Nobody wants irresponsible gun owners, but understand that those of us who grew up with firearms have had more training by the time we turn 18, so requiring expensive training classes to learn what we've had memorized since we were 8, is absolutely unnecessary and punitive for those on a budget. Any new shooter could go to a range and simply tell the other shooters that this is their first time, they'd have offers from most there to show them gun safety and basic training. I know I'd love the opportunity to help a new shooter learn a fun and essential skill. Besides, requiring training to exercise a Right is an attempt to turn that Right into a privilege.

Yeah, learning the rules of general firearm safety, in combination with learning how to operate and maintain your specific firearm are probably the two most important aspects of gun use and ownership.
