movie. Shooters son saw how lost he was, just needed a little push in the right direction.

What makes this film work when many sports movies don't, or are cliche, is that the details and feel are right. You can understand the excitement and stress of the games and the pressure that Hackman's character is under. How he has to make split second decisions and evaluate all kinds of factors, bringing all his experience and wisdom to bear at just the right moment (and also battle his own character flaws). Hackman is so good that he disappears into the part of the coach. I thought he should have been Oscar nominated, but maybe people had just gotten used to him being that excellent that it didn't register enough at Oscar time. Hopper and Hershey are both memorable also.

a few little known facts about "Shooter". After he dried out he bought a 3rd hand Harley and took off across the country, trying to find himself. that played out rather badly so he found a cult, living on an abandoned oil tanker. His coaching abilities came in handy, in that cult.

So many great subplots to this movie. I read that "Hoosiers" was renamed "Shooter" in Europe. Nice double-meaning. I wasn't surprised that Dennis got a best supporting actor nomination. But why Gene didn't get nominated as best actor escapes me. One on-line review said Gene was asked to do too much. Well, that's all part of the story, isn't it, overcoming adversity?

Seems the best part of this is the shot of them running off. They cut across the camera on a short angle, which gives motion and grace to the team, expressing the triumph. Very good.

He was nominated for this. But Michael Caine won for Hannah and Her Sisters. But also Tom Berenger and Willem Dafoe we’re nominated for Platoon. Hopper was nominated for 2 oscars in his career. The golden globes nominated him in the same category for Hoosiers and Blue Velvet in the same year. I do like Hoosiers, but I liked him better in Blue Velvet.

So in Indiana in the 50's was it legal for offensive players without the ball to just stand in the lane for like 10 seconds?
@JStarStar00
@JStarStar00 10 лет назад
If you re-watch the clip they only stand IN the lane for about 3 seconds of game time (some of it is slowed down by slow-mo). Remember in 1952 they were playing with the old-style 'key,' only 6 feet wide vs. 12 for the modern 'key.' While the play was being set up, the picket fence guys (Rade and Everett) line up on the 'cutout' side of the key. Buddy brings the ball down and passes off to Jimmy, 'solo right.' Merle, the 'swing man' is down on the baseline. Buddy then runs down and joins Rade and Everett to form the 3-man 'picket fence.' As soon as that happens, Merle swings up around the picket fence, Jimmy hits him with the pass, he shoots, he scores, game over.
