Got to remember for the longest during the founding and gathering of the gang Hosea was always Dutch's right hand in short though he was the more reasonable of our fathers, never fuck with Hosea
Dutch Hosea miss Grimshaw and Arthur basically. They're hold unquestionable authority. When you play domino with Tilly, Arthur told there's once a traitor in camp and Dutch kill him on spot. If only that could apply with Micah sonner the better.
@@sakinahsaraswati4428 Grimshaw only got away with it because Molly was saying that she ratted out the gang. If she was that respected by the gang, then I'm sure everyone would've turned on Micah when he killed her.
@@gold_5600 I feel like somewhat. That whole army think that Charles left for? I feel like Micah planned that. But others, like Kieran? No way. He wouldn't have let Kieran or Sadie join if he wanted them dead anyway. Maybe Sean. But Lenny was a surprise to everyone, anybody could have gone first across that rooftop. Maybe Hosea. Definitely Molly, thought I don't know if she would have sided with Arthur
Jack's life was at danger, the son of 2 of their gang members, they didn't know his whereabouts for a while, and he still kept up a good profile Honestly, Bill got lucky, Hosea is arguably the oldest gang member, both in terms of age and how long he's been with them, he has seen and fought fights bill could never pull off due to how long he's been in the camp
@@bluememe4652 I still think bill would have one the fight if where talking one on one fist fights but that would never happen in camp as soon a bill laid a hand on hosea everyone in camp would have killed him
I love how much Arthur respects Hosea. He always sticks up for him because Hosea basically raised him. So did Dutch but Arthur stopped respecting him as much in Chapter 5
Classic abusive parent/dependent child relationship. Hosea and Dutch used Arthur exactly like a pimp uses a prostitute, until he was plumb wore out. They ruined his life from an early age, and destroyed any chance he might have had for a normal happy existence. Just as in real life, very often the child still clings to the abuser out of misplaced loyalty, because they simply don't know anything else. The game is full of storylines like that.
@@dogslobbergardens6606 what that was Dutch who did that Hosea kept telling Arthur and John through the game to get out of there and live a normal life
@@dogslobbergardens6606 it's far from an abusive parent/dependent child relationship....ffs arthur barely had a chance in life, especially in those times. his father was a criminal who got arrested and executed, his mother died of illness. hosea and dutch taught arthur how to read, ride a horse, hunt, and shoot. they gave him love. that's more of a chance at life than he would've got as an orphaned street rat by himself.
@@Nevermore093 they made goddamn sure he could never have a normal life and put him in constant life-threatening danger. Manipulating him the entire way. Yep, that's love and good parenting all right LMAO. You're flat wrong; he'd have had a better chance scrounging for scraps in the street rather than being shot at all the damn time and led around by the nose by career con men. As an orphan street rat there's at least a slim chance someone with genuine morals might have looked after him and led him on a different path.
eh not really arthur was slightly starting to not respect him early as chapter one. i remember a couple times where he was very questionable early on because of the whole blackwater thing especially when nobody would really tell him about it. it was something about dutch killing a girl and arthur said that’s not like him and something soon after can’t remember
i like the little gun twirl Hosea does at 2:08 It shows that he's not just an old man who acts like a father to people in camp, he's a trained killer that wont dodge smoke from anyone.
One of the things I love about Hosea and Dutch is that they both have two pistols, but while Dutch wears his normally, Hosea wears his cavalry style which makes them easier to draw from a sitting position. It shows that he's always first to sit down and talk things through, but he's always ready in case diplomacy breaks down.
I theorize that Arthur carries his pistols in his manner as to draw subtle influences from Dutch and Hosea. One slung low and ready for a quickdraw, the other in a more difficult drawing position but positioned to show authority should the need arise
@@jamesflowers8054 that and because his satchel would be in the way of just having his two holster fixed on both his legs but they could've totally gone made Arthur have his like Hosea without the problem of his satchel getting in the way
Considering this game accurately models pulling the hammer on revolvers, I'd say it's a pretty fair assumption that Hosea was never intending to shoot Bill at any point, he just wanted to show him he was serious. I like that detail, shows that even at his angriest, Hosea is really just a nice guy who doesn't want people getting in his way.
I was going to say while that's true, he had his finger on the trigger, but Hosea rocked dual cattlemans, which were not double action so yeah he had absolutely no intentions of putting a hole in Bill's chest lol.
@Gustav Quicksand I don't think that's what they were getting at. It's an intimidation thing. Besides hosea is a Quickdraw in canon so he could easily end bill asap
chris Lol right? Micah walked around bragging about how much he does for the camp, I’m looking in the ledger and it says he only donated 25 bucks. Like, wooow. I’m regularly donating 200+ bucks and bringing a buck plus small game in all the time, but yeah I’m just so fucking lazy.
Rahul Sar Lol ikr? Like they’ll all live in squalor if you don’t bother to do anything about them, like I’m watching my dad do in his game lol (he occasionally upgrades ammo and food and medicine, but he won’t touch a single camp living upgrade lol.)
@@adamb1593 Adam B I can relate to Bill as a currently drunk person (it's my day off. I don't need any lectures) and say he likely wouldn't notice, nor would he undervalue Hosea's thumb-work, should Hosea decide to escalate it.
@@adamb1593 You say that as if Hosea couldn't pull it back and fire in half the time a drunken Bill could react... A gun being pointed at you is a gun being pointed at you, whether it's primed or not.
I can understand Bill's frustration. He actually does work fairly hard in Chapter 3, Arranging the Valentine Bank Heist, Assisting Dutch with the sheriff business, and trying to get work from the Grays. I think he's earned a little break. Maybe Hosea should yell at Javier instead, he barely does anything the whole game.
@@garythestormtrooper5589 I kinda liked Bill though. I felt a little bad for him at the start of rdr2 since he just wasn’t as smart as everyone else and was poked on a lot. Too bad he ended up following the wrong men at the downfall of the gang.
@@mango8127 I always felt it was a little more poetic to kill Reyes' enemy, and let Reyes kill John's. Especially since I think John would be much more inclined to kill Allende. Allende represents most of what John loathes and disrespects in a person, and Bill was just a naïve fool, who wanted to belong. And once he had lost the gang, he just went crazy with not having anyone that cared about him. So he lashed back out at the world in the worst of ways.
@@Bonke_EB I feel the opposite. Although John hates the kind of person Allende represents, he doesn’t actually give a shit about him. Bill on the other hand went from a naive fool to a murdering, bloodthirsty rapist that needed to be put down like a rabid dog. John has more reason to kill Bill than Reyes does and Reyes has more reason to kill Allende than John does
What scares me more than Hosea screaming is how quick he was on that draw... and the way he spun it back into his holster. At the time of the story we see him as a wise, gentle man who provides sage advice to the group and reads a lot. We only hear stories of his exploits... but damn its something to see.
Felt really bad for Bill. I always felt that if he was given more encouragement and courtesy he might've been able to turn things around. He joked about how all his friends ended up signing back into the army after complaining the entire time about how they wanted to get out but it's clear that he was just as lost for direction in his life as they'd been which is why he was so attracted to the idea of joining up with Dutch. The dude needed some guidance counseling.
Bill got hella encouragement from Arthur and John. John in RDR1 said he respected Bill like an older brother. Bill is acting all lazy. Sure he is dependable and reliable, but he should just have some common sense and work. Even Micah puts in some work and trust me, he gets the same treatment as Bill regardless and worst.
The way he talked about how the army's 'stupid' makes me think he was jealous of his mates who got to go back in while he was discharged and directionless. Ripe pickings for Dutch, really.
goddamn, hosea's line "Ive excused you quite enough!" pulling the gun that quick, the gun twirl...Hosea's slick af. Shame we didnt get more moments with him
Not to mention Hosea found their campsite and later found a reliable fence for stolen goods. If Dutch and Micah hadn't fucked it up, they could have slowly earned enough money to move somewhere safer.
Not really. Hosea's just a miserable old failed con-man who never accomplished anything more than talking a bunch of idiots into getting themselves wanted dead or alive. It's weird how fanboys keep trying to make these characters into glamorous heroes. They're almost all lifelong losers who made terrible decisions every step of the way, and now lay about whining that the world doesn't want them around anymore. Well DUH lol.
@@dogslobbergardens6606 That is just your opinion and I disagree. The game is titled Red Dead REDEMPTION, not Red Dead LOSERS. Heard that right? Nuff said.
Red Dead 1: “I don’t want to play as Jack, I want to play as John!” Red Dead 2: “I don’t want to play as John, I want to play as Arthur!” Red Dead 3: “I don’t want to play as Arthur, I want to play as Hosea!”
I’d kill for RDR3 to star Hosea, living in the mountains, scamming folk & meeting Dutch just after the Civil war. Seeing John and Arthur as angry teenagers would be awesome
@@robtz759 yeah cuz bill robbed a small town while Dutch robbed a whole goddamn New York ofcourse bills is gonna work it's a no brained a toddler could plan out the valentine bank robbery 😂
You know Hosea is one of the most chill members of the gang but he puts his foot down precisely and quickly when he has to remind people who Dutches right hand man is
''Do what Hosea says!'' that was one of the funniest things i've seen in this game, Hosea telling Bill to just ravage the countryside and Arthur going ''God damnit you heard em!''
i love hosea so much he's so genuinely likeable. like the cool grandpa you do fun stuff with who can also be very stern and intimidating. always been one of my favorite fictional characters ever
There’s actually a nice dialogue where Bill apologizes to Hosea for being an ass, and Hosea says something along the lines of, “I know you are, but you’re a part of the gang.”
@@EndOfSmallSanctuary97 I think he and Dutch actually built and ran the gang together. When Hosea died, Dutch alone wasn't enough of a leader to carry the weight but due to his narcissism and intellectual vanity, he couldn't admit any weakness so he started to grow increasingly despotic, aggressive and paranoid instead. If you see both men interact with other members at camp, it's pretty clear Hosea is the grounded one who's all about family while Dutch is only full of himself and his self-righteous delusions.
@@EndOfSmallSanctuary97 They both ran it symbiotically. Dutch was the gang's face and crowd control while Hosea was the strategist. Both are needed to lead a group successfully.
@@jezd2223 wouldn't exactly say he's an asshole, since he can be pretty nice. It's just that he's kinda dull and extremely unlucky. Cause of that, he reacts like most kids in movies with dysfunctional families, he becomes a bully
Actually the holster position Hosea has is very good for quick drawing during sitting. It fits Hosea so well. Hosea isn't a fighter he's more of a diplomat sitting doing the talking. So this kind of holsterpositioning is perfect for when the talking goes sour and he has to act quick. This man is a professional in all aspects.
Rafael Pereira the gang should of been called the Matthew’s gang cause hosea is the better leader than Dutch everyone would be alive and no plan, Tahiti or money just west living away from civilization and Micah would of been dead
imagine an alternative universe where the gang splits and it’s hosea, arthur, sean, lenny, charles, and john vs dutch, micah, bill, javier, joe, and cleet
I think this dialogue highlights well the differences between Hosea and Dutch in their leadership styles. Hosea is about practicality; people need to work or else the gang will run out of food and money. Dutch is about aspiration; people need to work or else things won't change and dreams won't come true. Hosea appeals to rationality, which unfortunately isn't always the best motivation. Dutch appeals to the emotion, he wants you to feel like you're worth something and making a difference. And when put under pressure you see the difference in how they react; Hosea gets stressed out and Dutch loses his mind. Hosea obsesses over the reality while Dutch disassociates from it.
Also if Hosea doesn't like you and doesn't think of you as an asset worth keeping, he will shoot you dead in the middle of camp in front of everyone if he's pushed Dutch will wait until you're alone and vulnerable, likely on a dangerous job, stab you in the back or leave you for dead, and then lie to everyone about what happened Hosea doesn't care if people know he's a cold bastard. Dutch is paranoid and needs to keep up appearances to the point he ends up being a much more callous cruel bastard than Hosea.
Yeah, he and Dutch creating the band. And see the young Arthur and the young John joining the band. I wish the game ended after the Blackwater ferry's assault... When RDR2 started.
Kinda weird to think how different it would have been if Hosea lived. He would have shut down all of Micahs dumb ideas probably, would have been on Arthur's side and managed to convince Dutch if somehow Micah managed to slime his way through Hosea
Yeah. He would keep Dutch's head from going insane. He would expose Micah. He would evaluate Morgan,Marston,Lenny's (Other positive Members) Character and make the camp entrust them more. He was a Good Spirited and Wise old man.
I definitely think Dutch wouldn't have gone crazy if Hosea didn't die. Like as soon as Hosea died, Dutch just instantly changed. Hosea was one of my favorites.
Bruce Hartin I think it would’ve been better for Hosea to still be alive in the end, like let’s say Micah’s been in Dutch’s ear making Dutch do crazy shit just like in the game except while Dutch is ranting about traitors and Faith Hosea and Arthur have a heart to heart talk about Dutch losing his mind and how in reality Dutch ends up being the one betraying Hosea and Arthur cuz of Micah and in chapter 6 in the final show down Hosea calls out Dutch’s idiotic behavior and Arthur exposes Micah as the rat and Dutch breaks down mentally and it’s a giant standoff between the good hearted in the gang and the evil hearted gang members.
A cool detail is that Hosea's revolver is single action so it can only be fired if the hammers is down, but as you can see at 2:04 the hammer is still up, meaning that even if he pulled the trigger the gun wouldn't fire, so he took advantage of Bill being drunk to threaten him without the possibility of accidentally killing him.
I would love to believe that because it would add to Hoseas caring character but at the same time, Rockstar did a horrible job at detailing the guns in this sense. Plenty of cutscenes. Single actions work as Double Actions and it seems that they used a Double action for plenty of the Models such as when John got his Cattleman ready by pulling out the cylinder and swinging it back reloaded in Jim Milton Rides Again
This was a moment in the game where hosea to me was legitimately terrifying. Despite being older he still knows how to use a gun and will when he’s fed up or angry.
Micah may have been twisting Dutch’s mind from the beginning, but Hosea dying is really what doomed the gang. He was the reasonable one. Arthur tried talking to Dutch and reason with him after his death, but Arthur was always just the strongman that got things done so Dutch didn’t care for what he had to say. I wouldn’t say it’s the same situation, but I got the same feeling when I saw Hosea die as when I saw Hershel from the walking dead die. I was heartbroken they could do that to someone who cared for everyone so much.
“Well he ain’t doing much neither!” Yeah, Arthur doesn’t do much. Arthur goes on every single mission for the camp. whether it’s for food, money, or anything!
Right!? I donated about 300 Dollars once and a lot of meat. I take my time to explore a bit and as soon as I come back Dutch starts complaining on how I stopped providing for the gang. *Have some goddamn faith Dutch ffs*
Starset4life 2017 I’m sure that’s why they killed most those characters off. It’s ironic how every single character that died along the way more than likely would have been on Arthur and John’s side.
Hosea was essentially Arthur’s father. In his journal, he had said he loved Dutch almost like a father, but that he loved Hosea more. Lenny was a good kid and saw the brighter side of things, he most definitely would have joined Arthur’s side without question. Not to mention he wasn’t so fond of Micah either. Sean basically owes Arthur his life since he was the one that saved his life. Sure, Javier also helped, but the second Arthur mentioned that Micah was the rat? Sean automatically would have joined Arthur. Kieran wouldn’t have been on the same side Micah and Bill were on. Kieran did respect Arthur even with how he was treated by him, even if he wasn’t much of a fighter - he would have known which side to be on. Charles? Well, Charles undoubtedly would have been on Arthur’s side. Charles and Arthur had great chemistry with one another, plus, Arthur did help out Rains Fall’s tribe. Sadie was absent due to getting Abigail and Jack to safety, but I’m sure we all know she was with Arthur till the end. Miss Grimshaw chose to side with Arthur. That means Arthur’s side would have outnumbered Dutch and Micah if only the rest of the main characters made it to the very end.
“We’ll he ain’t doin’ much neither” Me, who has just chopped all the wood, fed all the horses, carried all the water, brought all the grain sacks, given the gang almost all my money and is single handedly feeding the entire camp *say that again*
For some reason some of the camp members will continuously ask you to change into warmer clothes. I'm on my ninth run on the game and i dont know how the hell it happened but the gang is always telling me to wear something warmer even when im wearing that coat
@@SuperNovaStudiosFSN The same thing is happening to me! The temperature reads 88°F and everyone in camp tells me to put warmer clothes on. It's getting really annoying. Must be a new glitch.
When I first saw this in game, I knew that there was a good reason why Hosea was Dutch's strategist. Hosea was the smartest and most level headed gang member next to Arthur.
I love how Hosea twirls his gun at 2:14. A small and rather unimportant detail you may think. But this is a great symbolic showing what a professional gunslinger Hosea is and why he survived that long. Just shows you dont need dialogue to explain a character, kinda like the Sergio Leone movies back than.
Thats like, something anyone could/would do. Its literally a single spin. Arthur does an ever fancier one, and hoooo boy, you should really check out metal gear solid sometime.
Spinning a gun doesn't make you a talented gunslinger lmao. Majority of flashy shootists relying on trick shots and gun twirling were the first to die in gunfights.
It makes me so sad to think about it. I can hear Kieran saying something like "you stuck by me so I'll stick by you." God damn man, Hosea, Lenny, Sean... They did not deserve to die like that
I personally think Arthur would've told Kieran to leave and go somewhere safe. I feel like, had Kieran been alive for the last chapter, the members would've acted hostile towards him and assumed he was the rat.
I love how they've written Hosea in this game. You'd expect the old man character to be stoic, wise, and a patient mentor to the main character and while Hosea is definitely those things, he's not above getting angry and making demands out of others.
RDR2 remains on my top of the top for best games of all time just for stuff like this, I show up and camp and feel like I’m actually in a camp of outlaws. Stories happening when I’m not there, the world keeps moving in the Redemption Universe.
Carlos Molina nah there wouldn’t be no sides at all cause Hosea is what keep the group together that’s partly why Dutch lost his shit and went crazy because of Hosea death
All of the characters who died in this game would've sided with Arthur and John. Josea, Lenny, Sean, Susan. Heck even Molly probably would've. Charles, Pearson, Mary Beth, Uncle, Karen and Swanson would've if they hadnt left.
As you can see here hosea is antagonizing bill which probably refers to the Easter egg of the aliens found on the mountains. And what other game had a mountain GTA so what hosea is saying is that GTA is in the same universe as red dead
I had this happen to me when I was in camp was just texting or doing something on my phone and I heard that line "I have excused you quite enough!" and turned to see Hosea with his gun out... I literally thought shit was about to go down lol
People really underestimate how much work it takes to implement these interactions seamlessly into a video game. This is the gold standard of a sandbox videogame.
