And exploration of the death of Cooper Harris and the ultimate murder conviction of his father, Justin Ross Harris.
UPDATE 2: On 05/25/23, Prosecutors announced they would not be retrying the case. JRH will be free after he has served the time for his other convictions.
UPDATE: On 06/22/22 JRH's murder conviction was overturned by the The Georgia Supreme Court. The short version is [SPOILER ALERT] that the court found the evidence pertaining to his extramarital affairs was unfairly prejudicial. The likely outcome will be that Harris will receive a new trial without the philandering stuff being brought in.

They tend to put prisoners who are at greater risk for being attacked by other prisoners in separate areas. When I went to jail for fighting, I was placed in the lock down ward because I'm not straight. 🤷‍♀️ Ghats how I found out THAT was a thing. But, anyway, I was there for a weekend and one woman was there awaiting trial for killing her kids. We were only allowed out for 1 hour per day. They would neber allow her out of her cell while any of us were out. The rest of us were let out by floor. The whole 1st floor went pit, then back in. Then the 2nd floor got their hour. After everyone else, she alone was let out for her rec time. They did that because they KNEW nost of the other women wanted to get their hands on her.

And cheating isn't easy... so not all will get the chance to stray. Although I these times with a sex partner being a click away, I'm sure the percentage has gone up.

@Yellow lia But most open relationships are complete failures. From what I am gathering from my interations with men, who many of which throw around that humans are not wired to monogamy argument constantly (even though it's the most stable and secure type of relationship that can ever exist regardless of the circumstances), Nobody should try to be in a relationship or ever try to have a family because they are all fundamentally doomed to fail because men can't save themselves for their wives who have probably thrown away all their aspirations to be their wife and raise their children.

Finding your child is missing and having no idea what could have happened is torturous for any parent with a heart. Every second that passes is another moment for your mind to race in creating all the horrible scenarios that could have possibly occurred; every thought that passes means less and less hope that everything is fine and there's an explanation for why they aren't where they thought. Especially if the dog was still a puppy...and literally the *first* pet you ever had. It would maybe be slightly more understandable if he had many years of being a good father, established positive relationships with multiple children who had told him he was a good father as well, etc. Then, at the very least, his answer could be explained by him recalling past experiences of being a good father...plus the knowledge that his son would also confidently describe him as a good father, because he's had so many experiences that aren't erased, and are actually more real than the accident - which had yet to even sink in as something that truly happened. Plus, in my hypothetical, it's possible that being a good father had had a chance to become a solidified & core part of his identity. It's been said & thought so many times over such a long period that the answer rolls off the tongue before the brain had a chance to intervene (exasperated by the fact it's still in shock). IDK, that's the only hypothetical case I can think of where a somewhat decent excuse could be made that the answer was genuine.

My theory as to why Harris drove away from The Treehouse and to another location to “discover” Cooper: it’s harder to put on a big phony act in front of people you know. Everyone there saw him every day, and he’d have had a harder time being convincingly hysterical around his colleagues than strangers. That short drive to the mall increases my skepticism because there had to be an odor in the car. Not necessarily decomposition, but definitely a soiled diaper, sweat, and the sour panicky adrenaline scent of a child that struggled and died over a period of eight hours. There is no way he failed to notice both the smell AND the sight of Cooper’s corpse for even thirty seconds inside that vehicle.

@Privacy Lover I believe everything Ross did seeing his wife for the first time was to keep her on his side during the investigation. He lied to her about how peaceful Cooper looked when all accounts are to the contrary. He played on her sympathy about how awful the jail cell was and how awful his life would be in jail. All that was to keep her as a loving wife when it’s clear that he had no plans on staying with her. He had fallen for the 18 year old, the very pretty one at the trial that stated she had fallen in love with him but importantly who he had said he would divorce his wife for if not for Cooper. Ross never anticipated he would be put on trial for murder nor the depth of the investigation. He thought with his wife, family, church members, and friends backing him up on how great a dad he was, how much he loved Cooper, he would be quickly cleared. His needed to keep LeAnna loyally by his side and that whole incident in the interrogation room was him manipulating a mother in shock, totally numb from the loss of her son, with Ross being aware of her kind heart and her love for him.

That's true. I know this from a peculiar kind of experience. I used to participate in acting interest group, got some minor roles like 5 times on TV - a typical nobody with practically no experience. However, I was convinced I can act because people in the acting group usually told me I was good and such. Years later I went to university to study film theory however the entry course was film and drama. Having thought I can act I considered it a perfect trajectory. To my great surprise it turned out I can't act. It was a shocking experience that lasted three years. It was like three years of a bad audition for whatever talent factor show. (I did get the degree though - turns out my love for film helped me to understand the medium enough to engage it critically). So that's how I thought I was great while being absolutely terrible. The second perspective might sound a little controversial but I don't mean to express any kind of hate or whatever towards any minority. So, I had a gay stalker. I'm a straight guy and there was this much older guy who kept imposing himself on me. He would arrange situations, build "dramatic" moments, lead every conversation to exploration of homosexuality. Constant gaslighting in hope for some sexual development was basically a norm with this guy. I guess all this was because I used to be semi handsome before I got fat - or am I only thinking so? ;) Anyway, this is the perspective where I saw terrible acting of a person who thought was good. It was so pathetic that I kind of pity the guy no matter how much I hate him. So I kind of had it both ways and your comment resonated with me to the point where I got deep in some memories for a moment if you know what I mean.

Another detail that wasn't addressed is that he DIDN'T TAKE OUT THE BOY FROM THE SEAT. If you're a parent, even if there are obvious signs that your baby's not alive, a parent normally won't believe it, and fight for their child with absolutely everything they can. Above all else, setting your child free by removing them from the seat is such an elementary, automatic reaction (unless one causes their child's death), that it goes without saying you do it, subconsciously. During the Chris Watts interrogation, he claimed he didn't call 911 because his girls "were blue", beyond help. The detectives replied, even if your child is decapitated, you call 911 and try everything and anything to revive them. He didn't bother to remove his son from the seat. The detectives (and prosecutors) let that one slide.

Thank you for being a really wonderful alternative to JCS. I really appreciate the work you've put into this detailed analysis of this case. A couple of things, going through the video a second time: The way he cries and then relaxes, legs crossed, while still crying, indicates to me that he thinks he's actually giving a good performance. Also, with regards to his wife, she's trying to comfort him for what she thinks is a mistake. Viewed through the lens of absolute trust, she's perfectly within her right to say what she said. Is it possible that, at this point, she hasn't seen her child and the reality hasn't seeped in yet? If you have any knowledge to the time-frame it would be good to clarify.
@MattOrchardCrimeandSociety

Interesting that you picked up on his crossing his legs. I considered annotating that moment but decided it was a little too speculative. Personally I do agree it looks very odd though! Leanna Harris hadn't seen Cooper's body and she would have only learned of his demise within hours of being in that room. Absolutely she was in shock. There is no reason whatsoever that she would have been involved. Authorities were suspicious of her in the beginning, but got off of that once they started seriously looking in to her - no motive, no evidence.

This reaction, known to experts as ‘if you breathe, you’re a killer cognitive dissonant syndrome’ is a dead giveaway to the detective, who immediately ended the questioning and charged our assailant with 117 counts of unusually mean spirited and super-heinous murder in the first degree.” I still like his videos but really, what are his credentials?? That anything besides absolute shock, which if anything is the polar opposite of professional coolness, would rule her as a mother who just lost her only child due to her husband's carelessness is ludicrous. And being a nurse would also mean absolutely refraining from asking questions pertaining to another child, since that by definition is something that's done AFTER the acceptance and mourning of the one just lost. Personally I think it's the combination of having to straddle the line between accepting it as a complete accident and the undisputed personal responsibility of the man she loved that made her pose said question to him.

The video in the father’s search history sent a shiver down my spine. The guy talking about how a dog being left in a hot car would have a “slow and agonizing death”. The fact that the father saw that video before subjecting his own son to the exact thing seems damning in my eyes

That video was shocking to me. I have no kids and it's absolutely chilling to think about leaving a DOG in that situation. To see that and then do what he (very likely) did to a human child, also not aware of what is happening but much more able to understand the abandonment... truly monstrous

The reason this case always chills me; I read the same Longform article as Harris did, the one that breaks down how these things happen. We dont know for sure he read anything, BUT....the way he speaks, what he speaks about. I know that article, I've read it a few times because it's so interesting and explains how these things happen so well. One of the cases was a woman who had been a ranked military office. She did the Daycare Blip, she took her kid to the door, parked up, took a work call that an on for a while and that sort of...Highway Blindness kicked in, her brain switched into work mode and her brain checked the box that says 'we dropped the baby off' so she left. Her baby did not survive. I even know what cases I think he was trying to copy more specifically. I'm sure of it because of the lunchtime check. In one case of baby left in car, a father had done a similar sort of thing with the Blip in his routine that causes this deadly mistake. This dad actually realised and raced back to his car. I believe his child survived but suffered profound brain injuries and amongst other things, was left blind and permanently mentally and physically disabled. He'd been in the car a few hours, I think) I think thats what the lunchtime visit was. He may have intended to 'find' Cooper in that moment, but either Cooper was still alive, perhaps crying, so Harris left it til the end of the day. Or he was on his way to make the check, recalled this case and realised he couldn't risk 'Finding' Cooper in that moment, in case he was still alive. Because then not only did the plan fail and he still has a son, his son could now be a severely sick child who would need more full time care than ever before, perhaps for the rest of his life. Harris didn't want the kid when he was healthy, he wasn't going to accept a sick child. And the easiest, biggest argument against his innocence? The smell. First responders at the scene all reported a strong, STRONG smell of death. Enough that no one believes Harris rode in that car any distance and didn't notice the stink. His claim he 'saw' Cooper, rather than smell the corpse is totally implausible. Even if Cooper was alive at lunchtime there would have been a fairly intense smell. A toddler, in diapers, stuck in a HOT car for by that stage, a few hours? He'd have voided his bladder and bowels and probably been sick multiple times. Even by then there would have been a ripe whiff (which could be why the visit to the car is so brief, Harris opened the door, got a nose full of that and perhaps knew he'd not be able to compose his emotions for his performance). As to why he did drive some distance in that stink; I dont think he trusted his own performance enough to do in front of co workers. Its one thing to fool your life long partner who you've been lying to for YEARS. I think he wanted strangers around when he reacted. I think he thought he'd have more control over how he came across.

Couple of years ago, I'd be late 30s, my younger brother left me in a hot car! It was a rental, it had automatic locks, I was completely unfamiliar with the car, we were in Spain, late summer, under the sun - middle of the city, he "brb"'d had to go get some stuff, and left me there. First few moments, I was just bored - and a bit annoyed that the doors had auto-locked as soon as he closed them, and I didn't wanna make a fuss, neither did I feel like frantically looking for some unlock feature around the controls. From there on, the heat rose quickly! I got a very rational worry - that the air and temperature was becoming untenable, but I kept from panicking knowing - again, rationally - that my brother would be right back. After maybe 3-4 minutes at the most, he came back, and I wasn't even at a point where I'd sweat, it was more of just a deep, dry heat - I realized just how fast heat builds in a locked car, and just how quickly it becomes too hot to be comfortable, to hot to breathe properly - it was SO fast!
@nomorepikachu
@nomorepikachu 9 месяцев назад
It goes extremely fast. After 30 minutes the temperatures can easily rise to 42°C, after an hour to 46°C (aprox. 115°F). Of course depending on the day, time and place. Good thing you didn’t stay there alone for long.
