The official horde mode discord is now up and running for questions, feedback, finding online games, etc. This link shouldn't expire: discord.gg/ZwASQMqQZS
I like the idea of two armies that were previously fighting each other decide to join forces after finding out they’re on a tomb world that they’ve awoken.
@@RushGammathe Astra Militarum already just chucks as many men as they can at problems anyways, and if any subfaction is fitting for an ‘imperium horde’, than the Kriegsmen make for a perfect fit!
One big monster/mech as an opponent with various smaller units floating around the map (maybe randomize these or something?) And have various tasks the rest of the army incapable of actually fighting the big bad can accomplish ie: a squad of Incursors blowing up a bridge/support beam to limit the Chaos Knight from closing in on your artillery, a squad of Bladeguard escorting a tech priest to an offline AA gun to deliver a massive blow to the knight but there's a Chaos Terminator Squad guarding it. Meanwhile the Chaos Knight is getting crazy random buffs based off which of the four gods is blessing it this turn. Could be some fun times.
That would be a fun thing to add as an option; if you roll doubles on your roll, add a unit from another Imperium faction table (depending on availability). So while you've been mowing down hordes of IG... then a Questoris Knight shows up because someone rolled double 6s.
I have a group of friends who have been passively interested in the lore of 40k but, with many other could-be-seen-as-competitive games, have a mean streak of “veteran player wants to teach people how to play -> veteran stomps new players to the point of unfun -> no one wants to play that game at all, with or without veteran”, the classic “Im just logging into the minecraft server and youve already gone to the End” dilemma. I think this is going to be a great way to teach people how to play without being salty and learn the game mechanics, and it genuinely sounds like a fun gamemode and am excited to try it. I’m probably going to draft up a list for all the armies my friends enjoy playing as and then try to take them into TTS and muck about.
@@dicedoom7162 its the more the issue of new players repeatedly losing without the chance to learn, creating a harsh skill cliff that many do not have the interest to climb
alright, i get that. to me though it is weird. i teach alot of people games and i always just try to have a balanced and fun game, try out fun tings or just play a narrative. i guess some people just have bad gaming friends@@ithofar
There are indeed too many people in the community who have their sense of self-worth wrapped up in whether or not they win at playing with toy soldiers. To a point where they'll feel good about curb-stomping someone so badly they quit the game in frustration. It's quite sad.
I love this kind of thing, I always prefer to team up with my friends than to fight them. Now I just need to buy another faction to fight. Great work on the objective decks and resource point systems, I can tell a lot of time and effort went in to those.
My gang and I have been playing Horde nonstop since we saw this video. We did a little bit of tweaking on the setup and turn order (we use one page rules turn order, with each unit playing until all units have gone once to end the round). We've had so much friggin fun! Though I will say, the misery dice giving Tyranids +1 to wound and hit was absolutely brutal, especially since we didn't let misery deck fall off. Round 3 had +1 to wound and hit, sustained hits, and shoot/charge on turns they advanced. So much fun!
Finally Full scale Heralds of Ruin! With this being a community project I'm really excited to see how it evolves. Custom misery decks for Specific Hordes could be fun, and it would be easy to combine this with Crusade rules so you can link games into a full campaign!
There used to be a similar game mode called meatgrinder! We played meatgrinder games for a couple of my friends birthdays. We played mixed imperium vs tyranids. And then mixed imperium and allied xenos (tau and eldar) against tyranids. We might have played it against orks too. Edit: okay after finishing your video there’s a lot more to your game mode, I’m super excited to try it!
This is awesome and I love it. I've been wanting to play with my son, but playing against each other doesn't go so well. We enjoy co-op boardgames quite a bit, so this will be a great addition. If I'm understanding the spawn table, it could just be a collection of datasheets rather than a singular faction. I have a ton of minis from games like zombicide that I might try to use with this mode. Just use them as proxies of various datasheets and make our own table.
You can totally do that. We tried to keep the horde a singular faction picked at start because it's easier to explain and artistically fits. But the horde tables are modular so should work just fine mixing them. Good luck and have fun.
This is awesome! Definitely want to give this a try, as I’m more of a co-op over competitive player, and who doesn’t love the battle against the insurmountable horde?
This sounds very fun, the idea of factions that would normally KOS each other having to work together so that they don’t get absolutely obliterated, I can imagine them winning, killing the horde, and then the imperium faction instantly killing the other factions.
I'm super hyped to see two PvE archetypes come out in quick succession- your Horde mode and Goonhammer's. It's almost as though people enjoy 40k....but also don't always want to play a '1 winner 1 loser' game. And the best bit is that your two versions are quite different. This is a good time for 40k fan content.
this sounds awesome!! I am thinking also for my wife that is not into the intense competitive strategy that normal 40k is. so good for new players learning the basics of the game!!
This is amazing!! I have a handful of coworkers that are into 40k. And my partner just started 40k for the first time, with Tyranids. Im definitely going to share this, and email you guys with the results!!
Me and a friend played this, and I must admit, a good reinforcements arrived roll basically saved the game! I had a Gravis captain at one wound and replaced him with a Land Raider Redeemer which torched the 20 termagaunts that were whittling him down.
Still would have to test this out but this might be really good to invite friends who don’t collect but are interested in playing, I’ll give it a shot and thanks for the format
my playgroup will be playing this as soon as we get enough models to do so, we currently only have two legal armies ( T'au & Necrons ) between the four of us despite having three other combat patrols still in the boxes
Oh man I love horde mode mtg! Ive been playing that for years - and been working on a warhammer version of it for about a year following a ruleset for such a thing appearing for warhammer aos in last year's white dwarf. My version has *several problems* with the so called ai (its currently only really balanced for melee) so I'm hyped for watching more than 4 minutes into this episode and giving it a shot.
FEEDBACK: My buddies and I played our first game of Horde mode and had fun but found a couple things that might need work. 1: due to the HEAVY rules with movement, it seems that (as the HORDE player) I’ll never have a Doomstalker on the table for more than 1 turn. Their range is 48” so movement happens which means they get wiped out one my next turn, right? That was a bummer. 2: going for flavor with spawning, seems like maybe the spawn roll should be halved for the first couple turns. One turn one I had 2 C’tan shards, the silent king, and 10 Immortals with a leader. Flavor wise I’d like to see smaller units show up first then bring the heavies later in the game. Thank you for your hard work on this and I look forward to trying more.
I feel like this will be a great way to dabble in some factions I don't own a full army of. I have a random 600 points of a faction that won't really work for a proper game, but this would let me get them to the table in a different way.
This is really cool, definitely going to play this some time this week. I’m gona have to print the cards on card stock asap. If you ever make nice cards to sell along with your merch I’ll buy them for sure 👍
Funny first: As a GSC player whose only goal in life is to do as many explosions as possible in a game, having the ability to do a Gundam-esque colony drop makes me so hype and happy. Actual comment: I hope this catches on. I stopped playing MTG because my mental health took a dive and as a result competitive environments from Modern to EDH are a mental mine field to Navigate. Only Horde and (non-douche) Archenemy were formats I could play, but they jsut weren't populate enough for me to stay in the hobby. So all that said, I truly hope and am rooting for to catch on. I really would like an option to play dumb silly fun in 40k that doesn't run the risk my inner Spike causing a panic attacks because the optimal line has been cut off by variance.
As a nerf HvZ player this is one of the best things I have heard in a very very very long time. I can't wait to play this! I have already told a bunch of folks in the nerf community who play 40k!
Horde armies should be limited to Nids, Orks and Chaos since you can use cultists, traitor guard, demons and maybe poxwalkers so it really gives that feeling of fighting against an unending tide which is what those 3 are typically described as, I couldn't see for example Eldar or any Imperium faction or Tau be used as the Horde (no not even if its pure Kroot spam for Tau)
Messed around with this a bit, and being a sadomasochist who actually plays AdMech, it struck me that this could potentially represent the PERFECT opportunity for 1 player entertainment with missions, AdMech is always looking for STC's, so go find them, roll a D6 to see where your going, urban? Jungle? City? Insert wherever to make your jam, second, assign your op4 armies to numbers on a D*, roll it up, suddenly your hunting for an STC on a snow world against orcs, or maybe your boiling your nuts off on a desert world fighting tau, its random, its fun, and it makes sure I am maximizing time on the table, no worries if you got extra people, they can join in, or hell, they can handle the bad guys, either way, your imagination is the limit within the framework you guys have already laid out
As someone who does not really have someone to play with I am really excited to try out the singleplayer variant! (As soon as my Tyranids are painted ._.) After playing Zombicide a lot I know how fun a game against an "AI" can be.
This sounds sick and definitely will try this out! After looking at the Battle Sister briefly it seems like it might need some patches. Crusaders and Death Cult Assassins should probably come in larger numbers since even a max squad size of 6 would still be in the 3-4 roll range, but both are coming in squads of 2 here. Crusaders also can take leaders so 6 Crusaders + Preacher could be in the 5-6 range. Retributors are also mostly marked as coming in squads of 10, but are currently locked to only squads of 5.
Thinking about it, I'm shocked that no one really thought of a co-op bridge between 'bought my first $100 of models' and a full army for 40K before. It just seems like a no brainer having a game mode where a vet can ease a new player into the game and the universe by helping them without helping their opponent. TBF though it never even crossed my mind until I saw this video, and I've been interested and perpetually stuck in that space for decades.
Have you guys tought about combining it with Crusade rules? Leveling up units, buying relics, permanent injuries. To have like a whole campagain like experience with your friends.
I just saw this and was talking to my friend about attempting to play this online using a virtual tabletop, cause there is no way me and him can meet up for in person games
Had a great game of it. so refreshing. Spawned magnus 3 times 😂 and had to turn on my teammate as he wouldn't share rp for me to win so I killed his unit. So we both lost. 😅 only change I'm making is air strike going to be old-school blast template + scater dice
Poorhammer: "for anybody who isnt over the age of 35..." Hey! Im not that old! Poorhammer: "and doesnt play silly card games that have ruined themselves over the years" ... Ok fair.
I explicitly don't play 40K / Warmahordes because i don't want to play something where I'm directly opposed to, and rewarded for being aggressive towards, my friends. Also the cost and the lack of players. I would love to give this a try, though I'm concerned that it would be a small community made smaller by it being a niche of a niche.
are the lower rolls empty for balance reasons or would it make sense for the spawn points to 'bank' if you cant spawn anything because imperial knights or you dont have enough small units. Probably best to always spawn as often as possible than to bank points to try and spawn something big. Thoughts commenters?
I almost got my 6k of imperial knights built. I would absolutely love to be the villain in this. This seems so much more fun than surprising them with one army as big as everyone else's collection combined in a one v all match play.
