I loved watching this. Years ago I had a friend whose mother unknowingly bought a horse really cheap. It was cheap because it was so mean no one wanted him. This girl loved that horse so much and she was so patient. For a long time she could not even get near him. He tried to bite or kick everyone. Fast forward about a year. He still laid his ears back when anyone walked by his stall. BUT he would nicker like mad when he heard her calling him when she arrived at the stables. She would hug and kiss him and he pretended he hated it, but he looked like a abandoned kid when she walked away. She read books and asked horse trainers for tips and they helped her, for free. She trained him to be the best riding horse I ever saw. She could ride him with no bridle at all. It was all leg pressure. It was a real love story. Horses can learn when they are treated with patience and kindness. And in this case, lots of love. She even got a goat to share the stall with her horse so he would not be lonely. The darn horse LOVED that goat. The goat followed along sometimes when we rode near by! Thank heavens for firm but kind trainers.

@@bluesakura2092 Yes, it is a beautiful story I will never forget. The girl was 15 years old and neither she or her mother knew anything about horses. But the girl was so sweet and kind that she was content to just love the horse for months and months. Her mother wanted to sell it once she realized her mistake but the girl would not let her. The girl had the attitude “I am going to LOVE you, whether you like it or not!” Eventually, EVERYONE with eyes could see that he DID like it. And the rest is history. She won every single Trail Horse competition they ever entered. And he became such a beautiful horse! People were ALWAYS trying to buy him. She grew up and got married and that horse, named Diablo, went with her. Her new husband knew it was a package deal. He owned horses also so Diablo now had other horses as life time friends. Needless to say, he got along great with the other horses. He was so gentle that kids could ride him. He always seemed extra careful to me when he knew he had a little one on his back for a walk around the corral. It was a true rags to riches love story for that horse. And actually for the girl. Her father had died and they had to move. They bought the horse hoping it would give the girl something to focus on during a very rough patch in her life. I guess the horse and girl saved each other…….
I’m counselling an adult client dealing with historical trauma. I sent this link to them because developing a sense of safety in an unsafe world is the same for humans and animals. What you did with Pearl was so relevant. You also made it seem so easy but I know there was a lot more going on between you and Pearl than you could talk about in just 1.5 hrs. My client loved it and I watched much of it in tears. What a guy!
It's true that there's no difference between a frightened horse (or other creature), who needs time and trust and a lessening of hypervigilance and fear, and a person with ptsd. Speaking as someone whose been around horses, but also has suffered badly with ptsd. In both cases the body holds the score, and it takes time and patience to reset.
What a stunning good-hearted horse. Those bright soft eyes!! Even losing condition she is still shiny. Almost from the beginning you could see she wanted to engage but was just so worried. Thank you for "a treat every time you catch her" and for not hard-tying her. Tie rings are such a godsend. First of your videos I've seen. Really looking forward to more. I think they say, the oldest horse was 62 when he died, and there are som in modern time that go to 51 or 56 years old. ..most of them pony's though. But I think around 30-32 years on a big horse is old but not unusual.

Hard to follow due to the heavy accent. Also, the sound, should be higher, as the trainer. Speaks from his throat and chest, and it's hard to understand him. The woman's voice was perfect, accent and all we could understand her. Wish she did the narrating.
This video is brilliant and Steve is brilliant with Pearl. The transformation in her behaviour and in the frightened, stressed look in her eyes to her trusting Steve is so beautiful, heartwarming and amazing to witness. He is so gifted at helping to heal abused or troubled horses and there's something very special about Pearl, apart from her obvious beauty. She’s definitely been taught to lead and been handled before. There’s something in her past that has happened to her that has traumatized her and made her wary of people. Amazing how you overcame her fear and helped her see that not everyone will hurt her.
Yes, that is my feeling about her, too. She was halter broke. It is possible she was hard to catch. So they left a halter on her and she got it hung up on something. It only takes one traumatic event and people being afraid of her to make it a chronic issue.
I felt the same way. Having been a brood mare, she had to have been handled to some extent, but the way she shyed at her muzzle being touched, I thought perhaps she had been twitched, and badly. Bless her, I hope her remainig days are peaceful and full of treats.
...I have no doubt that at some time in her life she was mentally and or physically abused.....just like with us humans, it takes a LONG TIME to regain that trust....GOD BLESS
We had a horse who had been abused before she came to our farm. I stayed/lived in the barn with her for 2 months staying close by and talking to her. It took her a long time to get comfortable just with me but after two months of gently talking to her and coaxing her with grains and carrots she started to greet me when I came back into the barn by neighing softly. I worked 4 months just to get a bridle on her and another 6 months just to get a blanket on her back. Finally one day when I went out to the barn for the first time she pressed her body against the doors to greet me excitedly and she ate directly out of my hands that morning without the slightest hesitation. Acadia was *my horse* she would not let dad near her for almost a year and even after she was always skittish around men... if I could get my hands on the man who abused her. Time and Patience... that is all I can tell you. Oh and carrots...
she wants to trust, but she doesn’t want to be bred again. eventually, these mares connect that another foal could kill them. i can tell by her barrel that she’s been bred without much in between time off.
What I saw were 2 wounded beings brought to their point of communication by a man who understood them both. Very well done Steve. And Rhianna. And Pearl. God bless you all.
Steve is such a skilled horseman . I would absolutely call him a horse whisperer. I have been following him for awhile and I'm amazed at his talent. The horses trust him. One thing I've noticed is how the horses seem to like working with you. I think it's something about your confidence and masterful approach. I think they sense that you mean well and are there to help them. I don't know about horses but they seem incredibly sensitive and fearful. You do a great job!

I am not a horse person and have only rode a few times in my life all with other people on the horse with me. I am an animal lover and that is why I am watching this. I am empathetic to not being able to do what you love anymore and I am so very sorry your unable to ride because of fibro. My mother had fibro and I hated it for her. I pray you find relief.
I am so sorry doctors are now afraid to properly treat pain. I am allergic to Advil and for 20 years did well, properly taking Fentanyl. Now I've had a change of provider who wants to wean my off for no valid reason I can find. I have held a very responsible executive job all these years and no one knew I was on this medication. It can be taken safely, it just those looking to block reality and take too much or die from taking some home brewed poison, ruin life for us.

I have never sat down and watched a 2 hour RU-vid video but this was well worth the watch. I got a very similar pony in April only he was quite a bit more defensive, kicked, reared etc. I've managed to get him to the point of touching my knuckle in exchange for a slice of carrot, his water bucket or for me to just leave him alone. Still can't touch him. This video was truly inspiring, it's reinforced that I have been doing a lot right but it's also shown me how I can improve my technique. I wish you were in Ireland!
Ah I'm in the same situation, horse is also as defensive as you described. Currently she walks up to me and the other caretaker (who hasn't worked with her!) In the field, and I can pet her, brush her, lift her feet, put medication on wounds. It doesn't go as easily as with 'normal'horses because the 'touch my hand to give me permission' has become a thing for all touches, but she is calm, safe and happy. She even calmly followed me into a trailer! A year ago this was done with 7 people and she broke the entire thing. So...keep courage! You'll get there with your pony!
What about ethology ? We hear very good things about it for reinforce the link between rider and horse. A lot of ground work is required to know how to do better and to develop confidence. This is only a small suggestion, I read about it on a French site, a debate between riders. They were divided. The one who tried it seriously loved this. It 's teached in some schools in my country now. 🤔 Good luck, happy things between you and your pony in the future. I 'm certain you love him a lot, all hopes exist. 😁🥀🌻🥀
Just wanted to take a moment to say Rhiannon is a beautiful lady with a beautiful heart! She refuses to let her light burn out and it obviously burns brighter when she's doing what she loves, which is caring for the horses! And that mare is so lucky to have come across her path! Thank you Rhiannon for not giving up on life or on this mare! I see it paying off in more ways than you'll know! I suffer from depression myself and I know how hard it can be. Even the smallest, kindest most beautiful moments are worth exploring this world!

Incredible! I learned so much to use with my mare that is 13 and acts very dominant. As for the owner, I admire her strength and commitment to these beautiful animals! I am 60 years old and have suffered with mental illness my entire life. I understand the struggle it is to just survive some days. Thanks for showing this. I was taught this way when I was nine years old and a great old man who had learned about horses when he was a kid in a racing stable in the American South passed it on to me. I was able to spend most of my lifetime with horses and passed it on as much as I could to other children and adults. I hope this video helps many horses and people to understand each other better. There are so many good relationships between horses and people to grow in this world - good for the horses and good for the people.
Look at the calm way Steve went about setting up adding additional behaviors to lead the horse further towards healing fear. Masterful talent. He kept building up getting the horse used to him, a rope, a halter, the lead, hand strokes, a brush. Teaching he was in charge and posed no harm to her. He was gentle and firm. Boy, does he know horses and their tricks. Part of his approach included talking calmly to the lady who worked with him, to watch the horse watching him, so wary. He knew how to advance behaviors that developed mutual trust between them. The trust was passed on to the owner. Kudos. Fantastic video.
I absolutely love watching your videos. The very very few times I get to work with the horse at the stable where I’m employed, I use your techniques and try to get the other employees to do them too. My own horse is 23 now and he doesn’t have any really bad problems but each spring we do your moving feet exercise for a couple weeks to get him settled in for riding. Thank you!

The rescue I volunteer for gets horses from kill pens who have had painful experiences with humans, or we get them from neglect and abuse cases. We do not force pets/touch, at least not for quite a long time. We teach them they don't need to fear us and then they end up allowing us to touch them, even begin requesting pets from their favorite volunteers. Curious to see a different approach and how that has worked for this horse. Thank you for helping her! P.S. one of our most fearful horses from the kill pen, who came with her very young foal, was adopted this past summer and can even be ridden after working with our wonderful trainer.

Since I've discovered your channel, I have been binge watching your videos. So, this may be an older one, that I am commenting on. This story is so touching in so many ways. Almost all of your videos bring me to tears, but this one did, for so many different and obvious reasons. I'm sure you have answered Rhianna's prayers in that Pearl will be able to trust her enough to show her all the love and affection she needs for the rest of her years. And I have to say....Pearl is such a BEAUTIFUL horse! @28:20 you can really feel she wants to trust. As her owner can attest, it's a very difficult thing to do. I'm not surprised she had a hard time with Pearl. Quite, calm, dominant energy is what Pearl needs. I have a lot of the same issues and know it's hard to quiet those energies while pain levels are high or fatigued. I'm not saying anything negative towards her owner at all. In fact, she did the absolute best thing for Pearl by asking for help. That's true love. Pearl deserves to live a carefree life from here on out. Amazing job guys.
Hey Steve, hello from the states. I'm not a Horseman in the least, only rode a horse twice in my life. I watched this video from beginning to end and it only seemed 15 minutes long. Absolutely Brilliant! You have been blessed with a truly wonderful gift and thanks so much for sharing! Please take on an apprentice or two, you must share your knowledge as your predecessors did with you. I would go so far as saying you should open a school of Horsemanship, plenty of rich folk who would donate and if not you could just overcharge them, lol. They are used to paying for privilege. Thank you so much for the video and please thank, I hope I don't butcher her name being a yank and all, but thank Reanon. Reanon you are truly and angel sent from heaven to care for horses. God has a plan for everybody and you definitely found yours. Just use a head mounted GoPro so you don't have to be seen, only heard! People would love it seeing a caring person caring for neglected animals. Same here. I came across this video somehow and watched from beginning to end. I'm from England and recognised his accent. In fact we're probably from the same city. I love horses, there's just something really special about them. The health story of Rhiannon too. I can relate. Agree it would be a great idea to do a RU-vid about the care of the horses without being seen.
She WANTS to be loved, cared for, and have a relationship with this man. And that's what life is suppose to be about. If people just realized that God created animals for this very purpose. Bless these people who work with animals who have lost trust in people.
The horse is petrified of arms and hands, which is very telling from some past abuse. Also, she doesn't like her legs touched, also very telling. What a beautiful mare that it seems was used and abused from some previous years. Thank you for the kindness you showed her, and that she CAN trust the right human again.
Thank you so much Steve... I use to rescue dogs from shelters. I now have five seniors who had personality disorders. Some dogs in shelters are terrified and they were killed because they were deemed dangerous by the shelter. They growled and snapped. They were just scared. Once out of the shelter and in caring loving hands they no longer growled or snaped. And became incrediable loyal, loving companions who also seemed grateful for their life being spared.

26:00 I am deeply touched by Rhiannon's story. I've lived with Rheumatoid Arthritis since I was 18 and Fibromyalgia since I was 40. At age 40 I was forced to retire from my 22-year career in aviation. Once my symptoms started to be managed with the care of a wonderful physician from South Africa, I was able to look outside my immediate health care for something to occupy my time. I've been working with feral cats for the past 20 years. Something that a lot of people don't know is that feral cat communities are more akin to dog packs than house cats. They are very different from your average cat. I've spayed/neutered and homed over 45 feral cats since then. As I get older and my physical limitations become more advanced, I have settled into a more sedate existence with our two former-feral housecats and our six barn cats. I've also struggled with depression over the years, mostly un-diagnosed. That has been a steep learning/acceptance curve. I fully understand how the animals we choose to help become the reason we get out of bed in the morning. In 2017 we were dealt a heavy blow when our 26-year-old daughter died from complications of autoimmune disease. It has been a huge setback for my mental health. Slowly I'm working through it.

As people have already said, I feel for you in your loss. I too have lost a beautiful daughter almost five years ago. I was lucky enough to have had her until she was forty one. We went together for her to have a very minor procedure at the hospital, she was dead within an hour and a half. This obviously exacerbated my conditions of ME and Fibromyalgia and the only thing that kept me on this planet was caring for my little dog, who had severe liver complaint. He passed away in December. I have no other family, so life has been a struggle. Two weeks ago, I was able to adopt a three month old little chihuahua girl, Willow, and she is putting the sparkle back into my life. I am not doing such good things as Steve, Rhiannon and yourself
I hope to God that the next generation gets some true help for fibromyalgia. I'm 75, and have suffered from it since age 17. Wasn't diagnosed until I was 45 or so. From fellow sufferers, I got info, and a Nurse practitioner helped me.. it's taken almost complete control and I'm torn between thanking God I don't have cancer or worse,and daily frustrations or tears over the pain. I'd like to know how many people suffer in silence, world wide.

It's such a beautiful moment to see her not want the touch, but then when your hands leave her, her eyes want that feeling of contact back. You can see the war inside her head. "I want this, but I don't. It doesn't hurt, but I'm afraid." The want and need but the fear. Seeing her education being challenged as she slowly starts to feel there is no harm coming to her. What wonderful, powerful, and terrifying creatures horses are. A beast to be respected and admired in equal measure, for sure. Pearl Is quite the clever, beautiful girl. Wonderful work with her.
No fanfare, flashing lights, or bling. Just loving, practical training. That stable is dangerous on so many levels. I respect you for working around the low ceiling, slippery floors, and “leg breaker” gate. I hope the owner is able to get some assistance to improve the floor and gate. I lost a mare to a broken femur due to a floor like that.
Yeah looks like a typical "backyard rescue" that stretches well beyond their means and what's good for the animals by placing their own guilt and emotions above what's practical and feasible. Glad the horses make her "feel better". Her lack of awareness and ability to rationalize critically left this horse in emotional paralysis for almost a decade. Looking around the whole place looks overcrowded and run down.
@Cheryl Reuter You mistake judgment with observation. Past a certain point, it's no longer a rescue. It just turns into a hoarding situation. The animals are overcrowded and the facility is run down to the point of being extremely hazardous. Even the trainer commented that he hopes she can get some help improving the facility because it is dangerous. She is no longer "rescuing" these horses. Clearly demonstrated by the horse she "saved" almost ten years ago. The horse's condition has literally not changed or improved in almost ten years because she has no idea what she's doing. She's just "saving" and clutching on to these horses because it makes her feel better. Just because the horses are surviving doesn't mean they're thriving. They all look...so so. Her intent is good. The reality is though, the horses she did save don't even make a scratch in the DAILY slaughtered population and it would be more meaningful to save a responsible amount of horses and give them a truly good life, than too many and all of them are just surviving. It would be less stress for her as well.
I just discovered this video tonight. It's amazing what you were able to do to help the horse and her owner. Like Rhiannan, I sufferer from chronic fatigue, Fibromyalgia along with other illnesses...however, God made me allergic to horses and everything they eat and sleep in, so I have to worship them from afar. You're all doing great work on behalf of horses and now that I've discovered you, I will try to keep up with your excellent work. God Bless you all:)
Hey girl I have MS so to a degree I understand the pain you feel . Being around horses does have a healing effect about it . They use time with horses in programs to help heal vets with PTSD .

The Good Lord led me to the best Dr, so I feel somewhat alive again ☺️. I love watching horses. They are beautiful God given creatures. I'm sorry to say, I've never had any encounters with them. Although I love animals and always have thought that horses were absolutely beautiful animals I've never been around them much. So if someone would have told me I'd be watching an hour+ video of a guy walking a horse around a stall and getting to touch it, I'd probably not believed it. But this was amazing. The way you dealt with Pearl, and explained what and why you were doing things, was so gentle and loving. It's great that after so many years of fear, Pearls finally learning to see that all people aren't bad and going to hurt/scare her. And thank you to the couple who rescued her and all the other horses. Rhiannon glad you've found your touchstone with the rescue, enjoy your new relationship with Pearl.

I love how you seem to act by instinct around the horse and yet you are able to explain every little reactions on both your side and from the horse side. My father had breeding horses since before having children so i've always interacted with them but a lot of my interactions seem intuitive and i can't explain them the way you do (that's what Béring a professional means 😅) even if i probably seek the same kind of signals from the horse (like keep out of my space, relax, come toward me, go forward, look at me) it is very interresting to be able to put some words on this kind of interactions. I admire your calmness around this stresed out mare, your timing when you have to release the pressure, i'm learning a lot from your videos! Thank you!
The first 2 hour yt video I’ve ever watched and couldn’t tear my eyes away. What a wonderful service you provided that young lady. It’s hard to love something that doesn’t want it and now they can both love and trust each other until the end.
Hello Steve and Tanya I just found your channel two days ago and all I've done for two days is watch your channel! This horse and owner touched me in a personal way. I've lived a life like both of these individuals. I'm in the senior years of my life. I have decided to work hard to stay here and stay healthy, to trust those who deserve it and know the world isn't that bad. I cried while watching this story with the idea of hope in the future.
