I look forward to your new series but I hope you won’t delete the original beginning reloading videos. As I commented elsewhere, your beginning series was my primary learning tool when I started reloading a year ago. One of the things I really appreciated about your videos in that series was that you took the time to really explain what you were doing and why. When you film your new series I hope you will take the same approach, as I really think that’s what set your series apart from other videos I watched. Don’t worry too much about keeping your videos short. If it takes 90 minutes to go through something thoroughly, then so be it. Anyway, thanks again for your videos. For my money, yours are the best videos on reloading out there and the best content on RU-vid.
That’s awesome of a viewer to send that to you, and I’m sure it will make a great series. With that said using that as a everyday press I think you would definitely be going backwards from the Redding T-7 in both function and quality. Great info for sure, and awesome of a viewer.
This is the kit that I started with! I had a bunch of issues with the powder measure, I ended up getting the pistol drum for it, and it works well for pistol loads. Another issue I had with the measure was the paint inside of it started getting very "gummy" and sticky, so I took a dremel and ground out all the paint with a cut off disk, and coated it with graphite. It works so much better now, amd is much more consistant!
As someone who has just recently purchased one of these kits, I can honestly say your video is a Godsend. I'm getting ready to start loading .300 Win Mag (because screw having to buy it at $45 per box) and this has given me some proper insight as to what I need to keep, what needs to be upgraded and what can be let go. Johnny, I've watched your entire series of new beginners to reloading videos. And it was awesome that's how I learned how to reload and love it. I'm looking forward to the new series that you're going to make because there's always room for improvement and I'm sure I'll learn tons more as of you saying you learned lots more since you made that old series. I've been reloading now for probably two years or so. I pretty much only stayed with 9 mm 40 Smith & Wesson and 300 Blackout and are looking forward to more calibers in the future. But I have used Hornady one shot when I reload the 300 Blackout and I actually love that lube. I think it's super easy and awesome doesn't take but a couple minutes of waiting and you're ready to go. Just my opinion thank you for your passion and teaching the art of reloading.
I went back and forth on this kit and the Lee quick change press. I knew some components in the hornady kit weren't that great so I ended up going with the Lee quick change press and buying the better components seperate. Havent looked back. Love the videos!
I'm still saving to get me a single stage press. I hope one day I am in a position to be able to give others things like that. That's just awesome. Helps keep up hope for humanity. Great vids. I'll definitely be rewatching once I can get a setup of some sort.

I'm a lefty but also ambidextrous but mainly a lefty. But I used my brother in laws perfectly fine. I loved it. Just put the shell in with my left and like you said is nice due to the offset very easy and open. Then just pull the handle nice and easy with my right. I may be used to that sort of thing since I drive a manual car every day. But I think it works great for a lefty. Lots of leverage where even non dominate hand doesn't have a problem.
I've never even considered reloading..... Then I sit here watching your videos for reasons unknown other than enjoying the content and watching you shoot and log groups (probably because I have OCD and like the tediousness of making a round and keeping a log). Now I may actually start reloading. Any links to the RCBS kit a friend of mine said it's probably the nicest.
Left handed reloader here. WE ARE NOT VICTIMS! We’re used to working in a right-handed world. My personal theory is the vast majority of port-siders are much better at “being ambidextrous” due to this lifestyle. Anyway, my Lee Classic Turret press and my newer Hornady Lock n Load AP both have similar offsets and it’s no problem. Suggestion #1: the assembly manual for my LnL AP made a huge deal out of de-greasing the press and, especially, the powder feed. Hornady suggested using their One Shot Gun Cleaner and Lube so I took a trip into Bass Pro to pick some up. Didn’t want to void any warranties by using something else and it worked fine. Moral: a quick look at the manual isn’t always a bad thing. Suggestion #2: if, in a few weeks, you even think you might stay in the Hornady ecosystem just go ahead and pick up some extra lock rings and LnL bushings. Cheaper in the 10 pack and worth it. I just pop the dies and bushings out and store them in a different plastic shoe box per caliber like I do with my Lee turrets. So damn handy to have them ready to go next time, just pop them back in. Can’t wait for the updates on this item!
Hi All/Johnny,I am the biggest Hornary "Fan" there is, same with Glock…I have the AP and iron press, I am happy with them, I have done about 1500 308 cases with my case lube and I am about half way on the can. But even better is the Guncleaner from Horandy, that cleans off that gel/oil they put on the dies, so that it does not rust, like a charm.I love your videos, keep up the good work…
Johnny, I am left handed and have been using my kit for two years now. I love it. I use my right hand to work the handle and my left hand to handle the brass, bullets, etc.
Same here, the work area facing open to the left is perfect for me. All my components are on the left and I stand/sit slightly to the left of the press. Just pull the lever that happens to be conveniently located out of my left handed working area with my right hand.
I bought this kit. For the most part its good to go. Good press. Leftys are actually at an advantage with this press. They can use their right hand for the press handle and use their left hand to handle the brass and bullets which require more motor skills. In short, economy of motion. I own a MEC, Im right handed, and run the press lever with my left and feed brass and bullets with my right. Once again, economy of motion. My left hand is stupid, my right hand is smart. Press has good positive priming. If you didnt get a separate arm for the primer, call Hornady, they will send you one. Powder drop. You hit it right on. It needs a thorough cleaning. I store mine with a used dryer sheet in it to eliminate static. It is accurate though, throwing dead on for ball and short cut extruded, but cuts grains terribly on something like Varget. I clean mine with brake clean, and lube it with graphite. I also polished the inside of the drop to make it more consistent. The scale is trash. I tossed mine. Ill stick to my 505. I have a CM1500 that I use for trickling loads. Much easier. I need to buy a second so I can increase my productivity. Hand primer sucks. Id rather prime on press. I purchased a RCBS bench primer that uses tubes and Ill never look back. The rest: Manual good, but lawyered down. One Shot, good for pistol brass. Trickler, cheap but it works.
Wow, good goodies in that kit. An improvement in any kit would be the inclusion of an inertia bullet pulling hammer but i sure cant fault this kit. Nice. Great vid JRB.👍
Really appreciate your videos, brother! My friends think I’ve gone mad but this is what I call genuine entertainment, works the mind and the soul. After a long day, nothing beats lighting up the pipe and relaxing to some reloading videos. Yours are of the highest quality.
This is my first reloading kit. Right from the start I knew the trickler felt like it was cheap or rather cheaply made. As I turn the trickler knob the whole trickler would move about my reloading bench. All I did to correct the problem was flip over and fill the bottom end with silicone. The same silicone you put around your windows. I let it sit overnight roughly 24 hours. Now the trickler works really good. It has some nice weight to the bottom end of it.
I bought the Hornady lock and load classic single stage deluxe kit a year or so ago. I'm new to reloading and liked all the offerings in the kit. I've finally got my reloading room set up and my press active. I'm just prepping brass and making blanks right now, but will be making live rounds soon. I'm a lefty, but I haven't had any issues with the press. I've never used any other press, so I can't compare, but so far so good with this one. I like the powder measure set up. Seems to work well, easy to set up and use. I bought the micrometer adjustments for them along with a second powder measure so I don't have to keep changing from pistol to rifle. The micrometer adjustments work well, I was testing it and getting it to throw in 10th of a grain increments, and jot down the setting, change it, and come back to it reliably. My kit came with a different hornady digital scale and I think a beam scale, I don't recall, but I do have both. I have a frankford arsenal digi scale somewhere, but I can't find it! Scales seem to work well. I haven't used them a lot, so we will see how they fare over time. For a primer system, I went with the Lee auto bench prime system. I've tested it and so far so good. But I have the hornady one as back up if needed. I didn't use the one shot lube. I went with dillon case lube instead, I like that the dillon stuff is just lanolin and alcohol. I've also just been using straight lanolin, it's a little sticky lol but works! I like the lock and load concept and the die bushings. I'm loading several calibers and want to shift between them without too much hassle. I plan on getting a progressive press later this year, deciding between the hornady one and the dillon 650. I'm looking forward to your redo of your beginner series. I've learned alot from your first run, and as you mentioned, you've grown as a reloader, so I am excited to see the new run!! thanks again for the great channel!

I Just get a Thompson center compass in 6.5 and going back and watching all your 6.5 Creedmoor videos take notes on loads to test out.
Spot on. I started with that kit and the scale and hand priming tool are the weak links. Went to the RCBS universal priming tool and the same Amazon scale (old version) you're using. And then I replaced the funnel with an RCBS version with various caliber attachments. Look forward to the new video series to see what else I may learn.
When I see a firearm tutorial video and see a video that's beyond 20-30 minutes, I tend to be iffy about watching the entire video from beginning to the end. I can actually say that Johnny is fun to listen to. It's like going over to a buddy's house who's also into guns but are ahead of you in the game 😂👌
I use this kit and the priming attachment is auto, basically uses a spring arm to retain primers and pushes out of the way with the ram/priming cup in the full up position

Your Beginners Guide is great. It helped me get started again after not reloading for 15 years. The Lyman scale SUCKS. I sent 3 of them back and bought the Waoaw scale and love it. Bought the Waoaw because of your videos.

I have the Igauging Absolute 0 calipers with Bluetooth and they are Awesome. They have a large display and also read in fractions. Mine were 40 bucks and at that price, you can't beat them.
I’m a big fan of hornady equipment. I use the AP Progressive for pistol loads, and the Iron Press for Single Stage Rifle loading, as well as the 50BMG for larger caliber loads. I haven’t ever bought the kits, but I do thoroughly enjoy the hand primer. To be fair I haven’t used other brands, but it beats priming on press in my experience. I’ve been holding out for a bench mount from Hornady, but I’m happy with the results of the hand held. I agree the trickler looks dinky, but I opted for their larger quick trickler that has two speeds based on which knob you turn for trickling. It’s another expense, but a good piece of kit in my opinion. I also exclusively used One Shot until I started using the homemade blend due to suggestion from many people. It works well, but costs much more comparatively. Looking forward to your thoughts throughout the rest of the series.
Please do a follow up beginning reloading series! I know this video is a year old but the first series was super helpful and I don’t feel like you ever stop learning with reloading
Can't wait to see the updated series. I went with a lee turret for my first press, quickly returned it, and upgraded to a T7. If I started with one of these I doubt I'd have upgraded so quickly.

I have enjoyed all of your videos, and I'm looking to get into reloading. Your beginner series videos are great, and you could probably make a DVD that many people would purchase. So I vote for a remake!
Harbor Freight calipers are really good, I'm comparing them all to my Mitutoyo. Digital calipers are handy as heck with the Hornady OAL comparator. I like my lanolin/alcohol spray and Imperial Wax but have read amazing results with Forster sizing oil.
i love this press. had it for i think 12 years and have easily over 10k rounds through it. love the bushings so easy to change out. had a rock chucker before and hated redoing the dies.
The hornady GS-1500 is a good digital scale that I've been using for a couple years. It comes with a nice powder pan and a calibration weight. It hasn't let me down.
JRB Thanks for the review! 90% of my stuff is red. I have that hand primer and it sucks! Be careful to not over-seat primers! THERE IS NO STOP!!!! I only use it for a backup if I screw up the small primer auto primer slide on my LNL progressive press. I Use the RCBS bench primer for large primers. Some things I think you will end up with is a bushing for every die you use. They are just too handy to set and forget! I even changed out the threaded bushing in my RCBS single stage press. Another is the micro adjust powder cylinder thingy. Very accurate even with small extruded powders like IMR 8208 XBR. However, I don't use it for large extruded powders. I have to mention that the manual states you should clean the powder drop thoroughly before use. I think you will appreciate the One Shot lube. It lasts a long time and I don't get shoulder dents. Very thorough and well thought out video as usual. Its like you practiced it once and then re-did it! LOL Thanks again
Johnny, on the subject of value, you forgot to mention one detail. There is a rebate with that kit for 500 bullets! There are some decent ones in the list for you to pick from. That has the potential value of $80.00 - $100.00. That makes the total purchase really attractive! Like you, I have the ReddingT7 and I am thinking the rigid 'O' frame in the single stage is going to make bumping cases back more accurate and consistent due to the lack of flex in the frame. The T7 turret does move a bit. I'd be interested in your finding as you progress with the series! As always, thank you.
I have been reloading since 1964..I use. RCBS-HORNADY- MEC RELIADERS...AND BUY NEW RELOADING BOOKS FROM Nosler-sierra-Hornady...I never buy factory..unless I need new brass..or need a new untested (my shop) bullet that is new on the market...I am just ole fashioned..but love hunting and target practice...be Wise..be safe..Happy Trails..pel..Wichita. Really looking forward to this new series. The original beginner series helped me a ton. I'd say grab the priming arm that you can prime on the press. I got the one fir Lee press and it works great once you build that muscle memory. I wont hand prime again. If you're interested in selling that manual I'd be interested.

I was wondering if you’d consider doing some shorter videos on specific tools such as how to set things up and what you recommend. Sort of like you are planning to do with the scales but with case trimmers dies etc. That way if we are just wanting to learn about a specific thing we don’t necessarily have to watch a full reloading video. I'm a lefty and don't have much issues with using the same press, but this was my first press so I just learned to use it as is. Thanks man love you channel!!
I have switched the lever on my Rockchucker from side to side for various reasons and I never felt like pulling the lever with my non-dominant hand was an issue.
@@CaveWyatt I am right handed, but after trying it both ways I actually preferred pulling the lever with my left hand. It frees up your dominant hand to manipulate the case, powder, bullet, whatever which usually requires a little more dexterity and hand eye coordination anyway. Plus it saves some wear and tear on your dominant hand when your doing some heavy resizing, primer pocket swaging, or depriming buckets full of range brass for hours on end.
Juiceman That is an absolutely valid argument. It’s exactly why I don’t mind using right-handed presses. Though I wonder how many righty’s would see it your way.
@@silentbob267 yeah I'm right handed and pull the lever with my right. I've done it for a while now that I have good coordination using my left hand to move cases and helping with bullet seating.
My Lyman scale is also a couple 10th of a grain off all the time. It was causing havoc with my loads! I have gone back to using my Lee Balance scale. Hoping to get another electronic scale in the future. Thanks for the video.
You don't want to throw light loads with the rifle rotor & metering insert it will scratch up the inside of the rotor. Anything under 10 grains you want to use the pistol setup. 76highboy has a great video on how to use this And the baffle is only necessary for certain shapes of powder granules. I'm sure you have figured this out by now this is mainly for other viewers who will watch this. I bought like a 20 pack of the lock n load inserts, love them. Also 76highboy has a video on how to setup these, a good tip is with the powder measure he recommended using a slightly larger rubber o ring. Worked out great for me. Checkout his series of videos on the hornady lock n load AP press. I learned a ton. Thanks for the video, good info. Like the comparison on the priming tools, I haven't had an issue with mine but I am interested in the CPS primal rights really nice priming system thing for precise priming.
Great video and a honest review. Im a big hornady fan but i wont be getting that hand priming tool. Ill get the rcbs. Im loading on a single stage rcbs from 1971 that was my grandpas setup. Ive just about burned through my first can of one shot lube and i would say i got 4 or 5 hundred 5.56 cases out of it but i also put on more than needed. I would think you could get maybe twice that if it wasnt put on so thick. Looking forward to seeing some grendel rounds loaded on this new setup. You might even have to compare accuracy between the hornady and arbor press in the 6ppc. Looking forward to more ppc vids
the lock-n-load single stage press is the best out there. so good i bought an Hornady AP press a few months later single stage for smaller projects like .308/ 30-30, .357 mag and the AP press for pumping out .223 or 9mm. LOCK-N-LOAD is the way to go.
Good information thank you. You guys and girls are so lucky on price. Kit cost in Australia $700-800. For the same classic deluxe kit. reloading is not cheap here.
You’re a wealth of knowledge. Without your videos I would likely still be floundering wondering wth is going on. I have the classic lnl kit from a few years back. Have to agree the scales are junk, trickler could use a bit more mass so it stays put, agree with the so called primer tool. I ordered some $30 ubunti (or something like that) calipers from Amazon and have been impressed - less slop than my mitutoyo’s at work, al be it without the carbide jaws. Keep up the excellent work my friend!
With me powder measure the tube cracked. I ordered another one and it did the same thing. So I’ll be watching to see if yours dose. I may just be doing something wrong. Thanks for all the help I’m still just getting in to it and watching your videos have been a big help for me not to blow my face off!
Did you keep powder in the powder measure all the time? I've heard some of them can crack after long exposure. I always empty mine since I use so many different powders so I've never been able to test that for myself.
