P.S. We cranked up the Expo on the Elevator to about 50%, and there was some level of relief, but there's still something going on with this plane. When we figure it out, we will be the first to report our findings...it's still a beauty!
UPDATE: We found out the ELEVATOR axis was swapped on the AS3X, correcting in the WRONG direction! We never got it fixed, but Horizon Hobby sent out a replacement for Esteban.
Also, They're NOT HXT-PH connectors, they're JST-PH. Sorry guys!

Coulda got this the other day. Instead I got the sports cub s. I figured i would get that one instead because my first was an aero commander which was a beauty and I wrecked in the first flight into a million pieces. It was a sad day. Not so smart to get for a begginer whoes never flown. After learning on the champ I figured getting the sport was the next level up for learning ailerons. After i get this down its back for getting this or the aero commander again. Its a gorgeous plane! Nice unbox/reveiw/flight!

Thanks Michael! It's so tempting to jump from a simple plane to a more advanced one before you're ready. I did it with only very marginal success with my Hobbyking Lancaster. I think once you kinda get the feel for flying, it's just in our nature to want to go out and buy a more awesome plane :) What I've learned is that the easier to fly planes, are also some of my favorites!!!

Its been a while since I last watched one of your videos. You were looking to get a nice place in the country with room to fly....did that work out ? I moved on from flying UMX Sport Cub S and UMX Timber to flying T-28 3 cell (44inch I think) and my favorite now - the E-flite Leader 480 precision aerobatic (about 44 inch I think) 3 cell. Thank you for the advice you gave me in my 'early days' !

I had to reglue both my main gear aswell and red sharpie matches the paint on the wheel pants pretty well. I just got the umx Mig 15 and the first thing I thought when I picked it up was I love the size of this box it seems half the size of the Cirrus it's great for throwing in the car!

Yea, my first landing the left gear came off as if they didn’t put much glue on it. Was no big thing. Mine flies the same way. I was going to put more expo in the elevator but haven’t done it yet, I’m sure it’ll help. But I agree Brian it flies good.

I have about 10hours of flying on this. Plane feels better in general with a larger (450 mha plus ) battery. Very twitchy until decent airspeed then it's all good. My favorite UMX in the air

Hi Brian did you ever sort out how to improve the sensitivity/twitchiness to the elevator. I have the umx turbo timber and decided to buy this cirrus. Very different to fly so could you give me any tips on setting up the radio gear, rates, expo, mixing etc to improve performance of this aircraft? You’re still my favourite guy love your reviews. Phil - don't hate me for admitting this, but we had a FLAW in our unit...the Stabilization was correcting the elevator axis int he WRONG direction! This was Esteban's plane, my friend, but he was not persistent enough, so it took FOR-EVER, but to his defense...Horizon was not great to deal with on this one. They initially replaced the multipurpose brick, but it had TWO axis reversed, and since we had NO way to flip them back, we were screwed! Ultimately, Horizon Hobby DID make it right to Esteban by offering him to get full credit for the plane, and they would require that he CUT IT UP!!! I was not really happy with Horizon over this plane...but it was Esteban dealing with them, not me. He ended up with a Cirrus SR22t 1.5, which is WAY better. I was very disappointed when they couldn't get this one right. What a beauty, and what a mess... Here's what to expect if you have stabilization going the wrong way... Turn on the plane and transmitter as usual. Lift the plane and watch from the side. Secure the plane safely, and give a small amount of throttle to activate the AS3X (Usually 25%), then move it on the pitch axis, and you'll see the elevator respond OPPOSITE what the direction the tail boom is moving, if it's working correctly. Now do this for the other two axis...ailerons, and rudder. If they all work, the plane should be working well.

I've run into this on other UMX planes with SAFE Select. I noticed they're automatically assigned to GEAR / Ch 5 by default, but if you want to change that to another channel, it's kinda like pulling teeth to make it work. An unusually irritating issue with Horizon Hobby product...

Would you recommend the Umx timber or timber x 1.2 for Simi beginner? I’ve have flown other planes but I’m a little rusty. Will the umx be as much fun to fly in the long run?

yes, the UMX is great, but I can't say much about the 1.2m, since I don't have one (....yet). As for the longevity of the enjoyment you'll experience, I think it depends largely on your environment. If you fly at home, in a smaller yard, then the UMX will be great for long work days were you get home only to beat the sunset by 10 minutes, while the 1.2m is gonna be impossibly to enjoy, as you'll be 25-30 minutes from your flying field, so keep this in mind as you get ready to decide.

The Carbon Cub S+ is nice, but only if you can tolerate the ridiculous SAFE GPS+ (or whatever they call that GPS garbage)...it's a huge pain to setup, then she flies like a dream!!! I want one, but probably won't get one as I'll possibly get a Hangar 9 Carbon Cub SS ??? As for the FMS Super Cub...it is tempting!

Shhhhhh, don't tell Megan!!!! That plane would be one of the larger ones, but not the largest. I still think the 2.6m sail planes, and my BOT (117") would be the biggest wingspan....the longest would be the A330-600 for sure, at about 6 feet long.

J3 Cub, but I have to preface this comment with the fact that the Cirrus UMX is discontinued, and it wasn't MINE...it was my buddies, and we did have an issue with it from the factory. If she would have been mine, I would have added flaps, and made it AWESOME, just like I did with the J3 Cub ;) That being said, the J3 was a better fit for this size class.

Any idea on why mine sputters on full throttle?? It runs smooth for about 5 seconds then it starts to have that sputter sound like the battery is giving out. Batteries are good. Checked about everything I could think of. I used the IX12 transmitter. Maybe I setting is off or something. Any suggestions would be much appreciated man!

brain Hello. I just got a ASW28 and i am set back by the wing connection how do you get the flaps to work from one line. ??? the manuale is not a great help. can you ,explain how this is done.

I understand you want to use flaps, and I understand which plane we're talking about (Volantex ASW 28, right?), but I'm not sure I understand your question totally. There are two channels, minimum, needed to run ailerons and flaps. You can run a "Y" cable from one channel on your receiver, out to each of the ailerons, but with the flaps, it's not always so easy. When you run ailerons, they "run the same direction, while flaps, when mounted symmetrically, will need to run in OPPOSITE directions. This is tough because the flaps servos are already molded into the wings, right (I can't remember for certain)... There are a FEW ways to deal with this... 1) Flip the mounting direction of ONE of the two servos.2) Use a servo Signal Reverse for only ONE of the two Flap servos3) Buy a "REVERSE" servo, which will operate in the opposite direction4) Make a standard servo into a REVERSE servo ...any of these methods will help you to get your flaps to go the same direction. I hope this answer helps. Also, if you could ask the question on the video, from which I'm discussing a topic, with a Time Stamp... like @ 2:45 for example, I can jump right to the area where I've managed to confuse you...LOL...and I can try to clarify better. My left main popped out in mine. It also seems tail heavy for landing. The tail sinks quite a bit and I've got the battery shoved almost completely in the nose.

I wonder if a larger pack might do the trick? Since this plane isn't mine, and the weather has been really bad, I might not get a chance to try it really soon, but I would like to try to fly this plane with a larger lipo (or two of the same???).

I wish more had the opportunity, but many people get pretty nervous about this sort of thing. It's great for us, since we have 4 kids, and we want to be together, when I'm not working...so leaving to go to a field out in the middle of nowhere just deosn't appeal to me, despite being a lot safer bet ;)

The umx cirrus flys amazing but the main landing gear brakes every single flight no matter what i do. I started with my foam safe ca, after several attempts at landing the plastic piece got pushed in. I tried hot glue and had the same results. My landings have all been very smoth but im having to repair after every flight :(

I think you might try using some Mucilage. What I want to try is that silicone stuff they use to mount the Receiver Bricks...that stuff would give just the right amount, but I can't find it anywhere.

I noticed it automatically sets itself to negative -130 on throttle cut. I do the same thing and change it to -100 but I wonder if -130 is an absolute cut or something like that though it seems -100% is a pretty definitive number.

I think it's a "kill" switch setting used for gas planes. If you set your throttle for 0% with gas, then the engine will still idle...but I never fly gas planes. That's what I can come up with at least.

Brian Phillips back in the day I’d have idle set with the throttle trim all the way up and with the throttle all the way down it would be at high idle and then bringing the throttle trim all the way down would kill the motor. That’s just how I did it back in the day.

Yeah, that's what I've heard. It's pretty cool what we can do with a programmable transmitter these days! I really like throttle cut. If you really get down to it, being cut by the prop on an RC plane is one of the most "REAL" threats, in terms of safety. I have been cut once, but it was by a UMX plane (my UMX aero commander, if you're curious now...and it was a little tiny knick)

Weather has been pretty horrible here since I filmed this video. I plan to get some more footage when the weather starts to break :) Sorry about the delays... P.S. Our new house is hopefully gonna be done in a couple months, then I can get things moving again. We're amazed by how much life is sucked out of us by building this house. We know it will be worth it, and hope you can understand.

Hello I just came across one of your videos and the area where you were flying looked very familiar. When I tried to figure out where you were I came across your work place in Waukee it is about 4 miles from our Des Moines Modelairs field on T ave. Those are totally different planes! I'd encourage you to get the Cirrus, but that's because I have a soft spot for commercial airliners :)

The Timber - It's GREAT!!! The cirrus is fun and cool, but won't fly as good, in my opinion, and the UMX EDF's are always a disappointment!

I have power lines at my new property, and it's a bummer...especially the $35,000 price tag for them to get installed :( I wish there was a way that we could have had them installed underground....but the $35,000 was enough for us...

I think the Timber UMX is an amazing plane. It seems to beat any other UMX by almost any measure, but this plane is nice too. I just want to figure out a solution on the elevator "passive aggressive" tendencies...

Yeah it seems to oscillate a lot and in safe mode the pitch and bank angles and up an down are very slow have to run it in high rates but when on asex I like it how it flys just that on landings are harder

Even though it's cold outside I normally get 9 to 10 minutes with my umx timber and carbon cub ss I put the 300 man venom battery in the cirrus and its dead at 6 minutes was thinking the prop is to much for motor?

Brian in selling the umx cirrus at a swap meet on Saturday and whatever I get back for it is going towards the carbon z Cessna 150 and flyzone dhc 2t turbo beaver and also looking at getting the viper jet in the spring time and wouldn't recommend the f16 unless you have a good sized not so busy road to land on my friend has one and he doesnt like it after the 5th flight it's very fast

I have one of these planes and I have to say it is not good, the landing gear is a bit of a joke and the CG has to be PERFECT for it to fly well at all. I guess that is the problem when you try to replicate a full size plane in UMX with more care for looks than flying performance. Also one of the Aileron servos died after about 6 batteries but that is just bad luck I guess. Cool video though Brian as usual.

Yeah, I did that, but there's definitely something going on. Turning it WAY up does help to subdue this strange "bi-polar" response, but I tend to think there's something not quite right on this plane. I've had a lot of UMX planes, but this is first I've experienced this symptom with.

Just found your comment from 3 years ago - there WAS a problem with this plane. The AS3X was correcting in the wrong direction. We never got it fixed. HH sent a replacement, but it too was backward.

Why did you put in expo? Where does it say to ad expo? No where in the directions does it say to ad expo. Its already baked into the flight controller/RX. That's probably why you have trouble with the elevator and porpoising. Dump the expo.

Nope, we found that the AS3X was correcting in the wrong direction for elevator. Horizon Hobby later replaced the brick, which was ALSO wrong ! We were pissed, and made a video about it, but I never uploaded it, since it was not a great video... Then we got a whole new Cirrus SR22T UMX, and it flew just as glorious as it's big sister ;) We just had a lemon and were fighting AS3X. Very tough to spot on a UMX!!! P.S. My buddy Esteban had to really fight to get it resolved. Horizon Hobby should have offered to replace it right away, if you ask me. P.P.S. Expo will cover a plethora of touchy items, in my experience, but remember, expo is HIGHLY subjective.

The service I receive from Horizon Hobby was miserable and disappointing. i sent 5 messages regarding a matter. And it took them a long time to answer. In addition, it is clear from last message that they did not check any details available to them before writing me an unsatisfactory answer.

I'm sorry they treated you badly. We too had a bad experience with THIS plane. I don't want to bash them too much though, as they're one of the few companies that will try to make things right, if they don't go well. I can't say the same for many RC companies. ...HOWEVER, MotionRC & Aloft Hobbies have both been phenomenal to work with! I wish you better luck with Horizon on your next interaction.

I don't agree with any of the egregious and counter-constitutional FAA overreach, if you ask me...BUT to be clear, nope this plane isn't heavy enough to count, and if your quad is less than 0.55 lbs, then neither is yours.
