I wonder if the judge was a victim or have dealt with multiple rape cases, cause she even pointed out how people are blind to the offender's nice side and use it to determine if the incident really happened.
@@soloholo4953 If Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis did the right thing much earlier, they would at least accept that Danny Masterson is no longer their friend. I hate to say this, but I need to say it. Character letters about the nice person the perpetrator once was, do not matter in the eyes of the victims who do not know or think about Danny Masterson in that way. Especially if Danny Masterson's r*pe victims _were_ his friends before they became his victims. April 18, 2024, 9:23am
I mean they were asked to write what THEIR experience were with him. I mean its is the judges job to give out a fair sentence and it is their job to tell the truth. I don't like the idea of mobbing on people for telling their experience with just because they did something bad. Someone doing one thing bad does not mean everything he did was bad. I think the judge knows what he did and he was checking about the risk and the tendency of this happening and how obvious it was. If people want rapists to get lifetime sentences then i am down but it is cringe to get mad at someone for literally telling their relationship with someone else.
They don't make themselves do that lol, they just don't have a huge team on standby to make these videos to do their make up. It may be in part them trying to look more relatable, but I imagine a lot of it is just this is how they normally look before they go under the brush for 4 hours.
@@drankydrank1 They protected him for YEARS. The rapes happened around 20 years ago, the victims were also scientologists, the cult threatened and controlled them into staying silent. they were also attackign everyone supporting the victims while the case was happening, and trying to interfere in the trial and tamper/intimidate the witnesses. They also knew MAsterson did it, he admitted to scientology that he did.
@@drankydrank1 Masterson and all 3 survivors were members of the church of scientology. Scientologists don't trust government bodies and heavily discourage law enforcement getting involved. They have their own internal process to report crimes and transgressions. The women reported the assaults to a Scientology Ethics Officer. Because Masterson was a contributing member in "good standing" and a pretty big career, Scientology covered for him. He paid one of the victims 400k in restitution along with paying money to Scientology to provide classes to help should that woman's child ever have any emotional impact from the assault. There are also letters from one of the survivors mother's to the current "head" of Scientology asking for justice for her daughter. Scientologists also have fairly routine sessions to help them " get clear" that are almost like confessionals in some regards ---- and from what I gather --- masterson confessed to doing it on those. So yeah - it happened - just scientology was covering for him because it's bad press and they don't want their image being muddied.
it’s so weird, ashton and mila are both very involved with helping sexual abuse victims and children and trafficked people . for them to do this is so odd.
I REFUSE to acknowledge that this is an apology video if they're not playing the ukulele. Colleen Ballinger has set the bar so high for a proper apology videos and it should be the new standard for another to come.
True. If a wacky instrument is not involved, it doesnt count. Some variety would be great to see too, maybe someone will break out the banjo or even a didgeridoo
So I actually have a childhood friend who ended up murdering a women in cold blood. In my experience it's hard to separate the person you knew vs the person they became. It feels super weird and tbh while I disagree with thier statements I can understand it. It's tough to separate once your in that situation where someone you respected turns out to do something terrible. Just giving another perspective
I can understand and respect that. I kinda feel like people who know/care about someone convicted of serious crimes like rape/murder are kind of victims of the lies the perpetrator told. The perpetrator put forward the idea that they were a good person and wouldn't be capable of it. So to find out that they were in fact capable of that and they did it can be a bit of a mindf*ck. That being said, I'm not defending Mila or Ashton. It's one thing to feel conflicted about how a friend of yours turns out to be a predator, it's another thing to try and defend them. It's callous to the victims. Full stop.
@khaleesireyna731 Yea good point I get that. I'm not defending them either but unless you've been in that situation it's just weird to get around you know. They made a mistake but that doesn't make them terrible people imo
Dude what. I had one best friend turn out to be a groomer and im still absolutely emotionally devastated but hell i surely did called him out i surely got police involved. You can absolutely separate good experiences with the pains of others it just takes a shitton of emotional maturity which most people don't have in this specific realm of events. X.x
This is correct, an ex childhood best friend of mine (we knew each other when I was one and he was only a few months older than me) has fallen into crime in the ripe old age of 16. He has done so much shit, but the worst thing he's done is break into a house with a gang of friends, and then stab the homeowner with a machete. The homeowner didn't die nor have any permanent injuries apart from scarring to my knowledge, but it feels so ghostly to remember the worst 'crimes' he used to commit was trying to pressure me into saying what he was going to get for his birthday. It feels so strange that he was once so funny and close to me, but know I avoid him like the plague. I understand being in denial that a frined may have done something like that, but defending your friend (aimed at ashton and mila, not you) when there is cold hard solid proof of them committing the crime is unforgivable imo
I had no idea who Charlie was a few months ago, one of his videos came across my RU-vid feed and I decided to watch. My first impression was I liked him and thought he has a refreshingly honest point of view. That turned into respect quickly. Charlie makes the world a better place, even for a 50ish woman who never played a video game in her life.
What I like about Charlie is that he doesn’t _usually_ have the same tribalistic mindset that exists almost everywhere now. He understands that you can both agree/disagree with certain aspects of a problem, issue, situation, etc. while also having the intellect to know that not everything that happens is somehow related to politics.
@@TitaniumTurbine Some people say Charlie is "bland" and has "normie" opinions. If having good common sense and being impartial is normie behavior in today's climate then shit, I wish everyone was a normie.
I mean maybe but at the same time sometimes the apology isn't about how good it will make you look its just you renouncing your previous views and saying that I was wrong and I don't want to advocate for this in the world. If no one ever apologized for anything fucked up they did in any kind of public way I think that would send a super fucked up messaged. I'd definitely rather be in a world where people put out sucky insincere apologies that at least convey the idea X behavior ISNT okay.
i don't think it's the fact that they're apologizing but the fact that their "apologies" are usually made to downplay what they did instead of owning up to it
@@Zack-vi7isyeah but it doesn't matter how sincere it is, people will always call it insincere or a bad apology. There's almost never been a time when people took an apology seriously. If I was famous I'd never apologize, because I know no one would care and would rip me apart anyways.
As someone who was good friends with and defended someone accused of SA before finding out that they actually DID commit the crimes they were accused of, this is NOT how you apologize or take ownership of that shit. If they're not out the gate with "We fucked up, we wrote those letters before we knew all the facts and we fully, whole-heartedly rescind everything we said in them," then they knew Danny was guilty the whole time and knowingly support a monster.
@@lenusniq_9746 Just because he was convicted doesn't prove he's guilty. He wouldn't be the first innocent man in jail. That trial was fishy af. Now I'm not saying he didn't do it - I don't know - but I do know that trial was all wrong.
but if the basketball community can get away with it all the time, and the police refuses to even take the evidence, then why should this guy get 30 years ?
They definitely should've hired someone to write this statement for them. The fact that Ashton emphasized that it was supposed to be for the judges eyes only shows that they knew this was a dirty move
Dirty move or not i dont agree with anything they said or did but one has to wonder why the statement and letter to the judge was made public in the first place. Since you have the right to disclose this freely with the Judge. So either someone paid a big sum to the Judge or it was accidently released.
@@MichaSennin in the US character references in a trial are public record unless the judge decides to seal them for a specific reason, but it’s rare for them to be sealed. The letters are also provided to the defendants legal team so they could’ve released them to influence public sentiment.
I just find it crazy that Ashton especially agreed to writing a letter to character for Masterson since he founded an organization to fight human trafficking and help victims, and all of a sudden that just goes out the window because your old buddy got caught??
It seemed very general and wrote with coaching from a lawyer. It likely was more for the family than it was for him. They could also believe that people can change and get help. 30 years is a life sentence.
@@peapopeathis should really be said more. Charlie's whole take on this is kind of bad. Their letters are only an issue if they knew what he was doing, otherwise all they can do is state what they thought of him. Saying they should have condemned him or that they should have refused is "guilty until proven innocent," which is not what we should want. The entire point of character references is that they are based on impressions of the person before being accused. They aren't being asked, "the accused hasn't been tried yet but what would you think of him if he was found guilty?"
It's also scary how Ashton said in his letter that he would trust the rapist to babysit his kids... Edit: I also just remembered how both Ashton and Mila were reinforcing the fact that dude was "anti-drugs", when part of the accusation is that he'd drug his victims to take advantage of them
Did you know there is literally zero proof that happened? There was no urine sample, no blood test, nothing. The prosecution literally had nothing to corroborate that claim. Just the words of those two women. That's called hear-say. And they waited 15 years...Come on, that's fishy af. I wouldn't be one bit surprised if he was framed.
Well remembering how Ashton left his girlfriend to naked and stabbed to death on the floor of her apartment back in 2001, this tracks for Ashton Kutcher's bad decisions (I'm referring to the Hollywood Ripper case). I'm happy Demi Moore managed to escape this bozo's clutches.
Yeah, the fact that Ashton says he trusts Danny alone with his kids is extremely terrifying and concerning. I’m not sure how that statement alone doesn’t have Child Protective Services knocking on his door.
Right?! That is why it bothers me so much when people defend Ashton and Mila for writing those letters claiming they were just doing it to defend their friend and that they had no idea he was evil blah blah. If they REALLY believed he was innocent and wrongly convicted, and were totally oblivious to his dark side, then they wouldn’t have been so concerned over the fact that the public saw the letters. The fact that they admitted they thought the letters would be confidential shows that they’re well aware that what Danny did was wrong, as is their support of him. Otherwise, the confidentiality (or lack thereof) of the letters would not have even been a concern of theirs at all. So yeah, I agree; they aren’t sorry they wrote the letters. They’re sorry the public has now seen their true colors, finally.
I was called on to testify at my college on behalf of my roommate who was a rapist, literally to tell them i didn't SEE him doing any shady shit with women. Which I hadn't. But all I said was "Yeah, I didn't see anything, I don't know what happened when I was out of the room, but no I didn't personally see anything weird," and I still felt dirty for YEARS after that. The idea of going in and being like "Yeah this dude was the best roommate ever he'd never rape anyone he has a smile on his lips and a song in his heart and gives presents to all the good little boys and girls and helps little old ladies cross the street" is fucking insane
A really good (former) friend of mine in high school sexually harassed the girls in our friend group (d**kpics and whatnot), but for some reason it took a while for them to say anything. I just overheard them speaking about it, and when I found out, I encouraged everyone to take action. We found out that he had done it before in his previous school, and I just couldn’t believe how we got along so well before. It outright disgusted me even more than before. Because most of us were minors, including him, we couldn’t do anything more than report him to the school authorities. We presented what we had, and we even contacted the girl he had harassed years ago to testify. His parents just put the very shitty excuse that he was “on meds”, and we all knew it wasn’t true. But it was our word (minors) vs theirs, so the school did absolutely fucking nothing about it. We then passed to the next grade (including him), to different groups. He even made new friends like nothing was wrong. 6 years later I’m still holding a huge grudge against him. I still feel really frustrated that nothing was done about it. We all just could stand there, in frustration that nothing was ever done. There was nothing else we could do. I fucking hate it.
for the first minute and a half I was sympathetic, writing a character reference for a former friend on trial for rape must be a hard thing to get right. Then I saw that these letters were written AFTER conviction, and were asking for leniency. Absolutely insane.

Yea but you weren't a multi-millionaire who gets special treatment from people all the time. Its like asking a plantation owner's brother if he thinks his brother's slave are being well treated.. Kinda defeats the purpose of looking for an unbiased opinion. In your case as a normal everyday joe there is no problem with doing a character letter about someone you know. But these celebrities man.. they got their wires crossed because everybody is an ass-kisser to them. Its like the movie the Interview when James Franco realizes everything in NK is a façade to make HIM think everything is going great.
Thanks for sharing the story, really harsh. My ex wife was very very verbally and physically abusive and one day I had enough and defending myself by holding her back from kicking me in the nuts. She then went on Twitter and told everyone we both knew (including my family) that I beat her. To this day some of my old friends still think I am a wife beater, only a few people that really knew me came forward and defended me. Long story short you did the right thing, even if you were wrong. More times people lie then tell the truth on these situations, glad you tried to fight for what you thought was true even though it wasn’t. The guilt would have been much worse if your friend was innocent and you did nothing.

@@Ram-zc4fi if you need sex Ed class to tell you that you need consent before having sex with someone then you have issues and are pretty disgusting. You don’t “accidentally” r@pe or assault someone. You’re not a “good guy” who made a mistake, you intentionally assaulted someone.
@@Ram-zc4fi Imo sex ed is kind of unnuanced when it comes to consent and the real world. E.g. some women really don't want men to explicitly ask for consent and like men to 'lead' and 'take charge' (though it's probably a good idea to ask) and that can be confusing for men. It's also kind of bizarre to accept that adults are incapable of communicating that they don't want to do something sexual in the context of being physically intimate w/ someone and that person trying to escalate things. At the end of the day the kind of 'knowledge' about consent in sex ed isn't factual, it's a prescription. And prescriptive 'knowledge' is a completely different category of knowledge than facts. And imo it's odd for a school class to be based around giving prescriptions (or strictly defining colloquial terms), outside of maybe a philosophy class. (and even there prescriptions are presented as the ideas of certain people, the university usually isn't explicitly endorsing a specific prescription)
Well it’s part of a defendant’s fundamental right to a trial. The defendant has a right to provide any exculpatory evidence, and even in sentencing the defendant has a right to provide any mitigating evidence or anything else that would possibly help their case. It seems pretty gross in this case and similar ones, true, but to suggest that such statements shouldn’t exist is very dangerous for a fair judicial system.
@@sub-harmonikI don't think it’s so bizarre. Consent is not always verbal, but people’s wants can easily change. It’d be just easier to ask verbally. And you're right, people should be given better education on the workings of what consent is, and how to recognise and confirm it. It’s pretty easy not to rape people, it’s one of the only crimes which have no logical reason other than causing physical harm to another being for one’s own benefit.
Drew Gooden made a skit a while back where a character walks in on his friend strangling a person to death and refuses to believe his friend could strangle someone because hes never been strangled by him. I feel like it applies here a bit.
That's called being human. We're horribly flawed, self-contradicting beings who too often choose to believe what we want, rather than what actually is.

Usually Character letters are before the trial, so there is a very likely chance they wrote these before he was convicted and thought better of him. Stil completely understand the outrage though.
This is why I hate Charlie. Charlie twists everything, saying that they did this to give him a lighter sentence which is not true at all, they did it because they originally thought he was innocent and was written 2 months prior to the conviction. Which is understandable because in this day and age false accusations are made a lot. Ashton literally works to free child slaves from prostitution rings, why would he support any rapist?! But of course Charlie just says whatever he thinks is true and right and because he has such a large active audience everyone takes it as face value for the truth. Important context: The letters were written in late July of 2023, and the guilty verdict was given in May. They absolutely had heard the testimony and evidence from the trial at that point, in fact there had been a previous mistrial in november 2022. Kutcher has done some incredible work advocating for sex-traffic victims, it's incredibly saddening to see him act this way in regard to victims of sexual assault. It should not matter that he had a personal connection to the assailant, in fact that should be more reason to not involve himself at all.
Look into the statistics of his organization. They overinflate the number of people they’ve helped by thousands. Sure, they do some good work but they’re also super shady about how they report stuff.

About 15 years ago my mother had a knock on the door from one of my school friends mother, she asked my mother if she would be willing to give a character reference for her two eldest sons (who were in their late 20s at the time). My mother agreed and wrote out the statement shining a positive light on the them before asking what the crime was (she thought it was brawling or some kind of driving offence). After doing some digging she found out that they had recently been convicted of multiple sexual offences including multiple rapes of underage girls, forced abortion, gang rape, threats to kill, forcing their victims to take heroin, child trafficking, facilitating child prostitution... My mother instantly withdrew her statement and was really shaken up by the whole thing. The men and their 4 accomplices all received life sentences and my old school friends mother still holds it against my family until this day, instead of being angry with her child rapist sons she is angry with my family for refusing to speak highly of her wicked sons.

Realistically, they don't have to believe it. They should be more empathetic, even just to save their career but no one can force them to believe it, we can just hope they see evidence at the trial
The first lesson they should teach in celebrity publicist school is "if you have the chance to make a public statement on anything, just don't. Nobody needs to hear your opinion. Trust me."
Some people have a really hard time denouncing someone they used to look up to if something happens that they didn't expect. That's the only way I can possibly explain this stupidity.
Why are character letters even a thing? A person shouldn't get a lighter sentence because he/she was nice to some people when they've committed horrible actions towards others. Bad people aren't bad towards everyone. A domestic abuser can abuse their partner and treat others with the outmost respect, that doesn't make them a better person.
they're a thing because most adults appreciate that there is more nuance to people than them being innately good or bad. judging people entirely by their worst actions is a naive point of view, and I would question anyone who actually believes that without a modicum of self-reflection.

It doesn’t matter if a rapist was nice to you, they still raped someone else.
And how they just "generalized" victims. The apology should have been directly to DANNY'S victims - those were the victims traumatized by their disgusting letters.
“We have “historically” been “researching” (AKA WATCHING) CP to protect victims” -the woman married to a man who met her at 14, yeah not sketchy at all. 😊
I don’t care how much good you’ve done, if you fuck up this monumentally and support the very thing you swore to destroy (it’s still rape, doesn’t matter if the victims weren’t kids) then you are gonna be held accountable. That’s the way it works, and these rich scum think they’re above everyone else and should get away with shit that poor people can’t. I hope more and more people start realizing how shitty most of the 1% are and stop idolizing them. Everyone is capable of evil regardless of class, but the rich public figures are capable of so much worse due to their perceived power and influence. They need a reality check. Every motherfuckin one of them.
@@brockfuller2074I believe to be actually something along the line of thought that "if they are friends with a bad person it would mean that they are also bad people"
That's not what happened though. Character references are needed for trials to be fair because juries have a habit of assuming the defendant is guilty before being presented any evidence when it's supposed to be the opposite. Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis could only go off of what they personally experienced.
While it was important for them to apologize for supporting a deplorable person, it is common for judges to request letters from people before sentencing. This is done so judges can evaluate someone via a list of factors to determine punishment/time. Source: I was an intern for a federal judge -I’ve seen them read comments from letters when discussing sentencing, and I’m a 3L.
legal procedure shouldn’t cloud the morals of those involved. just because people had the option to support a rapist doesn’t mean they should have supported them
Also are we forgetting "innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt"? When they were asked for character letters he was still "innocent" in the eyes of the law because his crimes had not been proven in a court of law yet. So writing a character statement for your friend who is being accused of being a rapist before ANY of the evidence has come to light doesn't seem nearly as scummy as Charlie is making it out to be. If they had stuck with those charcter statements after the trial however...
Anybody with google can find what you just wrote 🤣 at the end of the day, it’s close people willing to vouch for the accused. I’m sure you understand with case law, things are highly scrutinized usually public information. These celebs knew their names would be attached to this, this is literally nothing new
I'm gonna play devil's advocate here. What if these two heard their friend was convicted. So they then write letters of his character. And then they find Danny guilty. Is this not how it happened?
Hey Charlie, don’t know if you will see this but there is a dire situation happening to many channels right now including me, revolving around the recent news of edp. Recently many of us in the commentary scene covered the situation with edp and Jidion that you recently covered, however we have been getting hit with community guideline strikes for it. All being under the harassment category for showing the confrontation clip of Jidion and edp. This has resulted in dozens of large creators getting false strikes and we really need some bigger coverage on how RU-vid is defending edp and predators.
Not so fun fact, over 40 celebrities including Wes Anderson, Harrison Ford, Natalie Portman, and more signed a letter calling for the release of Roman Polanski after he was arrested in Zurich. Remember he’s still free today and just released a movie to a 3 minute standing ovation.
At least he cannot step on US soil. Polanski is also the reason why Adele Haenel quit acting at the height of her career. She was fed up with predators who dominate European cinema as well.
i read the whole thing and my jaw was just dropped 😭, they basically said “yea he’s raped people but he was nice to me”. like this is an exact quote : “while I'm aware that the judgement has been cast as guilty on two counts of rape by force and the victims have a great desire for justice. I hope that my testament to his character is taken into consideration in sentencing.” like nobody cares about how nice you thought he was he still did what he did and deserves to serve the full time
@@FrenkieWest32 personally, as Charlie said, if my lifelong friend is convicted of rape, there is no way in hell I am defending them. Unless I have substantial evidential proof that they are innocent.
