Norfolk Southern teamed up with Osram Sylvania to commemorate the Horseshoe Curve's 150th Anniversary. A special train consist was created and outfitted with various lights to completely light up the Horseshoe Curve during the night of July 4, 2004. The dress rehearsal for this incredible event occurred the night before on July 3rd which this video covers.
The light train was approximately 2,800' in length and consisted of two NS 9-40CW on each end: NS 9822 facing west and NS 9828 facing east. There were 30 TTX well cars (six 5-unit sets) with a special commemorative box car in the center. The boxcar is now on display at the Railroaders Museum of Pennsylvania in Altoona.
The light train was outfitted with three different types of lights:
(1) - Osram search lights which were incredibly bright display lights in certain wells throughout the train.
(2) - Strobe lights were mounted along the side of the entire train, including the locomotives.
(3) - Well lights were mounted within the well cars to illuminate them for aerial photography.
NOTE - This video was recorded on analog equipment and is displayed for historic enjoyment.
